The wife and I grabbed dinner here, wanting an alternative to the countless Greene King pubs in Kensington where we were staying. The aesthetic was nice and food was good, but prices are inflated. Another minor critique is, if you are eating they make you wait to be seated and bill after the meal, like a restaurant instead of a traditional pub. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves but the prices should have been ~25% less in my opinion. read more

Book ahead as it's a popular spot. We get there early for our reserved table and all the tables are reserved. Sunday roast is the popular dish and we had it with beef. Great roast. Great that they give you gravy because the meat is usually drier. Fried calamari is ok nothing special. read more

An absolutely perfect lunch spot in Notting Hill! Located at the very "beginning" of the Portobello Road Market, we heard about The Sun in Splendour from a family member, and stopped in on a Sunday. I was excited to see that they had a Sunday Roast on the menu, so I ordered that was no hesitation! It did not disappoint. At. All. I had the beef version, which also comes with Yorkshire pudding, potatoes, gravy, and cabbage. A ton of food, but I happily ate nearly all of it. They also brought out horseradish and some super spicy but delicious English mustard. I also had a delicious espresso martini. They were booked up on a Sunday around 1, but had plenty of space in, what they referred to as, the Garden, which is really just a lovely back patio. I was thrilled with this as it was a beautiful day outside, and I happily enjoyed my espresso martini. Smoking is totally welcome on the patio, by the way, so if that bothers you it made be an issue, but it has plenty of ventilation as the roof is open. They also have heaters all around if you get cold. Service was pleasant. They aren't really milling around the back patio, but made sure we had everything we needed. read more

This is a neighborhood pub around the corner from where we are staying in London's Kensington area. We wanted a drink and a light dinner, and were extremely pleased to find this dish of grilled pork sausage with a delicious gravy, crisp onions, and mash made with clotted cream. It exceeded all expectations. We shared the dish, and had a couple of perfectly executed drinks - a mojito and a blackberry old fashioned. We finished with a couple of hand-crafted sodas, lime and raspberry. These were exceptional and refreshing. Service was a little hit or miss, but otherwise a very good experience. The girls and I went to the Notting Hill area on a busy Saturday. The area is crowded due to markets and the general cute aesthetics. Due to one of the girls seeing this pub on her last visit, we all decided to grab "linner" (dinner and lunch combined) here. The restaurant was quite busy at the 3pm hour. The hostess prompted us to the bar area, and assured a table would be ready while we ordered drinks. We got an assortment of drinks for the table, all costing 10.50 gbp per drink, and I notably purchased a mojito. The drinks were either very strong, or we were just not able to hold alcohol that day. When it came time to order, two of us got the classic fish and chips (which were my first fish and chips in the UK, high standards) and a veggie burger. The food took a bit of time to come in, which I guess is justified due to the crowd of the weekend and the euro cup playing. When the food came, the first thing I noticed was the big fish (shown in the photo below) hid the fries. However, when I lifted it up, there was little to no actual fries on my plate. This fact disappointed me as the meal alone was 18 gbp ($23), not including the mojito. It was decent fish and chips, but I would argue that they were not worth the price tag. I believe the whole restaurant, due to the location, up charged almost everything on the menu. The meal was not filling, so we ended up getting some market dessert classics in the area. read more

Everyone is happy:) There was Jamie the wonder man who greeted us at the door, then kept our food and drinks coming for over an hour, causing us to laugh in between. The music and ambiance keeps the vibe positive. The food was amazing! Not a single basic item on the menu- even the cheese with our starter was beautiful and delicious. The cocktails are amazing. We popped into Sun in Splendour today after a long walk around the city. This place is a fantastic British Pub. It is just off the busy main streets of Notting Hill. They serve food as well, but we only went for drinks. It is very cozy, but has plenty of room to move around. The staff are super friendly and crank out drinks very quickly. We ordered some drinks and lingered for a while over conversation but they never rushed us or pestered us for ordering another round. We thoroughly had a good time and recommend it if you are in Notting Hill and looking for a pint. read more

My son and I enjoyed a heaping portion of fresh chips with our tasty fish. The service was a bit slow as there only seemed to be one person working. But we weren't in a hurry. I was convinced that this pub was going to be a tourist trap based upon its location at the end of Portobello Road. Was pleasantly surprised to find that they offered a fixed price lunch menu (£10 for two courses or £13 for three). We were served by a friendly waitress who informed us that they didn't have any ales on at all which surprised me as this was a Friday lunchtime. I opted for gammon, egg and fries. The gammon was lean, thick and flavourful. I chose Vanilla Pod Ice Cream with crushed amaretto biscuits for dessert. This was nicely presented as was the main course. The service was very slow (there were only two people to cover the bar and serve all the meals). We requested ketchup and mayonnaise and it took about 10 minutes to materialise. The desserts took a while too. I wasn't fond of the decor as it appeared scruffy (shabby chic?) and the restaurant area was chilly. Aside from the fixed price menu, it seemed expensive (£4.90 for a pint of beer!) but was soon full of customers. Not a bad option if you're in the area. read more

Great value for a Sunday roast. Roasts cost £12-15 and you get a tasty, large portion for that money. All of the other Sunday roasts in the area charge £17 and up which is a bit crazy. The roast beef was yummy, though had a few tough bites. The Yorkshire pudding had some herbs mixed into the batter but that was just a nice treat. The gravy was clearly the star of the plate and I made sure to soak up every drop with my meat. The nut roast was also really nice and very filling for any vegetarians out there. Though we were quite stuffed from the roast, we sill had enough space for some dessert. The sticky toffee pudding was warm, gooey and everything you'd want from the dish. Other friends tried the salted caramel and chocolate cheesecake and the chocolate brownie and were not overly impressed. We were exhausted as we had just landed in London that morning and, in typical tourist fashion, wanted something authentic - Sun in Splendour did not disappoint. We had fish & chips as well as steak pie - and they were all amazing. The fish was perfectly battered and cooked and the pie was everything i dreamed of. Dear Fellow Foreigners This was our last day in London. Parting is such sweet sorrow. With our flight leaving at 5:00, we had some time to kill. My wife was determined to get us to a Sunday roast, but we wanted to stay in the area. Hence, based off of Yelp reviews and especially photos, we decided on Sun in Splendour. We got there about an hour before Roast, which started at 12, so we killed some time with some hot drinks. They put a lot of love into them, and I can honestly say that was a damn good latté. Then we came to our senses and got some beer. Great selection to choose from, and they were able to recommend some based off of our tastes. Spot-on recommendations! The food had room for opportunity. We got a simple meal: cinnamon sourdough toast (simple and satisfying), the Sunday beef roast, and the Sticky Toffee Pudding. The beef roast was dry and very overdone, which was disappointing because the pictures from previous Yelpers showed a juicy, medium to medium-well cook on it. The vegetables, gravy and potatoes were delicious, however. I'm guessing we caught them on a bad day. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was deeee-lishus! I ate it all up, and cleaned the plate, too. Definitely a great way to top off the meal. Although my wife thought it was too sweet, I gladly took the responsibility of easing her burden by eating it myself. If I could, I would come back again to try on another day. I can tell the flavors are there, but either the temperature was too high or the cook time was too long. Tiny garden area in the back, LOTS of tiny stairs to get to the Ladies, so beware if spiral staircases aren't easy for you. I just had some wine and moved on, but feel confident in recommending. As I work near Notting hill, I've walked by this pub on many occasions, but hadn't stopped in. I was very pleased to finally pop in on Saturday evening with a friend. The pub had a collection of what some might call a haphazard collection of furniture, but the overall atmosphere is cozy and welcoming- and warm, exactly what we needed on a cold winters night! The mulled cider with a shot of rum was lovely and fresh, staff was super friendly and the only food we had (chips) were crispy and delicious. You'll find the Sun in Splendour on the famous Portobello road not far from the tube station. There's a good mix of locals and tourists although the tourists heavily out weight the locals on a Saturday so that may be a day to stay clear if you're a local Londoner. The best feature about this pub is the amazing secret garden which you'll now find full of smokers but it's really gorgeous with flowers, covers to shelter from the rain, heaters and it's beautifully lit with candles. I highly recommend Sunday lunch (either the lamb or beef one) and they have some good beers and wines on offer usually ranging between £3.00 to £5.00 (this is Portobello so be prepared for prices). All food is traditional pub grub and they have some bar snacks like onion rings etc. The staff are pretty good and I've been in one day when they had a live band which was great fun and when they don't have live acts on (which i believe is quite rare) they play a decent selection of 90s classics and modern day tunes. All in all I would definitely recommend this place. read more

I found my way to this pub once after spending the day out in the markets, Exhausted and worn out I was immediately fond of this friendly looking pub. The wallpapers with flowers, shady lightning and wooden tables creates intimate and lovely atmosphere. Good and uncomplicated place for glass of good wine and just relaxing. I can imagine this place being a popular among the locals at least I would go more often if I lived more closer. Next summer I definitely need to go and check the garden. read more

Just so you know, at night, the outside of this bar looks yellow/green. So, if you are looking for a blue place, you'll be misled. So, it's just like any other bar. It's larger than most, so good for groups. I don't see what is so special about it, though. Like, Hugo B. says he's been going there since 1974. Why? I am giving this pub a 3 stars because while I enjoyed the company I was with, this was just a typical British pub in my opinion. Highlights: - It is conveniently located. Just about a block or so from the Notting Hill Gate Tube Station. - This would probably be a good place to pop into if you were on Portabella looking at the shops -- however because of the market I imagine it is quiet busy on Saturdays. - It is beautifully decorated! The ambiance is great! Lowlights: - I was treated very rudely by a young lady at the bar. - The food was below average. If something is going to be fried, I feel like you should be told so on menu! Barely two minutes walk from Notting Hill Gate, This is a beautiful little boutique pub on the corner of Portobello Road. I guess it's the decor that makes the place, think lampshades, designer wallpaper and plenty of elevated mirrors. Even the pillars are gilded. I got quite excited to see Kirin beer on tap, and there were a number of decent bottled belgian beers in the fridge too, not forgetting the wonderful Italian lager Morretti. This is definitely a good place for smokers/those that have friends what smoke; the archietecture of the secret garden (which sadly closes at 930pm) allow for some partial covering, which with the timed halogen lights combines to give a atsmosphere sufficiently snug that even the health fascists will sit outside with you! Nice little pub in Notting Hill. Cosy, quirky, and friendly. The interior design - chandeliers, mirrors, etc - is just over-the-top enough to make it really interesting without being annoying. Their wine list is also too good to have been accosted by my already-inebriated self. We stopped at this pub after visiting Portobello Road's shops. What a quaint place. My mushroom risotto was perhaps one of the best meals I had in London. A generous serving of risotto with lots of mushrooms and pecorino topped with crunchy pumpkin seeds. Fantastic! Hubby enjoyed his British beef burger as well. This pub does take American Express. I really can't decide about this place. The atmosphere was good, but there is a number of people that come in which give the place a sour taste. Average drinks choice and a limited food choice. The outside is a hive of smokers, which makes it rather undesirable. The barmen also good moody when we asked him to top up our pints. I won't be going back in a rush. read more
