I have been practicing Aikido at Fort Collins Aikikai for a little over three years now and it has…read moreproven to be one of the greatest experiences of my life. The atmosphere is very welcoming, friendly, and relaxed. All ages and sizes are encouraged to attend and the instruction is second to none. The dojo has become like my second home. O'Hara Sensei brings over 18 years of martial arts training to bear. And, while his advanced training can be very practical and precise, he encourages all students to explore and find their own "AiKi" methods. In the end, Aikido is about improving yourself. From the first day I have been learning and I continue to learn more with every class. This summer, Fort Collins Aikikai is actually providing FREE classes on Tuesdays. This is an extraordinary opportunity for anyone who has been curious about self-defense but, maybe, has been deterred by the cost. The only detractor is that the practice space is a little difficult to find. We work out in a community space that is not well marked located next to Fusion Massage. There is another Aikido dojo just around the corner with a HUGE sign. That is the wrong place. The dojo does NOT face Mason St. It is located in the parking lot complex that contains the Foundations Music School. This is NOT "Aikido of Fort Collins"! Fort Collins Aikikai is not a business. It is an Aikido club, made up of individuals who are interested in learning and sharing the philosophy and art of Aikido.

The people at the gym are like family and truly supportive. A great place to push yourself physically, strengthen mentally, and find a silent warrior inside yourself. Thank you, McMahon.

I can't say enough good things about Jordan, Caleb, Thomas, Ryan and Riley. All the other coaches seem great too, but those are the ones I and my son interacted with the most. My teenager really enjoyed the classes--learning to push himself, develop new skills, and eventually, as he got into the adult classes, sparing. I wasn't interested in sparing or rising the ranks--which there is a lot of opportunity to do at McMahon. For me, however, it was more about physical fitness and trying something out of my comfort zone, and I was welcomed just the same. I really appreciate that they take students at whatever place they are and foster an environment open to all varieties of goals and abilities. There is also a growing women's group that's very welcoming and inclusive. Overall, a great place!
