Another amazing dinner at The Curry Queen last night. I have a hard time remembering all the names, but we had an appetizer of vegetables fried in chick pea coating (Podolak?). It was sumptuous and delicious. For dinner, we had the garlic nan, which is always great, Vindaloo with shrimp, and Chettinad with Chicken. All amazing. The food is always freshly prepared, quiet, comfortable ambience, and excellent service. The owner/Cook, Nalini, pours her heart and soul into her grandmother's traditional recipes that have been passed down to her. A wonderful. Interesting person as well. Some history: I have eaten at probably 3 Indian restaurants in my life before discovering The Curry Queen. None of them caught my interest - I just didn't get it. But I like Thai curry, so we stumbled into the Curry Queen several years ago. OMG, the combination of spices is so interesting and tasty, the meat is lean, the menu is broad and varied, and vegetarian dishes are endless and delicious (I'm not vegetarian). It is a consistently wonderful experience. Shocking to find this in Old Saybrook. CT! The closest thing I've found to this level is an Indian restaurant in Northern Wales two years ago. This is one of our favorite places for Indian food in the area. The woman who owns it and does much of the cooking always makes a point to come out and see how everything is. We've never had to ask for anything to be fixed - but I expect she would want to do everything possible for you to enjoy the food. By far hers the best roti I've had around here. The is very good. We have there twice and can recommend the samosas and the cauliflower appetizers. They were delicious. So was lamb curry. The eggplant was to me bland. There so many other things to try on large menu. We found the service to be fine. It is located in an inconspicuous mall in Old Saybrook. The restaurant has no ambience. Have a Taj Mahal beer. My first time here. I ordered take out. Lamb curry with naan and vegetable samosas. The food was delicious. The servings were very generous with big chunks of melt in your mouth lamb. The naan was the best I ever had. Soft and fresh, fresh, fresh. The dough is obviously made daily. I have since had the aloo paratha and padhi chaat. Delicious. Don't let the prices deter you. We came here for a quick dinner. The spot is hidden away next to a strip mall, wouldn't find it unless you are looking for it. The place is clean and has plenty of seating inside. They have a takeout window directly outside so you don't have to come into the main dining room to get your order. We ordered a few dishes to share. Things were not off to a good start with the small plates. Gobi Manchurian - it was super heavy on the sauce and didn't taste like it was made fresh Chicken 65 - description claims "hot & spicy", there was none of that in this dish, a bit disappointing. Vegeterian samosas - these were good Main dishes - this is where the dinner made up for the shortcommings of the apps Lamb Korma: Very tasty and the lamb was done nicely Tandori Chicken: nicely cooked chicken and flavorful Garlic naan: nice and warm Overall - I would give this place another try, but I'll def. skip the small plates since they did not seem to be fresh and the flavors werent there. read more

We didn't eat here. We chose our food, then I went to use the restroom. There was not soap in either. No soap just below the signs that said "Employees Must Wash Hands." Wash hands with what? I told the waiter and we left. Didn't want to take a chance. It was 3pm. read more

My wife and I have a favorite Indian food restaurant along the shore that we frequent. However, I enjoy trying out new or different places. When we noted that The Curry Queen had opened in Old Saybrook, we wanted to give it a try. We went on a cold Saturday night. Immediately upon entering, we were greater with a blazing fireplace making us feel welcome and right at home. The dining room was about half full of other diners. We noticed that the takeout area was accessed via a different door which is great,no cold air rushing in each time someone came to grab an order. We were seated quickly and settled in to check out the menu. There is currently no liquor service but you are welcome to byob without corkage fee. The owner did inform us that they will shortly be serving beer and wine. The menu is not nearly as extensive as we are used to but had a good selection of apps,mains,sides etc both with and without meat. We started with an order of Gobi Manchurian and chicken 65. Both were prepared in a different style then were are used to. The cauliflower was light,crispy and not covered in a thick sauce. We found it delightful. The chicken 65 was also not in a sauce but equally delicious. The only complaint was that neither had the heat level we are used to but more on that after. For dinner I had the chicken Rogan Josh and my wife had the Prawns Makhni, both were prepared expertly. I can't believe I am saying this but both dishes were light,not heavy as we are used to. You could taste all the spices . Like the apps, neither dish was spicy. There was plenty to eat with leftovers to take home. As we were finishing up, the owner herself stopped by. She made sure we enjoyed our dinner, told us about the upcoming liquor service and to invite us to try the south Indian buffet put out on Sunday afternoons. We asked about upping the heat level on our dishes next time and were happy to note that they are more then willing to accommodate. We will definitely be back to try some other dishes. read more

We've sampled the chicken tikka masala, paneer tikka masala, lamb vindaloo (INCREDIBLE if you like vinegar and palatable heat), garlic naan, and lemon rice (so flavorful) and everything has been top notch. I've been hearing so many great things about this pace, and I finally made it there today accompaniedby my cousin. In a nutshell, our expectations were wonderfully exceeded. We were expecting more of a takeout environment, but the immaculate dining room was more akin to fine dining with its linen napkins and table settings. The staff was not just friendly but outwardly appreciative of our patronage. The dine-in area looks very pleasant and inviting with a fireplace. They just need to fix their takeout container issue: plastic container lids split and cracked on the way home on two separate occasions making a mess, maybe because of the heat and stacking on top of one another. Visited Curry Queen for the first time last night. Chicken Kirma was good but the garlic Naan was dry and hard, almost seemed to be a day or two old. We ordered beer with our mean (no drink menu) only to find out beers were $10 each when we received our bill which is way overpriced. read more

I've been very happy with the Curry Queen and its saved me from traveling to Branford or Guilford from Westbrook to get good Indian food. I've only tried a few dishes, but what I've had has been very good. The chicken Korma was excellent and they were happy to give me extra Korma sauce as requested. The Aloo Paratha stuffed bread was also excellent. I like a thicker layer of the potatoes in the bread which is how they make it. Their cauliflower dish was also very good. This gem of a restaurant was recommended to me by a good friend. I went a few weeks ago and I go back whenever I am in the area. The best Indian food I have ever tasted! The chicken Tikka masala was fabulous and the samosas I had for an appetizer were just what I was craving. The food is delicious and the owner is very warm and welcoming!
