I would give ten stars if I could. I never knew my hair would actually curl. I had what my Mother just described as "stringy" hair that would frizz to 2x its normal size with any precipitation. I have lived in buns most of my life. (I do work in a place that calls for contained hair.) Working from home for 1.5 years during the pandemic I left my hair down more. I noticed that it waved. I wondered if I saw a curl specialist if the person could get it to curl. I'd settle for "not frizzy." I also live with someone compromised, so I have been very cautious about indoor settings. I hadn't had a cut in 4 years ... I actually read and followed the directions of walking in with a wash and go - no bun, no hat. The stylists need to see your baseline. I looked like Medusa. I was a little mortified. And I had actually tried to tame it a little with curl cream. Toriah was so patient and kind. She did not judge at all. Taylor was also working on another client, and they both educated both of us (me moreso as a completely clueless curl novice) for 2 hours. I could tell Toriah was not only knowledgeable but also really interested in her craft. She said "I can't wait to see what your hair does!" I was SHOCKED by what she was able to get it to do. With a treatment, the right products, and the right drying technique, I had curls. Full curls. Not just waves. Curls. SHOCKED. Toriah is a wizard. She also made me a detailed list of products so I could replicate the look at home. And they weren't just the most expensive stuff. (I've researched.) They were the right balance for my hair. FINALLY. Found a place that specializes in curly/kinky hair. I've been watching YouTube "tutorials" and plucking every product, yet seemed like my hair was always dry as a desert and breaking. I went to the Curl Bar a few days ago for my first ever dry curly cut, and let me tell you, it is worth every penny (and more). I had the New Client Cut package with Toriah and added Olaplex per Toriah's recommendation. The salon itself is clean, welcoming, and has fantastic vibes -- I really love the pink neon "The Curl Bar" sign. Toriah didn't touch my hair until about 10-15min into the appointment -- she took her time to listen to me about my routine, my concerns, and my habits. Not once did she tell me I was doing something wrong, even though we both knew I was doing whatever Instagram curly influencers told me to do. She then cut my hair, led me to the sink, and explained everything she was doing and why it mattered. Toriah answered all of my questions and guided me through an efficient styling routine to maximize definition and minimize frizz (my concerns). It's Monday today, I had my hair done Saturday, and I'm still frizz free. Bye bye, Instagram recommendations; hello, amazing hair. For anyone looking to go to the Curl Bar, I have a few suggestions to ensure you have the best experience: 1.) read the website, thoroughly. I had a great experience with Taylor - it was my first time ever getting a curly cut and also my first time in a curly hair salon. I felt like my concerns were being listened to and I learned a lot throughout the whole process. She made sure that I was okay with the amount of hair she cut and reassured me that I didn't have to cut more than I was comfortable with. Taylor taught me what my current products could be doing to my hair and how to continue to detox at home. I felt called to leave this review tonight because I am truly just in awe of my hair right now. It is amazing what receiving quality informed curly hair education can do for you!! I learned so many simple changes that drastically improved the health of my hair (because I finally connected with an actual curl specialist). My curls have never been more defined/soft/hydrated than after my first appointment and following the regimen that Toriah gave me. Most importantly, I am excited by how in love I am with my curls now. I suddenly love my day 1 hair every time, and wash day is no longer a burden or a chore. I hadn't gotten a haircut in years after some bad experiences, and am so glad to have finally found The Curl Bar. This new place is everything a curly salon needs to be and more: thorough hair education throughout the process including a card with products used and how much to apply on each wash day at home; a Black-owned business; really listening to clients and coming up with the best cut and style on that basis; a pleasant environment where people treat each other with respect; cutting-edge techniques (including more than one type of haircut, really!), machines (a hair mister!), and products (such as a gel that is moisturizing enough to be the first layer!). Toriah's expertise- combined with her actually listening to my hair goals- made me trust her enough to ask for something I'd never dared to try with my hair, and to change the routine I'd built up over many years (which had been building up on my hair shaft!). A session here is worth the wait and every penny spent, and could even save time and money in the long run due to the hair maintenance advice. You have to book right away on the monthly Sunday when new appointments open up, and they go quickly, so put that booking date on your calendar a month or so before you'll need a haircut.
