Totally disagree with Derry here. When I knew I was headed to London for the first time - (to hang out with my little sister who was studying abroad) I decided to look up any Belgian bars in the area (something I've been known to do when I travel) and found - The Lowlander. The Lowlander was wonderful. It was close to the Underground and near my sister's dorm - I used my Google map to find it and it was super easy to get there (not something you can say about everywhere in London) It was a bit crowded on the Thursday night were were there, but not awful - we were the only ones waiting for a table at about 7:30pm or so, we got a couple of beers at the bar and quickly found some seats after a couple left. It's a little tight packed in there, but once we got a table we stayed for a good 2 hours enjoying some truly delicious pub food and um...amazing beers. I loved the atmosphere - it was large and open without feeling overwhelming but had a few nooks and crannies for drinking. And the beer selection was truly worthy. I also thought the the service was respectable and lightly friendly without being "uncool" - and it wasn't far from where my sister was staying near Tottenham Court - so the streets in the area were busy with a lot of foot traffic - but Drury lane was enough away from the main area to give it a "tucked away" feeling After seeing a couple of tables with one, we went for the "paddle." 9 beers from the tap - a sampler - this was truly the way to go. The glasses were not wimpy or small like the ones they have in America - they were pretty hearty - and we finished them off together. I also tried a beer I've yet to see in the States - it was one of the best beers I've ever had and the name is completely fitting - Hoegaarden's Forbidden Fruit. We had such an amazing time there - we tried to go back before our trip was over but it was a Saturday night and the bar was way too packed (it was summer and hello, awesome bar, I can see why) - however, though we didn't get to partake again, my sister was grateful for the find and friends and her frequented it a lot before returning home. Definitely a must if you want to get some real, and hard to find beer while in London.

Despite being literally just off the junction of Great Queen Street and Drury Lane, a few hundred yards away from Covent Garden Market as well as the Seven Dials, Lowlander Grand Cafe is surprisingly never that busy. Like the Belgo restaurants in its angle (big lists of Belgian beers and delicious-sounding menu options), Lowlander pulls off comfortably cool with greater finesse. The seating area is small yet has a great sense of space. The decor is wooden and homey (rather than metal and industrial). And the beer menu is actually longer than those at the Belgo establishments around the corner. The service has always been on the average-to-good side on my visits. The servers are just as content for you to come and have a couple drinks as they are for you to order food, so there's no need to feel bad about monopolizing a table if you're not eating. Especially since you'll probably end up spending £20 alone on drinks. Coming in thinking you'll just have a glass or two, one 8% ABV drink leads to another (and to another) and you've lost your capacity for rational thought. Although the forest-berry wheat beer on draught that I had yesterday was only £2.95 per half-pint and damn tasty to boot. Recession-busting win! The drinks menus boast of several different themed beer-tasting parties available upon booking. I imagine this would be a fun night out for a special occasion, although the one party that required a sommelier had a hefty £160 sommelier fee. Oi.

Really nice Belgian bar. Was here on a Saturday night, as you can imagine it was very crowded, yet not overwhelming. We were meeting some friends who recommended this place, and I am glad they did. We got a chance to catch up despite the noise and the din. We didn't get beers as we stopped at a pub earlier ( as in 30 minutes earlier)! We went straight for the food. Hubby got the chicken Cesar Salado got the smoked mackerel salad, both salads were tasty, but portions were shockingly small in comparison to the US. We also got the double dutch fried fries which were excellent, just delicious. Garlic bread was OK, not great. Shame on me for not getting a beer, will have to go back and get the "Belgian" experience. I already know what I am getting the next time - Mussels and the beer sampler for sure!

Always a good bar to visit, great range of beers and some nice food. Particularly like the sharing platters. Service can be a bit slow at times, so you might need to give the waiter a nudge!

Lowlander exceeded my expectations, both for its beer and food. Beer-wise, it had a good range. Much of which I recognised from my days in Brussels, and some that I didn't. They also had an unusually excellent house wheat beer, which I happily guzzled a couple of pints of alongside other favourites of mine such as Tripel Karmeleit. I liked the option to try 3 x 1/3 pints of different beer, although I didn't take advantage of it. True to Belgian beer, it was pricey, but that just comes with the territory. The food was much better than other reviews would have you believe too. I went for a not-so-Belgian (unless you count it as stoempe) Cumberland sausages, gravy and mash, which was perfectly decent. I then followed it with a waffle and scoop of ice cream which was okay but probably out of a packet. Also worth mentioning is the high-ceilinged interior, reminiscent of the similarly styled bars in Brussels. The service could have been slightly better, but I can still happily declare myself a fan of this place.

This place gets 5 stars for the beer list alone. I'm a huge fan of Belgian beer and this place has a huge selection. There should be something to suit everyone taste...even if you don't normally drink beer. The bar is a large split level space and is quite bright and spacious compared with your standard london drinking holes. We got the truffle and Parmesan fries which were excellent, if not a touch oily, buts that's good thing when your beer is 11% alcohol.

The range of beers and ales here never seems to amaze. They even have a banana flavoured ale (as disgusting as it sounds). The service is prompt, friendly and efficient. The space is generous for a Drury Lane location. The walls are painted with logos of large and old Belgian breweries. There are long tables that can be shared by smaller groups or used entirely by large parties. The tables have coat hooks. They even have three ceiling fans on three corners of the wooden grooved ceiling. There is a beautiful golden framed mirror on the wall next to the main bar area, with mirror tiles on it. The food menu is Belgian. Dutch fries, ham and cheddar cheese croquettes, sausage, cheese and bread snacks. Beef sausages, slow cooked pork, halloumi Milanese and beer battered goujons. Pretty much pub fare. Average to good in quality. The drinks menu is divided into Draught, Amber/Dark Beers, Blonde/Golden Ales, Abbey beers, and flavoured beers. Incredible range. Highly recommended for a possibly pseudo authentic Belgian experience.

I'm not a big beer fan but since my boyfriend's Belgian I enjoy trying the things he loves to do. Drinking beer is in his blood, and he actually bartended here before getting settled with his full-time job. His love of this place influenced me. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and you can either sit and relax, or stand by the bar and be loud. I personally like the sit on the comfy chairs opposite the bar and get food... they have great mussels with butter sauce and a filling meat platter, which is great to share with friends. I always order the fruit beer but they are known to have a diverse selection of Belgian beer. Sometimes it gets packed and rowdy but it's a cozy place to go in a group since the setting is very welcoming and the beer choices are limitless. The staff are also very nice... overall I always had a good time here.

Lowlander is a great pub. Easy to get to and with an extensive beer menu. They have guest lists of beers that are always changing. As a fan of Belgian beer this was the perfect spot to come to. We had mussels and pulled pork. The pulled pork was flavorful and had a wonderful side of coleslaw. Only issues was if it's busy do not expect a very attentive waitress (fair enough and understandable) and incredibly loud. Lots and lots of yelling. Nice interior though and as mentioned before great beer options.

Selection of what is on tap on top, the rest you have to see for yourself.

We unexpectedly found ourselves in London 2 years later and again had a hankering for a Belgian beer joint.

After visiting Shakespeare's Globe across the Thames River, I was rushing to the airport and…read morespotted this place near St. Paul's church after crossing Millennium Bridge. Given the location, I knew it was probably a tourist trap and I wish to avoid those usually but had no time so stopped in on a Monday afternoon for lunch. I'm so glad I did! I was in London only briefly and had yet to try proper fish and chips and I was definitely WOW'd. I've only had this in America, and this was definitely better than anything I've ever had. When it arrived on my table, I could feel the heat from the plate -- that's how scalding hot and fresh it was, and I loved that! The cod was absolutely massive, a thick portion of fish deep fried with the skin on within an incredibly crunchy beer batter. There were pieces of bone in it, but no bother, this only made it seem more fresh. The chips (thick cut fries) were perfectly crispy and both the fish and chips were insanely delicious with a bit of salt and malt vinegar (which I had to request by walking up to the bar). The dish came with a tartar sauce and ketchup, but tasted way better with the salt and vin. I absolutely love that the fish and chips also came with mushy peas, whereas most pubs only give you fish and chips alone. The dish was also very well priced at 9.95 GBP, and I was able to use my credit card, rounded up to 10 GBP because they have a 10 GBP minimum for using cards. I appreciate that this restaurant had free wi-fi, which I found out by asking my waiter, who quickly provided the secret code for me to use. In America you would never ask your server for this but I noticed that nearly every hotel and restaurant I visited during my 11-day tour of Europe offered wi-fi. Good on them, because how else would I check in to a restaurant on Yelp and shower them with praise and circulate promotional foodie photos on Instagram? During a weekday, many workers nearby flood this place to grab a pint during lunch....now, why don't I work in London? I would give this place five stars based on the food alone, but I am giving it four because I wished the service had been more attentive, as I had to go up to the bar to get malt vinegar and also to ask to pay my bill. I understand service in Europe is more laissez-faire than in America, but since this is a tourist spot I would have liked to be checked on by the staff at least once during my meal, and certainly to be presented with the bill. Note: They also serve Sunday roast dinner for 9.95 GBP on Sundays

Being from the states I am not as familiar with all the UK brands --- but they seem to offer a wide variety of beers (lots on tap) and cocktails. TIP: I recommend hitting this place before 5:30 on the weekdays as the happy hour crowd fills this join up.

We arrived just after the work day, and the crowd was buzzing just outside. We did the self-seating option indoors, and sat down to a great view of the Thames river, as we pondered our meal choices from the menu. The location is just great. For a leadoff drink, I had to go with the house cask ale, which was the Fuller's ESB, a drink I've been enjoying since the 1990's, and it delivered as expected. I went with an order of Sausages with mashed potatoes and peas...it doesn't get much more classic than that, and I was happy with it, especially with the quantity (3 sausages!). Wifey was on the hunt for a meat pie, and she went with the Steak, Ale & Mushroom Pie, which I can report was wholeheartedly approved. One of the better pies we've had on the overall trip, and the best we had at a pub location. The overall vibe of this pub is exactly as you might picture it, and we weren't disappointed with any aspect. Service, though not overly patient (hey - they were busy), was competent and pleasant. Cheers!
