They're always happy to replenish my water and never make me feel guilty for not ordering a drink (yeah, I know, I'm lame). When my friend moved away from Appleton, we threw her a goodbye party here because this was always her favorite bar. The group of us took up all of the tables and the staff was very attentive to all of us. The bartenders even played jukebox music just for us. The locals were as friendly as usual and chatted with some of us. What I love about Jim's Place is that it's laid-back (though not as much as, say, The Nickel) and you can still easily have a conversation with someone instead of yelling over the music. Also, the way the bar is set up makes it pretty easy to chat with people you don't know, which I like. Fun fact: I hung out with my professor here once!

Apparently, the correct Wisconsin way is cheese curds, a soft pretzel, beer cheese, mustard, and craft beer. One of my host~family sisters and longtime friends brought me to Stone Arch Brewpub shortly after I touched down in Appleton, and this was exactly the kind of welcome~back I needed. Let's talk about those cheese curds. Pillowy. Soft. Tender. Ridiculously good. I don't say this lightly, but these may be some of the best cheese curds I've ever eaten. Then came the pretzel~super buttery and incredibly soft~with Wisconsin beer cheese and mustard for dipping. At that point, the reunion could have ended and I would've considered the trip successful. But we weren't done. We worked our way through an assortment of craft beers spanning Hazy IPAs, West Coast IPAs, Sours and Gose~style beers. The atmosphere was cool, the service was great, and the combination of food, beer and catching up with an old friend made this feel like the perfect beginning to my return to Appleton. Sometimes the best travel experiences aren't about finding the newest or trendiest place. I'm not doing multiples. Come on, I'm here now. I'm going to walk away. Get the money on the bar." We completely understand needing to keep orders organized and moving quickly during an event this busy. Had he simply said, "I need everything in one order and one payment, please," there would have been absolutely no issue. Instead, his tone was unnecessarily aggressive, impatient and disrespectful from the moment he approached us. We were ready to order, ready to pay, and weren't being difficult customers. There was simply no reason to speak to us that way. Busy or not, basic courtesy still matters. Unfortunately, it left a terrible impression of Old Town Tavern and put a damper on what should have been a fun Oktoberfest experience with friends.
