My husband and I did this for a date night and was had the best time. Neither of us had any experience with power tools, and are not particularly handy. There was the perfect balance of instruction and action. We learned enough about the machines and how to use them safely, and we had plenty of opportunity to actually get hands on work. My boyfriend and I did this for our date night and it was such a great experience! Baran and his wife were beyond helpful and friendly. The class size was small; 6 people. It was honestly the perfect size for hands on learning and teaching. We wish the parking lot had a sign with their name on it so we knew we were in the right place. We pulled out of the lot and drove around for 5 more minutes before pulling back into the lot lol. Definitely give yourself extra time to arrive and park when attending a class. The DIY joint is great for anyone that wants to learn about woodworking. I recently finished the live edge side table w/ bow ties and epoxy class with Priscilla. I've been wanting to build a custom desk top for a standing desk, so I decided to make a river table instead of a side table. In class we learned how to flatten a live edge wood with a router, and reinforce cracks with bow ties and epoxy. For an absolute beginner, building a table top from scratch was pretty intimidating but Priscilla was really encouraging and hands on throughout the entire process. Did a corporate group event with 9 people at the DIY Joint - it went above my expectations from the end to end process of planning to execution. Priscilla was great to deal with in planning the event (finding an appropriate date and time, giving various options on what to create, and answering any questions that our group had). Priscilla also clearly did a tremendous amount of preparation and planning so that when the 3 hour session started, we had clear step by step instructions that were easy to follow, and she was super helpful making sure we were going in the right direction. It was great to use the various tools (two different kinds of power saws, hand saws, sanders, etc) which we definitely don't get to use in our normal office day jobs. Overall - whole group had a lot of fun and we caught the bug - we'll be back to make more stuff!! read more

Booked a beginner's woodworking class here on a whim, since I've always had a deep admiration for the art form and desire to learn it. And I'm glad as hell I did. The space was huge, clean, modern, well-kept, and our instructor Priscilla was professional, patient, and super helpful with everyone in the class. She also never talked down to, rushed, or mothered our efforts: basically the best thing you could hope if you want to learn how to woodwork from a pro, but still feel like you actually made the thing yourself. Everybody else in the class was super friendly and helpful (something that was surely aided by the fact that we were free to BYOBooze for the class, also a huge ++++) and I was so glad I went, even though I went alone (there were others there alone too so this also was a non-issue). Also, I tested the serving tray we made the very next day at a Super Bowl party, and it didn't break into a million pieces, so I consider it a resounding success overall. Although I'll be sure to return for any future, slightly more advanced woodworking classes, I was so impressed with this one that I'm also going to check out the other, non-wood-related courses DIY posts because what we made and did was that dope and I had that much fun. I had such a great time during the 3 week Live Edge side table class! The class was perfect for a beginner (I've never used power tools before) but moved fast enough that I felt like I was constantly learning and making progress on my table. Priscilla was amazing to work with! I had some custom specifications that I wanted (including a larger table and shorter legs to turn it into a coffee table instead of a side table) that she worked with me to make work. I've never felt so empowered to take on a craft that was in the past so intimidating to me. I highly recommend this or any other class at the DIY Joint. Building things with your own two hands is an amazing experience. Learned how to use a saw, a drill press, power tools, clamps, and put together a tray with one piece of wood! I think the regular classes are a bit expensive, but perhaps that is how much it costs to do woodworking. If it was more affordable, I would definitely want to take more classes. read more

I have been looking for someone to teach me woodworking for years but never took it super seriously until now due to time and money constraints. Recently, I came across this place through an internet search and decided to give it a try - and am THRILLED that I did. I am just finishing my first class in furniture building and it is everything I had hoped for. The owner, Priscilla, is super friendly, competent, and a very organized business person. The fact that she is a (very) petite woman doing these amazing things gave me confidence that I could handle it as well. The class is a lot of fun; the table we are building is teaching us all kinds of techniques from using and caring for power tools to cutting, planing, joinery, gluing, and finishing. It is fast paced, so it's important to keep up, and it helps to have good basic math skills because we worked from a template and didn't have a chance to practice measuring on our own pieces. Personally, I feel that I will need to come in for extra time to practice and cement the information I've learned, but she offers reasonably-priced studio time to do just that. Everybody is friendly and it seems to be a helpful community of builders who come there to work on individual projects. Everything is laid out with safety and cleanliness in mind. The classes are a bit pricey, but you get a LOT for the money and it's very understandable when you see all the tools and machinery that has to be maintained. The location is comfortable to work in and secure, but there isn't much time for breaks, so I would recommend you bring water and snacks. I am so inspired and absolutely can't wait to start my next class! Priscilla and her team are filling a great need for those who want to work with their hands and create beautiful and practical wooden pieces. There is talk about offering more and different types of classes and I hope they end up becoming a reality. If you've ever wanted to try woodworking, but have been nervous or hesitant, don't let that hold you back! You will not regret it! read more

Love this place! I found The DIY Joint in Hoboken when I was looking for a beginner woodworking class to take. I called the shop to schedule it. I spoke with Priscilla, the owner, who answered all of my questions and had me signed up in just a few minutes. I arrived for the first class (1 of 5) on a Tuesday evening in August. Tons of parking is available right across the street in an inexpensive parking lot, usually hard to find in Hoboken, but it's also a short walk from the Train. Priscilla was also our instructor and she was great. She was friendly, attentive, and interesting. Over 6 weeks (She added a week at the end as we didn't finish in 5 weeks, at no extra cost- Nice!) She has a lot of experience and truly loves what she does. She walked us through the process of preparing the rough lumber, and milling it (cut off saw, jointer and planer.) Then she guided us as we used the table saw, mortiser, band saw, and sander. Then on to fit up, glue up and power and hand sanding. When we left (there were 5 in our class and it was just the right number of people) we were all very happy with our finished projects and felt that we had learned how to use several woodworking machines and had a great time! This is definitely an awesome resource for Hoboken and the New York City crowd. They offer everything from group classes, to Open Studio time, to one-on-one instruction. I can't wait to go back! We came to DIY Joint to celebrate my husband's birthday. Our group of 15 had an amazing time! We got a little taste of real woodworking. We got to use a variety of power tools to put together our wine racks. At the end everyone left feeling very satisfied and happy with something they had created. The space is very nice and open. Priscilla was great at introducing each of the stations we would be rotating through and she floated around to make sure all of us were safe and knew what we were doing. Preparation for the birthday party was seamless. Priscilla is very easy to work with. My husband picked a wine rack design from a Pinterest board, and Priscilla designed the project for us! Absolutely love this place and the owner, Priscilla! My first experience was back in September when I booked the cutting board class. Priscilla was the instructor and she was very clear in her teachings and the rules of the shop. She was professional, super helpful, and extremely patient with those of us in the class as we learned to use these high-powered tools. Upon completion of the course, you receive your certification for open studio. Since then, I've spent at least 5 hours a week at the shop working on my own personal projects. In fact, thanks to the DIY Joint and Priscilla, I'm working on opening my own Etsy shop now! (Sawdust and Roses -- come check it out!) The people attending open studio are like a little community. They're so friendly, willing to answer any quick questions you may have (although everyone generally works on their own), and it's nice to see the progress others are making on their projects, as well. Additionally, due to Priscilla's encouragement, I completed the hand tools utensil course this weekend, as well. It was a one-day course (9am-2pm) and Glen was the instructor. I must say, he is next-level talented. He makes it look so easy! It was exciting to learn something new about this new hobby that I love so much. That said, I strongly recommend the DIY Joint to any beginner wanting to take a woodworking class to familiarize yourself with the tools, or even a novice just looking for a space to create. My husband recently started dabbling in woodworking and I signed us both up for "plant stand" class. It was such a fun experience. Priscilla is so sweet, knowledgeable, and passionate about sharing her love of woodworking. Her shop is impeccably stocked with high end machines and tools. It is clean and crazy organized. She really has everything. And once you have completed a course you are eligible to use her studio for your own projects, which for a city dweller who doesn't have a garage is a unique opportunity. Sometimes I feel like getting artsy or hands-on with a project, despite knowing full well that I have no experience in any type of craft. But that rarely stops me from scouring the internet for something that might sound interesting, or might be something I can do...casually...based on my own ideas...with minimal commitment...but with direction from an instructor. Hmm. Can I find such a place? Well DIY Joint was just that. With the added bonus that classes were held in a bright and cheery space, with new equipment! I'm used to taking random art classes in NYC, where it was clear we were all using scraps and equipment few years passed its retirement date. I took a 3-week cutting board class, and despite not ever using or seeing wood working equipment, there I was using a table saw, jointer, planer (...impressed?) like a pro! The instructor thoughtfully explained how each tool worked, and why it was that we were using certain tools. She demonstrated each of the tools for newbies like myself and patiently answered all our questions. I love this place. I have taken the table and cutting board classes and they were great. Its a place you get to build cool things with real equipment. The owner is a perfectionist and when it comes to furniture this is important. There is room for your own creativity and inspiration when engaged in their classes such as shapes of the cutting boards, finishes, etc. I would recommend anyone to take a class with Priscilla or one of her instructors. You will learn a lot and best of all create something with your own hands. I think her shop brings huge value to Hoboken, NYC and Jersey City residents.
