The dove was a mixture of great beers but inconsistent food. I would surely return for the beers though. The beer menu is extensive and has a great many Belgian beers. They I think even had some of the Trappist beers on tap, not just in bottles. I love Belgian beers given the high abv and complex flavours, so I was right at home. They also had some more standard ales and lagers but you should opt for a Belgian beer if you visit the Dove. The food was more disappointing though. The menu has an odd mix of English, Flemish, and Thai options. I went for a Thai curry but it wasn't good. Not spicy, very yellow and creamy. An odd menu mix rarely bodes well. read more

Vegan fish and chips??!! Sign me up! Trying to immerse myself in the British culture as much as possible on my trip to London, I decided that I wanted to try fish and chips. Problem is, I don't eat fish. The Dove came to the rescue. The "fish" and chips here is tofu wrapped in nori, that is then beer-battered and fried. Three big pieces are served over a bed of chips, with a side of smashed minted peas and tartar sauce. Being the dumb vegetarian that I am, I thought the tartar sauce was just another side after already eating two of my tofu pieces. Oops. I thought everything was great, and the portion size was huge. The nori definitely gave the "fish" an interesting flavor. The menu here has a few other vegetarian options, as well as non-veg if you're into that. It's pretty big, but when I came here, almost everyone was just drinking rather than eating. The dining area is separate, with very friendly and attentive servers. If you're looking for some yummy vegetarian pub fare, I definitely recommend coming here! read more

The Dove was located near to the airbnb we had and needless to say this was the best meal of all of the locations we went to in the surrounding area. For one reason a lone... those GD macaroni and cheese croquettes. Had I been drinking a little? I sure had. Could that have influenced my palate to be swayed? Absolutely. But all I know is I kept ordering those croquettes over and over and my travel companions... always tried to sneak one or two and I think that says it all. There is something special about being a "foody" when you choose an awesome food and everyone else is jealous of what you ordered and are less enthralled with what they bought... you get a little cocky. The brew and drinks here were all delicious, my friend enjoyed here fish and chips... but I am not a fish guy so I can neither confirm nor deny their delightfulness. And that pea stuff... nope not for me. THE VERDICT: I was hungry and you fed. I was naked and... wait no I was not naked. At least not to my knowledge. The croquettes are all I can really speak to here and my entire review rides on them and nothing else. Personally... I do not have a problem with that. And if you do... WARNING - staff will over charge you and Liz the manager is extremely rude, loud and unprofessional. My girlfriend had paid almost £30 for 2 half pints and a chilli bowl, returning the next morning having noticed the amount, showed the contactless transaction on her current account but was refused a refund. Extremely poor level of judgement and customer service, instead accusing perfectly normal customers of trying to extort money on a Tuesday morning. The owners of the pub should be ashamed and should look at replacing the Manager immediately. read more

This is physically the closest pub to my house. I could actually walk here in my slippers and it would be a little strange but do-able. As for a local, I couldn't ask for a better pub. As I was sat in there last night, it hit me that this pub was the most like home I've ever seen in London. I'm not talking about my living room here I'm talking about the pubs in the village where my parents live. I've live around here for about 3 months now and this is the first time I've actually been in this pub. I've had a pint outside, but not eaten in. I feel so luck to have such a gem on my doorstep. Live music, a huge selection of real ales, ciders and beers, as well as fruit beers, a wonderful selection of home made foods, friendly service and cosy seats make this a prime pub for whiling away the cold winter evenings. The chorizo burger was tasty and the chips were cooked well without being soggy as so many Brit pubs do. This is a great Saturday spot if you want a drink while checking out the Broadway Market. The only reason it's not a 5 in my book is that I wasn't blown away, it's exactly as it should've been. 5s *(for me) are when there is something unexpectedly wonderful, so 4 is typically the best I will give. The Dove Freehouse and Kitchen is my favourite pub in all of Hackney. There are a number of reasons for this, all of which I am excited to write about. Firstly, the Dove is the epitome of the 'cosy' English pub. Its minimal lighting from scattered candles, its fully functioning fire place, its wide variety of board games and its beautifully crafted furniture all contribute to what makes it an ideal winter venue. Secondly, The Dove prides itself on its selection of Belgium beers, which really is quite impressive. There is a menu that provides information about the wide range of beers. My tastes definitely lie on the fruity end of the beer spectrum and I would recommend the Fruli on tap. Thirdly, given the cosy nature of the pub, it is a great place to come for a Sunday roast. They roast is amazing but you have to be quick, the last time I went there was none left by 6pm. That was not the end of the world however, as I ended having the 'wild boar burger'. The Burgers are huge, utterly delicious and good value for under ten pounds. The forth and final reason for this pub being my favourite in Hackney, is the fact that it has the best Guinness around. Yes, a really exceptional Guinness can be hard to find, but they do it here. The Dove is open 7 days a week and is quite busy most evenings. A lot of the time it can be hard to get a table, but be patient and one always turns up. read more

The Dove is a great pub located on Broadway Market. Specializing in selling my own home country's delicious beer (Belgium, that is), this pub evidently knows the good things in life. The inside is divided into many little rooms resulting in many nooks and crannies where you will have to hunt down a free table. Most impressive here, is the food. I challenge you not to feel your mouth water when you smell the delicious aroma wafting from the kitchen and watch a waitress serve a table. It has a good selection of authentic pub and continental style grub which which will not set you back that much. The only problem with this pub is that it is always full. You will have to wait a long time for a table, and fight for it when one gets liberated. There is a separate restaurant area and I would recommend to make a reservation for it if you are planning to head here on a Sunday. read more

Following a Saturday afternoon trip out to Broadway market, my girlfriend, her sister & I dipped into The Dove. This was largely based on the possibility that I could enjoy a vegan meal with my two meat-eating cohorts. Initially, as advertised outside the pub, I wanted to order their beetroot & blackbean burger that was vegan friendly. However, upon ordering I was told it came WITHOUT a bun (as the bun was brioche) and there was no bun to replace it- so, in my eyes, this isn't a "vegan burger", right? No "vegan burger" for me then. Instead, I was on the spot and only had one option remaining - Quinoa chilli. So that's what I had. The girls had chicken pad thai. The food that came was nice enough- nice vegetables, good portions, good flavour. Nothing special, nothing fancy & unable to have what I initially intended to go in for- a simple vegan burger. The pub has a really nice interior, buzzing with locals and a great atmosphere. Good beers on tap too. I would come back for drinks, but not for food. The Yelp two star rating sums it up - "Meh. The layout of the pub is quite nice, I prefer to sit at the back as it's more cosy, the food is really good and the portions are fairly generous and the menu has a nice selection of meat, fish and vegetarian options. The toilets are unisex which is a little strange at first but you get used to it. It gets so busy at the weekend and it can be hard to find a seat but in the summer it's so nice to just sit outside with a glass of Fruli in hand and watch the world go by. read more

I sort of don't want to write a review about the Dove Freehouse on Broadway Market, because then more people might know about it and it'll get even harder to get a seat at the weekends. Selfish, I know. The Dove is a local favourite situated on Broadway Market in Hackney. In the summer, it spills out into the street and on a Saturday you'll get some of the best people watching in London standing outside and watching the hipsters go by. They are famous for their range of Belgian Beers - particularly their Strawberry beer which is so strong they only sell it in half pints! But since I'm not a beer drinker, I love them for their Bloody Mary's which are EPIC. They come in a pint glass and are actually the best I've ever tried, ever (see pic). They make them with port, horseradish and a secret ingredient (I can't tell you, or I'd have to kill you). On a Sunday, the roasts at the Dove are to die for. Order a whole chicken for £20 to share between two of you and grab a board game from the vast and random selection they have available. It's the perfect way to spend a winter sunday. Be warned though. Get there before 2pm or you'll be waiting queuing for a seat. I'll be the smug one in the corner who got there early. read more

When it comes to choice of alcoholic beverage, there are few who could match the Dove for it's liquid temptations. Situated in the popular Broadway Market, the pub established itself through the tough times when the Market didn't exist and thrived. There's many a reason for that. Not only does it have the beer selection from heaven, it serves up a mighty feast too. The ambiance can best be described as enchanting, with four different sections to the building. The main bar space has has room to seat about thirty people, with a little alcove for those romantic discussions. Behind the bar is the restaurant and the downstairs combines eaters and drinkers. In a word, the place is lovely! The wooden beams and lit candles add a warmth that the sterile chain bars could learn from. The staff know their stuff and clearly receive good training. I am jealous of their tasting lessons. read more

This is my local and I love it. If you just want a few pints in the evening, the staff are friendly and quick, the drinks yums. They have a plentiful choice of beers/ ales if that float your boat. There are board games a plenty and the toilets are sexy and unisex. There is outside seating to absorb the evening sunshine as the days get longer. I'm deliriously happy they have Delirium Tremens on tap here along with a string of other pretty good beers (Duvel, Chimay, etc). Prices are quite reasonable with two pints and a glass of wine coming in at just a touch over £11. The pub itself is quite winding with several levels and tables stacked in a chaotic yet somehow orderly fashion. The benefit of this system is readily apparent when you finally discover a table and realise its quite easy to have a conversation despite the pub being packed. Which brings up another point, this place was full on a Tuesday night and not a banker (myself excluded) in sight. Sounds like a win. read more

Situated on Broadway Market, the Dove is right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Hackney. They have a great range of beer, everything from dark ales, lagers, to speciality beers. They take pride in their Belgian beer selection and even have strawberry beer on tap for those who feel like something sweeter. There's a separate seating area to one side which is reserved for diners only, and quieter than the area next to the bar. Great for Sunday lunch, the Dove has the usual pub grub and a changing menu of more upmarket dishes. Affordable but not cheap, mains starting at just less than a tenner. It's a buzzing place, and can get very crowded, so its usually difficult to find a table. The tables outside are gold dust, a perfect spot to people watch on Broadway Market. This is one of my favorite pubs in the area, although often too busy to get a table, it always has a relaxed vibe and mostly friendly clientele. Choose from the huge selection beer, fight for a table and grab one of the board games, a perfect way to spend a quiet afternoon. Nothing about this pub from the outside tells you what you're going to find inside. It does look like a regular boring pub, one that you could be tempted to keep walking past in the hunt for something a bit cooler. But you'd be wrong. Inside is a split level drinking-come-eating hole with a great range of belgian and continental beers on tap, as well as the regular tipples. It's a big old place yet there were no tables available on a Thursday night at 8pm. Everyone was nattering away or eating or just unwinding. This is somewhere you can get over yourself and just have a beer. I'm going to get back here when it's warmer and fight for some the outside seating (which was also in heavy demand, in February). An excellent pub on Broadway market about which I have lots of positive things to say. The beer choice is probably the best that I've seen in London, with delicous Belgian beers alongside ales, lagers and stout. The design of the place is also nice with the traditional wooden interior and its charming, tucked-away nooks and crannies. There is also a selection of board games, a comprehensive menu and some very modern-looking unisex and surprisingly dim toilets. What can I criticise it for? Well, its definitely too full whenever I seem to visit, and getting a table can be tough. The food could be cheaper too, as its solidly reliable but nothing special. But all in all, this is the one pub on Broadway I go back to again and again. read more

The Dove is always good and has been for years. We went there on Saturday night and had a great London Fields experience. Supping a massive selection of beers in a wood panelled room with a rag tag bunch of locals and lycra wearing hipsters. Awesome. I would also say that the bar staff were possibly the friendliest staff I have ever come across. I almost considered tipping as I was buying rounds (which I never do in English bars); that friendly. A perfect pub in a perfect location that will make you feel like a regular as soon as you step in. The Dove is wonderful, a really charming find smack bang in the middle of Broadway Market. Jumped in here on a Sunday evening and were greeted with a comforting smell of roast meats and a lovely live jazz trio playing some great tunes. The bar is very well stocked, plenty of beers and some really unique finds that I've yet to see anywhere else. The Cherry Beer was certainly a favourite! Although we ate elsewhere, the passing food looked excellent, very healthy portion sizes that made us instantly regret our decision not to dine. We ended up spending most of the evening here and this is a credit to the staff, all more than helpful and really friendly. They've got an excellent selection of board games and to be honest what's better for a sunday than a few pints and a cluedo challenge, love it. If you are near Broadway Market then make sure you pop in! We most recently went to The Dove on Sunday evening after going for a walk. It was ideally located at the mid-point of our walk so we decided it would be rude to not stop off for a beer especially as they always have at least two gluten-free beers available at any given time. I tried the gluten-free Buckwheat beer which I'm reliably informed has the taste of a white beer! We sat by the door chatting about the week ahead and I have to say it was a perfect end to the weekend. I have eaten at The Dove too and have to commend them for the fact that their food menu is not only excellent but easy to navigate if you are gluten-free or vegetarian. There are plenty of options and they often do dishes with a Thai influence which are also delicious. The staff are very knowledgeable about allergens and cross contamination which made the dining experience that much more enjoyable for myself and my boyfriend as we knew we were in good hands. read more

Went here last night and we liked it! The beer selection is over the top! A trappist's dream! I had an Orval and my wife had a champagne of beers (I done forgot the name). Then we both had guiness cold. Mmmmmm. On a rec from our table neighbors, I had the green curry chicken special with jasmine rice. Excellent. The basil and eggplant stood out while the chicken was tender and juicy. My wife had the ostrich burger, which was also good, but not excellent. The service was a little tardy. I'm always a fan of a local pub that has its own food menu instead of masquerading as something unique that's actually a Weatherspoon's or Nicholson's. It's full of tables, nooks, back rooms and booths for all sorts of meals and meetups. They've got a fantastic selection of Belgian draught beers, and decent noms. The menu straddles the divide between Thai and Italian, and while nothing is epic, it's all pretty satisfying. If it rains on a market day, prepare for every seat to disappear in minutes! read more

This place does such an amazing amount of beer! The food is also really good, bison burgers - Kudu sausages and even organic full english breakfast on Saturday morning with an awesome bloody mary, it's great breakfast food. Other places on Broadway market take music, loud groups while The Dove Freehouse seems to just love all things that are great to do with beer. You can talk, have a great drink and some lovely food in an unpretentious relaxing vibe. The dining room is relaxed and the staff very friendly. My only gripe is that it is sometimes hard to get somewhere to sit down. On the street is always an option and gives you a chance to watch the strange, odd and sometimes beauitful people go by. I would recommend The Dove Freehouse for a medium size of friends who want to enjoy a chilled out weekend meal read more

Wandered in here during a storm to escape the rain - a lot of other people had the same idea so it was packed but nice. It was darker inside so you felt like you weren't in an insanely crowded place, even though we were. We drank some beers and chatted and waited for the storm to pass. When it didn't for awhile the bartender was nice enough to call us a cab. Great service and great selection of beer. read more

The Dove is a cracking pub. The beer selection is immense and of a high quality (the British ales are brilliant, as are the Belgians, for which The Dove is better known). The food in the adjoining restaurant is an odd-but-tasty combo of pub-grub and Thai at typical gastro pub prices. In many ways, the only downside is its popularity. On a weekend it is wall to wall with post-market hipsters, which means slow service for food and fighting through skinny jean-clad crowds to get to the bar. read more

Though I am not much of a beer or ale drinker, I will pop in when in the area, as it is such a lovely old pub. Loads of character and anyone who is a beer or ale fan will be spoilt for choice. I haven't eaten in here; prices seem quite cheap, though I have noticed plates half finished, so maybe food isn't their thing. Two brilliant things to do when you have great beers. Being Belgian myself, a place like this is heaven for me. We've been twice already. Last summer on a Saturday when the market was on. This is a perfect opportunity to try out lots of different things and foods on the street and take a break in the sun with a good beer on their outdoor space. The second time was when we were doing a walk along the canal not that long ago. Broadway market is the perfect location to take a break in between the walking and go for a drink. The Dove Freehouse is almost next to the canal. Their selection of beers is truly amazing and a lot more than the average bar in Belgium. I always try the ones I definitely can't find somewhere else or in the supermarkets. One tinny snobbish comment: my second beer wasn't served in the right glass last time. I know, sound absolutely ridiculous, but we Belgians are quite fond on that! ;) read more

I have to second what's been said before about the range of beers; there's some here that I've not seen (or drunk) anywhere else. Delerium is 9% - which I suppose justifies the expensive price tag, and that they only serve it halfs! The mini size benches at the front are good for people watching if you enjoy the bustle of Broadway market under your nose, and inside has a kind of Gallic cavern cafe feel to it, with oodles of atmosphere. The loos are unisex which takes a little getting used to! Definitely a talky pub not a dancy one. read more

I visited this pub in the afternoon on a weekday. Not the busiest time usually, but it still had a comfortable amount of people in. Enough to stop it feeling empty. The décor is fabulous. Lots of wood, and separate little nooks and crannies to sit in. Carvings and ornaments all over. Though I didn't stop for a drink the barman I talked to was quick to respond to some enquiries I had, and went to someone else quickly when he couldn't help. So good service points there. They do a range of real ale, and do food (with a separate eating area and a tasty looking menu). I have a feeling it's probably packed at times. I certainly have it on my list of places to go should I need somewhere to take someone down Broadway Market! read more

I love the Dove and the Dove loves me. No, seriously. Who could resist the siren call of orange scented trappist ales, Belgian beers you sound stupid trying to pronounce and a warm candlelit polished teak interior that has just the right level of the 'romance factor' to meet up with someone you fancy for a first date, while simultaneously not being too schmaltzy (which would of course send said date running for the hills)? Not me. That's why on my cycle route home my bike always seems to (ahem) 'break down' (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!) outside that pub. Then I see the Fruli I say to myself: Sorry, I have no willpower. I must enter. The possibility of me going teetotal is nil, thanks to that place. What I like about it most though is the feel you get when you go in; it's inviting and relaxed, with its gaudy old golden chandeliers and candles stood up in wax-coated bottles, it does have a whiff of the cool about it but it's friendly; without being crammed with tryhards like the Crown at the top of the road. This means that when you trip over someone's bag, accidentally bump someone or ask someone to move their seat in (the place is almost always crammed like a Monday morning on the tube) people still do so gladly, unlike in some other places (mentioning no names, George and Dragon Shoreditch) where you get given the 'hairy eyeball' every five seconds. The beer range is nearly exemplary. It's not as wide as say De Hems in Soho, but still very respectable. Expect to snag some rare ales, honeyed beers, tropically flavoured wheat beers and frequent guest beers that make you seriously consider finding ways to get that drink on tap. At home. read more

Good range of beers, mediocre food. Lived in London Fields for 8 years before Broadway Market went all twatty and of course went here in 2001 when the Observer and Time Out were raving about it at a time when the only other redeeming feature of Broadway market was cheap crack. Since then I have been back for a cherry beer from time to time but baffled why people love this place so much, its grotty inside and all the food comes with iceburg lettuce like a throwback from the 70's served by transexual Thai's from the basement. This place is nice on a Saturday lunchtime when you have just spent £200 on organic celery and olives from the farmers market and you can wash it all down with a glass of draught cherry beer, as for eating here, I'd rather eat at one of Michael Barrymoore's pool parties. read more
