They know not only their regular customers, but they also understand their community, and their products. Their First Editions Club is incredible. You can tell how much time and effort and CARE goes in to the book choice. Not only do you get a book mailed to you every month, but it's also signed by the author. Not only is it signed, but it's also covered in Mylar dust jackets, protecting the book for years to come. I can understand signing up to get a signed book by an author, but the Odyssey makes it so much more. They're not just sending a random book to you, they are carefully selecting books that they believe recognition, and many times, those selected titles go on and win awards! Now you have a signed first edition copy of a book by a hot new author -- and maybe you met the author at the store during their talk! The Odyssey's attention to detail just blows me away. You don't get that at other stores. I could LIVE at The Odyssey with all of the events they have... There is always, ALWAYS something going on for all age groups, whether it's monthly Young Adult Author panels, book clubs for different genres, or crafts for the kids, you will never be bored. Creativity abounds at The Odyssey. They also have events off-site, at local libraries, schools and colleges. I have never seen another book store reach out to the community like The Odyssey. If I had to choose one word to describe this fabulous place, I couldn't think of a better word than LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. Continue to support local book stores - visit The Odyssey!

Can I just tell you how SUPER PSYCHED I am that a) this…read morebookstore is actually still open (when you drive by, it often looks like it's closed) b) it's just down the street from my house c) they have an absolute TON of books Upon first glance, Redbrick (one word) looks like a relic of times past. The red brick industrial building has it's own parking lot, which is a bit of a kamikaze move to get into. Once inside, you're surrounded on all fronts by books upon books upon books. A treasure trove of literature! The books are grouped into general sections: children's, self-help, religion, cookbooks, fiction, classics, romance, etc. The distinctions between these groups aren't as clear as they could be, so this bookstore is more for the patient, the ones who get great joy out of finding a really cool classic or a collection of stories from their childhood. It will take awhile to peruse the whole store, but I guarantee you'll find some winners in there. Most of the books (paperback, hardback) and magazines are from decades past. I saw few "newer" books on the shelves interspersed. Some of the books, particularly the children's books and those by the windows, have had their covers sun-bleached. I, for one, love the classics and enjoy collecting antique books and quite enjoyed myself here. Many of their older books (away from the windows) have aged very well. I purchased two of Hemingway's novels, another smaller antique book, and a fictional hardback from the 70s, with a very "period" cover. We spent the better part of an hour in there, enjoying the opportunity to browse! Check out is toward the front, where a husband and wife team sit and chat, read, or browse the web. Being in business for 34 years (!), you know they really have a true love for literature and I really hope they have no intention of closing down. Their prices are pretty affordable: the four books (2 classics, 1 antique, and 1 retro) came to about $14. And, as a note, they do accept debit cards for purchases over $10. A sign spattered about the store claims that most books are 50% off, unless written otherwise inside the cover. If you're a bibliophile, an avid reader, a book collector, an imaginative mind, you'll absolutely love stepping back in time at Redbrick. I highly recommend this as a "cool" place to spend a little time and a little cash.

The SF/Fantasy section was…read morefairly diminutive, only took me a short time to scan everything and realize there was nothing I was interested in purchasing. Didn't see anything else interesting, but as another Yelper stated, the Romance section was pretty extensive. On a side note, they had the music cranked up REALLY loud. Decent tunes, but I still found it a bit annoying. Jumped back in the vehicle and Hit the road again !

However after finding this little gem of a bookstore I can now say I order from Broadside! The shipping is more than reasonable and the selection is as all encompassing as I see online. The staff is tenured and reliable, one of the staff "Brenna" keeps a running log of what I read and like and when they have three or four they go ahead and charge my card and ship them out. It is so delightful to find a package of books waiting for me when I get home, I just dive right in. Thanks Broadside, Brenna and the rest of the fabulous crew for making reading even more fun.

Along a country road in the heart of the Pioneer Valley in rural western Massachusetts there are…read moretwo used bookstores across the street from one another. One is in a house and the other, Heritage Books, resides in a former turn of the century brick library. As many times as I've driven by Heritage on Rt 10 just a few miles south of bohemian Northampton, it never seemed to be open. This past Sunday it was and I stopped in for my first look-see. Nice. Lots of interesting volumes on just about everything are neatly stacked and fairly priced. They have a strong fiction and history section and I couldn't help myself and bought a book about exploring Alaska written about twenty years ago after the first couple of paragraphs grabbed my attention. This is one of those uniquely New England used bookstores - always good for a surprising find at a reasonable price. And if you don't like the price, you can always bargain. Will I be back to Heritage? Absolutely!

Downstairs you'll find the vintage paperbacks at $3 each and upstairs the vintage pulp novels are individually wrapped and priced. They also have vintage posters, issues of Harper's from the 1800s, and a good number of vintage sci-fi books. The mass market paperbacks were cheap ($1) but in poor condition. I'd rather pay a few dollars more and get ones in fair to good condition. If you don't mine driving north to Hadley, you'll find the best bookstore in the area. As soon as I walked in, the woman behind the counter directed to me to "the mask basket". Can't recall the last time I was asked to put on a mask, but I complied. Or perhaps authoritarian viewpoint ? Not sure which it was, but I was the only person in the shop at the time. After I was shown the SF/Fantasy section, I found a paperback right away from one of my favorite authors. 2 bucks, made putting up with the mask nonsense worth it.
