It was gone lickety-split, it was so good! Staff is super friendly, wait time reasonable for a busy place in a small town, no complaints here. The Dixie King is my favorite burger, it has a thick tasty beef patty with cheese, tartar sauce and special sauce! Love their crinkle cut French fries, onion rings and cheese sticks with marinara sauce! Their ranch is excellent for dipping their fries and perfectly cooked onion rings! We dropped by here after hiking for ice cream. I saw on their online menu (also on the menu in the store) that they had several different flavors. Of course! It's the Dairy Bar. I was looking forward to several of the flavors. Coconut Cream Pie was also on the menu. So it was going to be a hard decision for me. We sat down to order, and after asking the server about the flavors, he told me they only had vanilla and chocolate. Then I asked him about the Coconut Cream Pie. It's ice cream with coconut and some pie dough mixed in. Not what I wanted. So I ordered the chocolate soft serve. I thought he had made a mistake. It didn't look or taste like chocolate. My partner had a vanilla and chocolate twist, and I couldn't tell the difference in color or taste. They both tasted like vanilla. The place was nicely decorated and clean, and the staff was helpful. They need to change their menus. Maybe their other menu items are good, but we were looking for ice cream. read more

We were hiking in the area and stopped for ice cream. Service was great. We ordered hot fudge cake and an ice cream cone. The hot fudge cake took me back to my youth when shoneys still served good food and an excellent hot fudge cake - early 80s. Diner is decorated nicely and was clean. I suspect this is the only place open in town most of the time. I love the 1950's Elvis style Americana and tinny background music, but I wish the food was a bit more up to date. Service was friendly and helpful, explaining that one register was for take out and the other was for dine in. Locals eat here along with river tourists. Not expensive. Not great for dieting. I had their signature whopper bgr and while it was big that was as good as it gets! Meat was warm at best. Wife's was cold she said no heat at all. It was not that busy ahead of us! No excuse. I wanted onion rings but they were out!!! So I got onion pedals. They were fine but not hot either! Wife wanted corn nuggets but guess what? Out of those too! How do u screw up and run out of anything!!!! While it is a kinda cool Place to eat I do not recommend it as a go out of ur way place to eat. Nothing was outstanding even if it had been hot! Food was fun, diner like and good too. We did breakfast here. Biscuits were homemade and fresh. Bacon was cooked perfectly. French toast was yummy and plenty of cinnamon. Service was prompt and courteous. Bathrooms very clean. Ambiance great. Well restored piece of history. This is truly the diner from racist hell. Waited over an hour for our food. The food came out cold. We told our waiter about this and a female cook came out from the grill area and started yelling at us. She took my roast beef (Manhattan) and mashed potatoes to microwave it. A microwaved Manhattan tastes gross. My son's burger and fries were cold. They brought my sons burger back microwaved with a big thumb print on it. See pic. This woman was very racist in my opinion. The waiter was nice. The lady that checked us out apologized for the grill cooks behavior. She said the other employees have to put up with her all day. My opinion is to stay as far away from this restaurant as you can. Especially if you are a minority. This is a disabled veteran will never return. My wife was the only person of color in the restaurant. Others were served promptly. No one else was yelled at by the grill cook. Only us. read more

We ended the meal with a strawberry milkshake using real strawberries (although given the option to do syrup). A group of friends and I visited this area for the weekend and we stopped in for milkshakes and some food to go, but it took over 5 minutes for someone to even speak to us, despite making eye contact with several of the staff. No one smiled, no one was friendly, and no one was wearing a mask, even though there is a sign on the door saying masks required. We attempted to place an order and they made us feel that they didn't want our business, they told us things were broken and that said it would be 25 minutes plus before we would get our food and just overall pushed us out. We ended up not ordering food and we didn't attempt to order food at a later time given the general attitude of the staff. Sucks because as a group of 6 we probably would have dropped a good amount of money and would have tipped well for good service. Overall, if you're an outsider I wouldn't recommend going. read more

I love the Dairy Bar! My church takes trips to Kentucky every year and we'd go to the Dairy Bar multiple times each trip- it was a highlight for us- great memories! Everyone working there is very friendly and kind. They are able to handle large groups of people at once- they are capable and patient. There is seating inside and also seating outside. You can also drive up and they will serve you in your car- so cool! The ice cream is great and they have tons of choices. I remember some of my friends loved the banana shakes. My favorite was the triple berry sundaes- I don't know if they still have them but WOW- so delicious! They also have great diner food- burgers, fries, etc. I think they used to only take cash- no credit cards- so come prepared, just in case. This is a fun and popular place- enjoy! :) read more

Came here with my husband and mom to visit our family in the area. We walked into the restaurant and everyone was staring at us, perhaps because we were wearing masks to protect from COVID 19? We waited over an hour and only received one out of our three entrees, in which the waitress essentially threw on the table and walked away. At this point, we asked for the check. Luckily my in laws are driving their car because my husband has been so sick that we had to leave our motorcycle at the last hotel And ride with them because it's just not safe at this point to ride. Twice a year we go down to Whitley City Kentucky to work with the underprivileged people of McCreary County. McCreary County Kentucky is one of the top five poorest counties in the US. Once it was a booming coal mining region, but the coal mines have closed and the state has bought much of the land leaving it poverty stricken. Work in the area is minimal and many of the jobs are more than 40 miles away. This means that most of the paycheck would go toward gas just to get to and from work. Summertime brings work crews from all over the country to help out families with much needed construction on their houses, or trailers, or cabins, or whatever type of habitation they can afford. Often times we're installing windows, or repairing a front porch. Sometimes it's putting up siding or drywall. There is much need there and every little bit helps. We also go in December, bringing Christmas gifts to kids whose families can't afford to buy them themselves. Christmas gifts always include necessities such as clothing and shoes, but we don't forget that every kid loves to get a toy. Something they can play with. We then help host a Christmas party in one of the small communities (the Hills and Hollers are made up of small communities and not sprawling suburbs) where the gifts are distributed and everyone receives a hot meal and a chance to meet Santa Clause. We also take the opportunity to share the story about the birth of Jesus. We look forward to all of these events, but the one thing we can't wait for it going to the Dairy Bar for dinner. The Dairy Bar is an old school '50's diner that still has curbside service. On a busy night cars will be stacked 4 deep in their parking lot with waitresses bringing out good old fashioned greasy diner food and super thick milkshakes. We pack ourselves in their small dining room (being that we usually have more than 10 people on this trip) and look over the menu that we already know so well. "What can I get ya hon?" Everyone is "Hon" down there. Or sweetey, or dear, or honey... you get the idea. They really have a way of making you feel welcome. Some people go for the big dinners like the Manhattan, or fried shrimp. Some just get a milkshake. Did you know that they have 33 different flavors of milkshake? Everything from traditional chocolate to cotton candy. And if they don't have what you want, they'll try to make on for you. Legend has it that one of the summer team members ordered a dill pickle milkshake. They made it... and he drank it... one moment here while I block that out......... ok I'm good. But I always look forward to their signature burger. The Dixie Whopper. Let's just look at the picture above for a moment.............................. MAN that looks good! The Dixie Whopper uses 2 one third pounders (I think) that are cooked on a flattop grill giving them a great crust which is loaded with flavor from years of cooking on the grill. The patties are then put on a tripple split bun that is buttered and toasted on the same flattop. They then place shredded lettuce, raw onion, american cheese and a dill pickle (probably the same kind used in the milkshake). But what makes a Dixie Whopper a Dixie Whopper is the sauce. Tarter sauce. Yes that right, the same sauce you put on your fish sticks (unless you're 7 and you use ketchup). For the record it's a pretty mild tarter sauce, but it has much more flavor than plain mayo. The tarter sauce adds just a litte bit of zing to it that you don't get with mayo or ketchup. I guess it could be similar to thousand island dressing on a burger, but it has a much cleaner flavor. What I really found though was that the bun really made the burger. I know I've said that before, but a soggy bun can really ruin the burger experience. You know how when you make a perfect grilled cheese sandwich the bread is golden brown and has the perfect crunch? That's what this bun was like. The combination of the bun, and the fresh toppings so very well complimented the creaminess of the tarter sauce. So OK, I know. I'm blogging about a burger joint that is 9 hours away from home and most of you will never get to try it. But maybe it's a reason to go on one of the trips to help the poor of Kentucky. We went up to do a little kayaking and hiking. Asking the locals for a good place to eat is always a good idea and this place may have been the best idea yet. The decor is mostly 50s, but not quite there. But, seriously, who cares? That Dixie Whopper was the stuff dreams are made of and don't get me started on the onion rings. My hubby & I stopped here for dinner after visiting the old mining community, Blue Heron, in Big South Fork NRRA (a National Park property). We were looking for a restaurant that was interesting and privately owned instead of the usual big chains. For the record, we noticed that the area didn't have many chains, which speaks to the local income level and the amount of traffic. Just on a whim, hubby turned into Whitley and low and behold, we discovered The Dairy Bar. What a treat! The classic 50s diner menu was fun and especially interesting with many Southern offerings mixed in with more traditional diner fare. I had the best Coney dog ever. Who would think one could rave about a Coney dog?! The chili on the dog was super delicious. Additionally, there was a choice of chili - "regular or Cincinnati" - and when I didn't know the difference, our waitress brought two little bowls with a taste of each so that I could make an informed decision. I went for the "regular" chili with beans, but the all-meat Cincinnati chili was interesting with a touch of cinnamon flavoring. We didn't know what "corn nuggets" were, and when described, it sounded just like the corn fritters of our Iowa upbringing. Sure enough, the batter was the same, but they were fried in little globs - maybe 2 tsp or 1 Tbsp size - and were crispy and yummy. Hubby enjoyed the "Manhattan" sandwich. Yes, we had to ask about that item, too, and we learned that it was what we called a hot beef sandwich in the Midwest. It was predictable with one exception. Instead of dry slices of roast beef, the generous portion of meat was pulled chuck roast, moist and flavorful. Both waitresses were attentive to all the tables, even if not "their" customer. Our drinks were kept filled, and we were checked on periodically. Their warm charm, diligence, and efficiency definitely is unmatched in the big cities. Wow! The Dairy Bar even has curb service, which we discovered accidentally when we started up our truck after dinner, and sat there for a minute or two loading in the GPS information on the restaurant. Our truck has driving lights that come on automatically when the engine is started. Those "on" lights "called" the waitress to our truck! We apologized for our error, and left very happy with our serendipitous restaurant find. read more
