I priced four tailors in the area to hem pants, with Custom House at $22 while the other three were $18. I accidentally went to Custom House, and didn't realize I was at the wrong place until after the pants were pinned, so I gave it a shot. A week later, when I looked closely at their work, I realized I should have told them to rip out the stitches because they ruined the job on BOTH legs of the pants. Judging from other reviews, they can do good work, but the pictures should speak for themselves. I hope to write a better review for a different tailor. read more

I have been using the Custom House for fifteen years. It never occurred to me to "bargain" like I was in southeast Asia. However, I always ask what it will cost because the nature of clothing renovations is whether it's cheaper to replace or repair/remodel and the value is a personal consideration. I am a skilled and experienced seamstress myself and they have never returned any work that was not excellent. If they can't do it right they tell you. So is it worth paying $20 to hem a pair of $10 pants--yes, often it is. If the pants look like a million on you afterward then it's worth it. Similarly there' s no use paying $300 for a brand new pair of pants if they don't fit you and make the best of your figure. My daughter recently took in a dress we bought for about $13 for her sister. They couldn't make it fit her sister so we hung it in the closet. Unknown to me, my other daughter took the dress in and had it fitted to her and now has a lovely evening dress to wear. Whatever she paid for that remodel, I know it was less than the cost of a dress for the event. The trick is, if you don't want to spend the $13 to begin with, make sure you can return it if you take it there and decide it's not how much you want to spend. They have never not given me a price in advance. This is why we use Custom House. Because off the rack sizes never look right and no matter what we pay, they look Great when they are done. This tailor does great work - but i think you have to negotiate your price pretty early on in the process - which i don't have the energy to do. I first brought them a thrift-store fur coat that needed some patching up. OK, $50. the coat was nice and the work that needed to be done was complicated so it seemed fair. Got the coat back and the repair was undetectable and worth the money. Next, a skirt from target (Isaac Mizrahi) i got for $13.00. Hemming it - $20. weeeeelll. ...OK - it actually had a lining and a split up the back. I've worn the skirt since. Next, a jacket i got on sale - another $70 for alterations. I agreed before i knew what i was doing - now i had a pretty expensive jacket on my hands. Finally, another thrift-store fur - about $20 worth? She charged me $100!! to fix a rip comparable to the first coat i brought in. Felt kind of like a big sucker. Now i had a really expensive thrift coat. hmmmmm. Probably will explore other options for tailoring and leather/hide repair. Feel kinda dirty - like i was taken advantage of one time too many. BUT the work is excellent and they know what they are doing. Maybe your first time in you don't get charged as much. Good luck! read more

I have quite a different experience then the other posters, I had a terrible experience at the Custom House. They "fixed" a leather bag for me. After 4 month of use, their stitching started coming out. They came out to the point of the side-panel of the bag almost coming off. It was not only one isolated stitch, it was ALL of the stitches. I brought the bag back in to show them. The lady said "We can fix it again, for another $50" There was no offer to repair the bag at a discount, despite the poor stitching on their part. They hardly gave me the time of day, and there where no other customers. Any quality company would offer to fix the bag at no charge or a minimal charge. I would NOT recommend them! Their work was poor quality, expensive hacking with an attitude. Sorry for the bad review, but I feel it's your fault for not taking care of dedicated customers. Your attitude was arrogant and non-caring. Generally we don't do business like that in America. read more

Last winter I found a great deal on a leather jacket. It quickly became a favorite. After only a few wears, two pieces of trim ripped from the back. I was convinced it was ruined. I have a great tailor on S. Colorado, but they were just too snippy & I kept feeling like I was getting ripped off, even after I gave them HUNDREDS of dollars. Thus the move to C.H. They are a very quirky couple with a think accent of an unknown nationality. The place is certainly not the fanciest place around, but the work is extraordinary. Always on the spot & flawless. I have not bargained as of yet... maybe I will in the future. The prices weren't the best, but also not the worst. I enjoy the attitude and hard work of the couple so much that I can't imagine not being a fan for years to come. read more

My mother referred me to Custom House as she'd been going there for years. Their work is excellent and their prices very reasonable. I've had new pockets put in corduroy pants. I've had leather jackets's sleeves shortened. I've had a fur coat restripped and it looks new. I've had mixed results here. Friendly staff and nice work on hemming slacks, even had the sleeves on a ski jacket done well. I haven't been pleased with their alterations to blazers. The last blazer alteration, they did not move the buttons up the sleeve so one was hanging over the edge of the cuff. When I asked why she insisted that was the best she could do. read more

I've been using CH for years. Yes, they're a little pricey, but the work is amazing. I have a daughter who dances and we frequently need alterations to costumes. Despite the fact that costumes are often very poorly made with less than optimum materials, they always manage to make them look great. I've also taken in very expensive evening wear and been very happy with the results. From jeans to ball gowns, they're the best. And they're lovely people too. read more

They are simply the best I have ever seen. I have had some very high end items that were delicate and difficult to mend and they altered or repaired the items beautifully. One black silk full length skirt was hand hemmed for me by the Custom House. The job was exquisite. I have been using them for at least 15 years or longer. They are honest and efficient and I have had exceptional work from them! I will not go elsewhere ever and recommend them highly. I do not bargain since the prices are fair. I took a few simple jobs here and was overcharged, but the work was adequate, and it's close to where I live; then I took in a beautiful/expensive pair of dress pants to be altered, they needed to have the drawstring waistline removed, material (several inches( removed from the top of the pants (all the exquisite soutache and rhinestone detailing was at the bottom of the legs), and a whole new waistline needed to be created; it could have been a very expensive job; and it was...$60.00 later I tried the pants on much later and could not wear them. All Luba had done was to hike up the lining, not shorten the pants one fraction of an inch, and created a seam to hold the lining up, thus creating a waistline that was at least double any reasonable thickness and totally uncomfortable to wear. When I took them back to say "what's up with this", she and her husband (what?) got very defensive and tried to explain that this was the only "fix" possible -- a dishonest statement and a refusal to reimburse me for money thrown away on a pretense of an alteration. I was broken hearted...and am still looking for a real seamstress to help me come up with a pair of pants I can actually wear. Something tells me I'll probably end up doing this at home, by hand,as it's hard to find a decent tailor anymore ; I feel completely ripped off and mistreated by this couple and Luba's lack of vision and skill. Don't go there unless it's something really rudimentary; there's no ethics behind this business. read more

I used the Custom House back in the late 90's/early 2000's. They do great work. They remade the waist of some expensive Ralph Lauren pants and the pants fit great. Took a couple linen shirts from Walmart (these were actually some very nice shirts). Paid around $15 apiece for the shirts, then had the length shortened by a couple of inches. Custom House did a great job on these, too. I am very particular and also sew myself, but don't have the patience any longer. Today will take some cropped jeans from Talbot's to have side elastic put in the waist as waist is way too big. I know they will do a good job, or suggest another way to make them fit me. I expect to pay for my alterations. People who expect to pay only a couple of dollars for a hem or an alteration are being very unrealistic, in my opinion. Remember: you get what you pay for. I am sure you could find someone to do a hem for $2.00...but chances are you wouldn't be happy with the workmanship or how it fit you. read more

The lady at the C.H. does good work, but is too high priced in my opinion. I had an unlined soft (light-weight) suede jacket taken in on the sides and was charged about $45.00. This is 2 straight seams. No lining. I would probably not use this service again due to the high price. read more

Some things have been simple, and some have been more complicated, but all the work I've gotten back has been excellent and on time. I was in a big pinch last Saturday and Custom House really came through for me. I ordered an evening gown online from Nordstrom and like a dummy, I didn't try it on immediately when it arrived. I set out everything I needed for my event, and when I took the gown out of the garment bag, I realized it was never going to fit, just by looking at it. I tried it on and it almost brought me to tears, WAY TOO BIG. I panicked because the majority of my wardrobe was still on our moving truck en route to Denver. Just moving from the West Coast, I didn't know where to begin looking for a tailor. I called my only local friend and asked where she has her garments altered. When she suggested Custom House, she was just a little too excited about how amazing they were. I didn't have time to be a scenic so I took her advance and headed straight there. I dropped my gown off at 10:45am, and they had it ready by 3:00pm! They were fast (duh), friendly and surprisingly affordable, especially since my carelessness could have cost me an arm and a leg. I would recommend Custom House to any and every one. I true value and clearly, masters of their craft.
