I have been going to The Darskide for as long as I can remember. I remember it being "The Darkside and Tattooing" when my cousin Jerry worked there as an artist when they were on the east side of Pine across from Wendys (Now Roots Juice Bar). I lived on Gold Street right down the hill behind the old shop. I moved back to the area about a year ago and things have changed and two locations later theyre now on Hilltop right around the corner from my house... Again... We (The company I work for) just recently partnered with The Darkside to bring a Skate event to the North state and I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with Bruces professionalism and am proud to say that this is a place that I have shopped at for most of my adult life. Do I miss the old locations? Sure. The East side of Pine location was small, humble and cozy and I never felt unwelcome. When they took over the building after The Underground went Kaput everyone was excited to see what they would do with the space. Now on hilltop they have expanded into a skate shop as well. When I drive to work in the morning and pass by the Darkside and I see the Mural on the wall, I remember I'm Home. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped in on the way home from a road trip, looking for some cool boards and we were not disappointed! We had a really nice experience with the staff who helped us pick out boards/wheels/grip tape. Was a pretty cool place to look around while they put on the grip tape! Not sure what's up with all the one star reviews but maybe things have changed?? Might be worth another chance! read more

I went in for a defective item that was purchased 2 days prior. The owner refused replacement and is now claiming online that the whole thing never happened. It's been over a year before Bruce finally disputed my comments on his horrible little business. Not only does he lie he treats the customers terribly. Yelling, cursing etc. The guy has mental problems and moving his location isn't going to change his business practices. It's really wonderful that they tore down the eye sore place on the down town location. There are so many places selling the same merchandise at prices a lot cheaper. Poor location, hard to access. The store is cluttered and the staff are unknowledgeable. I haven't got a tattoo there but I've bought smoking items. Poor selection and the prices are a bit high. Wish they carried bubble bags and more vaporizers. Buddies of the staff tend to loiter in the store. I don't get a comfortable feeling when I come in. I try to run in and run out. read more

my fiance got a tat done there recently, the quality of the tat was good. Line work, art & colors I would give 4stars. He knew what he wanted going in & Mike drew it up quick and gave us an excellent price. The equipment was clean & sterile, however the shop look run down & dirty to me, very messy. I have no tattoos myself but went with the idea of also getting one. Once I saw the tattooist I changed my mind real quick, he was crude and shared stories of being hung over & mis-spelling someones tat recently. Another friend heard the same story from him w/ the addition that he told the consumers it wasn't a good day for him to do the tat in the first place but they wouldnt take no for answer. Also he took us as a walk-in knowing it overlapped into his next appointment making them wait and extra 30-45 minutes. But like I said the tattoo itself is very good work so if you dont mind the mess & lack of professionalism then it's worth the money you save to go there. read more

I have been going to the Darkside since 2005! Every single time i go in there i leave beyond satisfied. The customer service is absolutely incredible, prices are amazing and cheaper, and the staff is so helpful and knowledgeable! I would HIGHLY recommend this business to anyone in need of their products! These are the rudest people I've ever met. Never coming back here again. Zero help. I bought a beautiful pipe from them last year. It broke so I was hoping they might have it in stock again. There were 3 people at the counter, two men and a woman. I ask if they have this specific pipe in stock and described the very distinguishable design it had, hoping it might ring a bell. The woman repeats my design to the guy in what I assume was an attempt at whispering and laughed at me. She starts pointing at random pipes that don't fit the detailed, distinguishable description I'm giving her whatsoever and rolls her eyes when it's none of them. Like, I understand if they don't have it in stock anymore but it's not ridiculous to ask. And I also understand they're probably all stoned, but c'mon. Not giving them my business anymore. I'm going to Chico next time I need to buy a pipe. read more

I would recommend a midnight back alley tattoo in Tijuana instead if you are planning to have it done here, yep lots of glass but nothing different than what any smoke supply shop should carry. But if you are the type that would spend a down payment of a car on a "water pipe" then this is your spot, and don't bother asking advice from staff because they all seem to act like they have something better to do than customer service read more

TERRIBLE SERVICE, DO NOT SHOP HERE!!!!!!! I have shopped at Darkside for years, not because of the amazing service or the great prices, but simply because they have a larger selection than anyone in the area. However, I AM DONE! I recently purchased an ash catcher, I just pointed at the type i wanted and the employee behind the counter wrapped it up for me and bagged it for me. I unwrapped it when I got home only to find that it was cracked. I didn't drop it or hit it against anything and it was bubble wrapped so the only explanation is that the employee didn't notice the small crack when she grabbed it off the shelf. By this time the store was closed so I had to wait till the next day. I figured that I was in luck when I found the store owner was there. I explained to him my issue and he basically said "you out of luck unless you want to buy another one." He offered me a 10% discount on the second one which I was less than thrilled about. Our conversation ended with the owner yelling at me and calling me a liar to my face as I walked out the door. Great service guys, way to treat your loyal customers! read more

All the other reviewers must have this dark side mixed up with the one in Red Bluff or another head shop, because every time I come in here I have always been treated with a happy smile and everyone is super knowledgeable and happy to help me. And of course the pieces are expensive depending on what brand you get, that should be obvious. So the owner of this store has chosen to contact me about my negative review three years after I wrote it. I wonder if they chose to wait so long in the hopes that I would have forgotten the details of my experience. I have not and never will forget the rude introduction I got when trying to enter this store. I was sent a message that began with laughing at me and proceeded to imply that I was lying about my age and/or mistaken about what store I was in entirely. Came in to buy a few things walked into a store with two other customers and the workers seemed to preoccupied to answer some questions. He just started helping another customer then later came back and took the piece I was asking about and threw it on the ground behind him. Don't think I'll be going back after this visit... It kept getting worse and worse and now it just feels like a task to go and look around. If you don't care about making money or helping your customers then don't expect to have any... And commenting on the older reviews trying to discredit them is a joke you guys deserve one star or less get over it. read more

WOW So i just came here from Idaho with a friend and she told me about this head shop. I guess they just moved there location across the street. Huge, So many smoking items. I was in the for 45 min and i still didn't get to see all of it. Many diff things to choose from and the staff was great and helped with any questions. The prices are very descent some are high but the ones that are are awesome. I haven't got a piercing or tattoo but it's hard to find a shop that has titanium jewelery and at a good price on them so I'm going to have to get one done. read more

Given that it's Redding's only large head shop, it's hard to say too many bad things about this place. The quality of their product varies depending on the vendor and artist (at least with glass). They have a ton of product on display, so at the very least you have options. I think this place cleaned up a lot when they stopped running the tattoo and piercing side. The sales people vary with their helpfulness. I've had bad service here just as often as I've had good service. I think most of the problem, when there is a problem, is that the employees are just high and want to chill out instead of answer questions or talk about their product very much. Their prices are kind of high, but given their slight monopoly on the Redding market, this makes sense. They do have a 50% case, which is nice. I'm used to college town prices, so The Darkside is at least an improvement on that. I'm glad this place exists in this town, regardless of the bad service I get every now and again. read more

I recently received a very beautiful liquid filled pink sparkle pipe from here, After only hours of having it, I noticed a crack (very small) by the mouthpiece, The pink fluid was seeping out, and got in my mouth, twice, because I didn't Realize it was cracked. I put it in the bag it came with (bought seperately, cushony and thick) I took it back here LESS THAN 48 HRS after she bought it, and when I walked in and told the salesperson my problem, he looked at me like I was a liar on fire. And his exact words were, "I guarentee it wasn't leaking when it left here" well smart guy, it was in pristine condition, not even ONE full use, sorry guy, you sold CRAP, and don't even have the decency to TRY to keep a customer happy, did not offer a manager to speak with, just looked at me with that blank stare. If this is how they treat customers for the glass shop, I couldn't imagine ever getting a tattoo there that I would truely be stuck with for life. Poor service, bought a ash catcher, wasn't allowed to handle it until the employee wrapped and bagged it. Got it home and found a crack on the inside tube that didn't allow it to bubble correctly. Never used just water. Went back to exchange it and the owner told me no exchanges, refunds etc and to get out of his store. Don't ever go there. Not a way to do business. read more

I had a similar experience at Darkside. The owner is definitely slimy; wanting to pay me less then half of what I make at other venues, and charging an absurd amount for inferior glass that looked imported. People like that fail to realize the costs that go into producing a piece; oxygen, propane, glass tubing, and color rod...not to mention time and effort. All I can say is places and owners like this are a dying breed. They are being replaced by sustainable, cooperative businesses which are thriving. read more

Wow. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. Friends and I went in while they are doing their free piercing deal. words of advice: DONT DO IT. As soon as I saw the first victim, i mean..client, walk in the piercing room I knew it wasn't a good idea. The man had his music BLASTING and the girl held two packets of jewelry up to the window asking the people still in line which one she should get. Approximately 15 seconds later, yes. SECONDS. she came out pierced. My friend and I were next. The guy flung the back of the chair up and just said "sit". My brave friend went first. I could hardly watch as he took out all the tools and equipment with his bare hands. No gloves. Right before he pierced her ear he put some gloves on. With the needle sticking through my friends ear, he tried to get the jewelry in place. Then he dropped it. My friend, the piercer, and I all spent about a minute trying to fish the jewelry out of the cracks of the chair. Finally we got it, but he just put it in her ear without cleaning it. I understand it's free. But I could have done a better job piercing myself. Ridiculous. read more
