I would usually go to this place on Friday for the Isaacs and Maria duo. Apparently, Maria doesn't work there anymore or for some reason works on other days. How the best employee doesn't work on the busiest nights of the week is mind boggling. I come all the way from Greece to see her. Will not be going there anymore with my friends. Luckily I was able to get a hold of this awesome person through facebook (thank you Mark Zukerberg) and found she is at a different location on the weekend. She wont be making us smile with her singing but she will be making us awesome drinks and giving us the pleasure of her company. Which is more than enough. The service at the Duplex the night we went was HORRENDOUS. Mayb don't be in the service industry if serving patrons drink is an annoyance to you. Jease. Smile people. read more

I love to sing here. The Staff are very friendly and its a great time to drink. The Pianists/Singers are amazing and interact well with the audience. Its one of the few gay bars that also caters towards straight audiences. read more

Came here on a Saturday night. They had the piano bar downstairs and it was lively. A little too narrow for my tastes though. Upstairs had more of a loungey/club feel to it. It was packed, but surprisingly there were seats. I was able to have a conversation with my friend as well. On Fridays at 11:30 PM, they open the backroom on the second floor for performances. And boy... can they sing. read more

Unfortunately we couldn't stay long because it was so crowded. There is an upstairs and downstairs to this club, but the lower level was so packed we were forced to go upstairs, which was tiny. We were crammed upstairs like sardines. After unsuccessful attempts to grab drinks, we decided to head out. The Duplex was recommended to me by three different people, so I'm going to give it another try next time I'm in NYC though I wasn't impressed with my visit. read more

My friends and I visited this wonderful establishment on a Tuesday in early December for a very dear friends birthday. Needless to say we had a wonderful time!! We started and ended our night with the wonderful staff. The bartenders and cocktail servers were all wonderful, nice, and eager to make you feel right at home upstairs or downstairs. The pianist was superb! His voice and key skills made our entire group very happy. We were lucky enough to be there on a night when 2 other guests were having birthday celebrations as well. Not to mention they take requests and if you have the guts to get up and sing yourself, they just may let you! ;-) read more

I visited The Duplex last night for my first time and it was great! I came to see Cacophony Daniels and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. In addition, the staff was super friendly and helpful and pointed me in the right direction to get to the cabaret theater upstairs. As a 26 year old straight woman, I understand that I am not the targeted demographic if the theater but still felt very welcomed. Also, I had arrived super early for the show and hung out in the upstairs bar for a bit. There was a Rupaul music video playing so I felt right at home! I can't wait to come back soon. read more

Fantastic night out with friends! I am not into piano bars, but the outside seating with a fun, sassy waiter named Josh made it a night to remember. Came here on Saturday night with friends for the cabaret show. Had a God aweful time. It was a one man show. The performer tried doing comedy and was disrespectful to republicans. The comedy portion was not funny at all. I was ready to walk out midway through the show. I guess that's what you get for going to a $15 show. (Although to be fair there's a 2 drink minimum per person so it does come out to a lot more). Anyways the rest of the bar seemed to be nice, good music, packed with people. read more

Fantastic bar/theater! First off, the open mic hosted by Poppi on Wednesday is fantastic. The bar setting is casual and the regulars who come in are great. And on Thursday night there's "On the Rocks with Danny Leary" which will leave you speechless (and maybe a little wet in the pants). Fantastic place, full of smiles. read more

Not familiar with the area, we were just looking for another bar to have a drink. So we walked in downstairs and sat at the bar. There was a guy on the piano, he was funny and very entertaining. As we were enjoying our drinks, he did welcome everyone to the Big Saturday night Gay happy hour. Then, I glanced around and realized we were the only straight couple in there. Last summer a group of my friends and I would meet here Fridays after work and it was great fun. It has the vibe of a gay Cheers, you know the show with Sam the bartender--Ted Danson. Walk in and the guys that work there loudly say hello and ask how your doing, saddle up to the bar and order a drink. I was just there again with a girl friend of mine and it was just as fun. The bartender and waiter were both singing, incredibly well, with the pianist. There was a great mix of of gay and straight. It is west village so the drinks are a little pricey but that is to be expected. read more

Very friendly and straight friendly. Great performers and an excellent time. Stars lost because my group ordered red bulls and got seltzer. Our "shots" were grapefruit juice! What I'm saying is that the drinks are very very week, but we had a great time. Will probably come back. read more

And the surcharge to sit outside and breathe in the fumes of 7th Ave, really? I was in the corner today and Rob the server lashed out at my friend that this is his 'work area' and he needs to back out. That's how you talk to a customer? I love this place. I cannot visit enough. I've never had a bad experience. The musicians are always great - good songs, good banter. Drinks are normally priced. The place some how makes a cliche idea a unique experience. I will never not recommend this place and I will gladly go out of my way to stop it. Bring your friends! read more

Never a dull night at the duplex. First time I went to the duplex was probably ages ago on a drunken night. The staff are some of the friendliest people. For drinks, if you are looking to get your drunk on, go for the shots. If you want to keep it classy keep at those cocktails. Went on a night where there was a different pianist from the lineup, but damn! Our shared love of not liking people and that leaving cake out in the rain and forgetting the recipe song.. awesome! Other memorable events were our Asian representation and how we joked about being fresh off the boat from some rice field hahaha. Ms Saigon references and a quickly composed Asian version of phantom of the opera had me in awe and in admiration of the skill of everyone up on that stage and piano. The Duplex used to be one of the best places to go on a Friday or Saturday night. Gay, straight, old, young...it didn't matter. Everyone was welcome, and everyone had a great time. It was the piano bar to beat all piano bars! Women could go in there for an evening, feel comfortable & not worry about getting hit on by drunk & obnoxious patrons. You met the people around you & joined in the communal experience of live music. I've enjoyed short & long evenings in there with famous, infamous & not-so-famous people. I've had nothing to drink & too much to drink I've watched as Broadway singers debuted songs & as other patrons worked up the courage to sing with a live pianist. I've seen amazing talent & those who truly believed they had amazing talent (but didn't). All the while drinks were good & plentiful. I have nearly 10 years of incredible memories of weekends at the Duplex. Well, times have changed, and it seems the management would rather court drunk millennials who screech along to the piano, the pianist & the singers (both the staff & the patrons), as if it were live karaoke & not a piano bar. The ever-changing parade of bouncers outside are rude & arbitrary, which starts the night on a negative note. Once in, if you're lucky enough to get into the downstairs piano bar, you need to find a place where you won't be assaulted by the vocal stylings of drunkards screaming lyrics off-key at the tops of their lungs. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not against sing-a-longs, but respect for those playing & singing & enjoying the music is crucial to the success of a bar like this.) The talented waitstaff used to do regular sets, which is apparently no longer allowed (or encouraged). The floor used to be incredibly clean for a crowded bar, now it is a sticky, trash-filled mess. ..and now I'm told that Maria, the heart & soul of the Duplex, will no longer be working Friday & Saturday nights? Maria, who has an incredible voice, warm spirit, can sell ice to Eskimos, calm a belligerent drunk & made the most amazing drinks, is no longer the weekend anchor? There is no logical reason for management to remove her (aside from jealousy & a desire to attract a young, drunk, obnoxious crowd). There are so few places in NYC where you can enjoy live music on the weekend without having booked a table & bought tickets in advance. The Duplex was the go-to choice for that. No longer. My concern is for the staff, who will suffer as tips plummet as millennials don't tip as well as more established & wealthy patrons. Unfortunately for New Yorkers, the Duplex is over. We can only hope that management sees the error of their ways & returns the Duplex to its profitable (& enjoyable) past. read more

I had planned a cabaret fundraiser for the ACLU last night and on top of that it was my birthday. I found out that people were refused at the door, so I had less then 20 people in the space and so they cancelled my event. Their loss of a perfectly good night! I won't be coming here again, the set up process was easy until the night of, when people didn't do their jobs and the lack of compassion to let the show go on was just plain wrong. I had to pay $350 cancellation fee, plus the cost of my musicians and cameraman. What a scam! read more

Have had many great times some I remember and some not because I switched from vodka to gin for over 10 years. There is no cover charge and you can stay until closing time. The piono player not only sings but does self efacing gay humor and makes jabs at us uptight straighs. All the bar servers are professioal singers and actors and will at certain times go up and belt out a few tunes or duet with the piano guy and also do comedy. I love this place! Staff is super friendly. The upstairs bartender was amazing! (I'd like to remember her name, however by the time we got through taking various shots, I was entirely too drunk to remember, haha.) Stays VERY crowded on a Friday night. There was no room downstairs so the bouncer told us to go upstairs, which was not much better. Good crowd though, and good music. Amazing piano bar! I was here for drinks with a friend and we sat on the outside, watching people walk by and the traffic, which was nice since the weather was gorgeous outside. We didn't spend much time inside, but we could hear the piano man and singing from the sidewalk, which sounded superb! Drinks are good, atmosphere is very friendly. read more
