Well, this pub really wasn't all that great, and can become rather packed, and this was a Sunday, but I suspect it might have had something to do with the Grandprix on. In a way it is a typical Wan Chai pub.

It otherwise had a very pleasant flavour profile. They also made a decent gin and tonic. I tried the Calamari, a Hawaiian and Supreme pizza, jalapeno cheddar fries and potato skins. The Calamari was good, crispy on the outside, and only slightly chewy on the inside, though the tzatziki that came with it was a bit too plain. It could've been more acidic, and had more cucumber, but otherwise it was a nice effort, considering how Greek yogurt is hard to come by in Hong Kong. I the Hawaiian and Supreme pizza are okay. The Supreme pizza had a strange bitterness to the crust, but the Hawaiian pizza was quite good, soft crust, flavourful toppings and stringy cheese. The jalapeno cheddar fries were crunchy, but the use of those individually vacuum packaged "cheddar" that they sell on at grocery stores and try to pass off as "cheese" really let the dish down. I mean sure, it's not a particularly expensive item, but people like their cheddar fries a bit gooey, not slimy. The potato skins were good, with just enough toppings to match the potatoes. They also used proper cheese cheddar cheese (strangely enough), so I was pleasantly surprised by it. I like how this location is much more spacious than their other Wan Chai locations, while still maintaining the same mid-range prices on drinks. Having brewed in-house craft beers is a huge plus for this place, but it seems that the brews just need to be polished a bit more before they can be truly great.

On weekdays they have happy hour from 3-8pm where the Czech beer are 30% off. They do have other beers, like Corona, Peroni, Hoegaarden, but naturally I picked a Pilsner, as it's a style of lager invented by Czech, even though I admitted it's not favorite style. If beer is not your beverage they also have lots of other drinks, even mocktails. Our favorite dish is the bone marrow. It's a halved bone topped with succulent shreds of oxtail and fried onion. There are some bread for us to scope the tofu-soft marrow and oxtail on, and every bite is rich and delicious. The duck leg is another winner, not too dry, and comes with some sauerkaut. For pork knuckle, I've only tried the German version in the past. This one is fried, with a crispy skin redolent of Chinese BBQ siu yuk. It's a huge portion. The mustard that comes with it is a little bland though. We also get some pierogi, which is a European dumpling filled with potato. I find the pierogi here a it on the dry side. Others I've tried usually have some cheese inside, to give it a moister and smoother texture. I'd also like more sour cream on top, it would have helped with the dryness. Overall, it's interesting to explore a new cuisine.

We obviously arrived much too early - 7:30PM. It was filled with older people just chilling after work. Drinks were cheaper at that time (before 9PM) - only 50 HK for a draft Guinness beer. We ordered some fries on the side and it came on a cute dim sum brown plate. The "fun" really begins after around 11PM. This is when people decide they want to dance on the bar and I guess it's accepted by the bartenders/owners/whatnot. Beware - guys start stripping off their shirts, girls try to jump onto the bars with heels (many failing and falling to their near deaths), and popping American styled music loud in the air. Like other reviewers have mentioned, be wary of your belongings here. Located in the Wan Chai district, it is filled with more locals and not quite as "safe" as the touristy clubbing district Lan Kwai Fong. Being super packed, your cell phone/wallet can be easily stolen. Overall I had a fun night but didn't quite love the atmosphere as much as I did at the Lan Kwai Fong district - which reminded me of a better Vegas ;)

We went to it for lunch- they used to serve a 98 HKD buffet which considering you are actually in Wanchai makes it incredibly cheap. You may start think that the food will reflect the price and......you would be half way there. I would say that they do serve some surprising items (such as roast beef in thin slices) but some of the other items do seem a little bit tacky such as spring rolls and sausages. However, given you always get a table, its near to the office and you get a full three course meal with a drink- you can't really complain. They never pushed you to return the table by a certain time and I believe they also do this deal over the weekend with a lot more alcohol involved- please check the store for details. We went to it for drinks- Joe Bananas is pretty much an institution in the Wanchai area along with Delaneys , Meis Amis, Dusk till Dawn and a number of others. Its an expat orientated environment though locals could also thoroughly enjoy themselves over a few drinks and with the usual gaggle of girls standing just a bit too close to you for comfort. The band and everything else completes the Wanchai experience and of course if you are really keen they also have t-shirts available. Why would I rate it 5 star? While I'm used to the classic gin and tonic with a slice of lemon floating in the glass, it is by no means an aesthetic that I expect to see in one of the fancier bars (I mean at least stick a lemon WEDGE on the rim of the glass). While I understand that it is unreasonable to expect 5-star hotel bar aesthetics in a Wan Chai bar, they could do better... and maybe put more gin or just cut down on the tonic in my G&T. I was surprised by the limited selection of bar snacks (paid and otherwise), considering how nachos seemed to be the only option there that wasn't an entree or appetizer. Offering peanuts (even if they charged for them) would've been nice. Service was on par with other bars in the area, i.e. reasonably responsive, and friendly enough.

Hostile Management Ruined a Professional Group Event…read more We visited last night after calling ahead the day before and being explicitly told no booking was needed for a large group. Yet, when we arrived with 12 directors and professionals on a quiet Monday night, the restaurant was almost empty, and the manager immediately told us off for not booking. He talked down to me, avoided eye contact, and made us feel entirely insignificant.We tried to have a calm conversation and mentioned we were spending money on a two-hour social gathering, but he restricted us to sit in the corner and strictly ordered us not to mingle with his patrons. He flatly stated he didn't care about our money, only his 'regulars.' To make matters worse, they forgot one of our food orders, and some of the food we did receive was subpar. It's a shame because the floor staff were sweet and kind, but hospitality starts from the top. I have never felt more unwelcome and treated with such hostility at an establishment. Avoid this place! Wasn't in the mood to take a picture I'm afraid.

As to be expected, the bar serves a pretty standard range of beers, wines and spirits, which is no more or less than anywhere else in this area. However, it does come up trumps with the food. Look, it's not going to be the best gourmet cooking in the world, this is British pub food that we are talking about after all. It is mainly beige foods that have been baked or fried, but there is a very large selection of dishes that will make you pine for England's green and pleasant lands, including; proper steak and kidney pudding, fish and chips, bangers and mash, cottage pie, and a selection of true British delights like pasta and chicken parmigiana - ahem, err yeah! The meals a-la-carte will set you back about HKD150, but the portions are generous. For the best value, come here for lunch, where a main meal with soup or salad starter, will set you back around HKD70. Again, it's not the best you will have, but for a tasty quick bite, it is perfectly good. Be warned, with such a good value meal deal, the HK office workers come here in their droves, so you should book for lunch. My only gripe about this place is the serious lack of English speaking staff. Try asking for a lager shandy, and the spotty 12 year old kid will look at you blankly as though you have just ask for the secret to The Masons. Try and get the nice Filipino manageress to serve you. She at least knows the difference between the steak and kidney pudding , and the steak and kidney pie. Last note, they have quiz nights on Tuesdays, which are always a good laugh, and loads of sports on the TVs. They sometimes project games onto the wall of the neighbouring building.
