It's loud, busy but does serve good food. This is not the biggest pub but it is cosy. Tables are usually at a premium as it is cosy! We managed to get a table and then keep it longer than we were meant to. Kudos to the staff on this aspect. They have a space downstairs at the back you can hire out if you are looking for a venue for food, drink and a little more. The problem is it's in Croydon and parking is 24/7 in this area so anyone who's travelling don't drive! That said Croydon has really good rail and bus links, so go with that perhaps. Came here for a quick drink after wandering around Shoreditch for the afternoon. The bartender was nice enough to make us improvised Pimm's Cups after we told him we wer craving then. We stuffed our faces with a big bowl of Sage and Salt fries- they were thin and crispy and we down to the very last fry! The bar started to get crowded once everyone started to get off work. What a super fun place to enter.... It is full packed and the people are smiling, laughing and obviously out for a fun night out. We were there with our daughter, who was turning 18 that night and was being served her very first beer in a public serving place. She loved it, but we had to leave after the second beer, as she began to get a bit rowdy. ;o) There was not one person who battet an eye. I loved the back garden where people could smoke and drink in the cosy and warm surroundings provided in the form of lots of tables and terrace warmers. Brilliant. The music was loud and 70', 80' and 90'. Just my cup of tea. We are coming back to this place the next time we visit London....With no youngsters in tow. read more

Why did I get to this place at first? Because of the sign "we have a bloody lovely garden". Really?! Let's take a look then!! When I get in, I just wanted to cry: this is a BLOODY LOVELY garden!!! If you are a smoker, this will easily become YOUR place of choice! Just get in, have a beer, go outside and sit outside under the heating lamps (Yes, it's full of heating lamps, I spent three hours in January seated outside in January with just a t-shirt! Ah and I'm italian!!)!! In the garden there's also a food truck with some nice burgers, there is no reason at all for going inside! Beers are just OK. As Chris mentioned, look at the whole counter before ordering, as the beer-dispensers (come on, the thingy for draft beer, I don't know how to call it!) are not symmetric and you'll lose two or three options if you are just stopping at the entrance. But that's not the place you go for having top-quality beer, the reason you're coming here is the bloody lovely garden! Of course, it's Shoreditch: that means that the three tables around us were, in order: a table with middle aged italian business men and russian young girls, a group of heavy metal fans and a group of strange (well.... even stranger than usual!) people dressed as they just came back from wolf hunting. If you don't like this, I don't even wanna know you!! In conclusion, this is the perfect place where to have an after-work beer, but DO NOT expect to find great beers, as that's not the point. The garden is the point, in a city where finding a place with an inside smoking room is basically impossible, a place like this come as fresh air (well........ let's say a smoking fresh air!!) for us poor smokers left in the world!! read more

I've been going here for casual drinks and great food for a couple years now, but I'm inclined to write a review today thanks to the great customer service I received recently. Yesterday, after enjoying a couple pints after lunch for my birthday, I happened to leave my purse (with my wallet) hanging on my chair. Not until I got home around 5 pm did I notice I had left it. After calling and leaving a message with the pub (they get VERY busy in the evenings, so no answer was expected), I resolved to go back in the morning to look, as I was busy all night. Not to worry, just a few minutes after they opened this morning I received a call from Natalie, who had gotten my message and did have my purse in their office. A quick trip to Shoreditch later, I had my purse in hand and my birthday debacle was solved. Thanks to everyone at the Crown and Shuttle for your continued great service! This is a former strip club who has loads (and I mean LOADS) of craft beers. Even two kinds of German "Rothaus" beers - reminded me of my hometown Stuttgart yay! The garden is also pretty special and definitely a highlight of this pub: huge and lovely with a roofed and unroofed seating area and a food truck where chefs prepare food in their wooden-burning oven. If you rather want to have a private conversation than mingeling with others in the garden or at the bar, you can sit down at one of the tables who are fairly apart from each other and chat. read more

As bars go, this one was alright! Fairy spacious inside with a couple if bars. One at the front and one further back. We went to the back bar, where we were able to stand and have a drink in a group without being pushed around too much. Further back there is a smoking area which looked nice and probably in high demand when the weather is good. Bar staff were friendly and served quickly. Also our table was cleared off glasses at a reasonable pace. Only down side on this bar at the moment is that it is going through some refurbishment and therefore, the ladies toilets were not working and replaced with half a dozen porta loos. Not good :( Other than that? I'd be back. Just shout when the ladies are fit for ladies please. read more

This place is great for after work drinks, as long as you're not allergic to the banker crowd that seem to hit this place like flies. The venue has a GIANT beer garden in the back, along with a FOOD VAN. Yet, it still gets so packed during warm evenings that it's difficult to even move! This said, they do brooklyn lager here, so it's automaticallya good venue. Bouncers are around the venue at various points and super helpful. I'd lost my fitbit pedometer during some leaving drinks, and after a search around my vacinity at around 10pm with an iphone and bicycle flashlight, one asked me what I was looking for. I vaguely described it, and it seemed instantly that he knew what it was. He went into the bar, and 20 seconds later, I was holding my fitbit that presumably somebody had handed in! I couldn't believe it, not just because the place was rammed, and nobody would have been able to spot anything on the floor, let alone pick it up, there was not a single sign of any scuffs or damage either! Miracle? Anyway, I just had to mention the awesome bouncer who accepted my thanks as him "only doing his job". And the excellent brooklyn larger which is plentiful along with quite a good beer selection. No Chambord though when we wanted to do some Jam Doughnuts! :( Anywhere first impressions count and all this has encouraged me to try the food sometime, which I reckon will impress. read more

Extremely popular as an after work meet-up & drink spot for those working on Bishopsgate & Broadgate. It's really the only place around with anything like a decent outdoor area! As such it does get very busy and crowded, especially in nice weather. Expect it to be rammed by 6pm on a Tuesday, if it's a sunny evening. Non-work days, it still gets a brisk trade in hipsters over-spilling from Shoreditch, also looking some fresh air with their beer. The bar staff are generally pretty efficient, and friendly, and try there best to cope with demand (but expect to queue at the bar); the outside bar is a good bet if it's open. I've only eaten BBQ food - it is what it is, perfectly acceptable and does the job! read more

Crown and Shuttle has great food and a great atmosphere, and as a result gets crazy busy on the weekends, especially once they close the outdoor area. The bar staff manage to keep up with the crowds pretty well though! You can also reserve sections for groups if you don't want to be jostled all night long. If you visit in the summer the beergarden is a great place to have lunch or just waste an afternoon. read more

Been here quite a few times and just realised I've never written a review for it! Their beer garden out in the back is huge. In addition it's pretty well covered to protect you from the elements plus heaters to keep you warmish in the winter. Upstairs you have a hidden gin bar hosted by Langley's Gin and downstairs you have two big bars serving up a bunch of different beers including a decent number of craft beers. Definitely one of my favourite places to grab a drink! But watch out, this place gets busy! read more

This has actually become one of my favourite boozers in Shoreditch and is a really great choice for casual drinks or getting a group together. It has a huge space out back serving burgers from their very own van. Perfect for summer and with heaters in winter. We all rocked up here for cocktails and fun times on a Saturday night. We had managed to secure an upstairs spot in the smaller, more laid back bar and ended up totally taking over with the bartender playing our song requests on his iPod speakers. We ordered up a round of burgers and parmesan fries delivered to our table. Pretty decent food and impressively quick service for a Saturday night. A wonderful regeneration of a pub derelict for 10+ years. It boasts a large outdoor space (see attached photo) , much needed in this area. Pint prices are a bit on the high side , £4.50, but I suppose that isn't surprising being so close to the City. Staff are very friendly. I recommend the Bloody Mary fries (see photo) for treating hangovers. read more

If you are a beer lover make sure you stroll to the back before placing you order as there are a couple more beers there to add to your choice. Having missed this trick I was initially feeling a little disappointed with my Trumans Runner until I discovered how nice it is. I've had it before but this was by far and away the nicest pint of it that I have had! Trumans Lazarus and multiple Thornbridges were also available. Inside is nice enough but the large collection of random furniture outside (also known as a 'beer garden') is a serious asset, more than doubling capacity in the summer! They have an outdooor kitchen back there serving food to drinkers. read more

One of my bredrins (OK, he's actually my cousin) works pretty much next door to this, so as his local I met him there a few weeks ago for a well "needed" beer or seven. They have a beer garden which is good and the staff are relatively prompt with service. A great selection of beers, and even though I am not as much of an aficionado as my cuz, we were managed to sample a load of craft beers before staggering out later. Add in the friendly bouncer and, well the beer garden again, because it's wonderful in the summer and you have a rather sensational evening :) I will probably come back here very soon :) read more

This is my favorite pub in Shoreditch. My friends and I would meet up in the garden and have lovely late afternoon drinks. The service is always good though the place is packed and it can be difficult to get a table. Due to its location a lot of Banker types tend to flock here. Just ignore them and enjoy the beer. The food is pretty good and you get your meals from the food truck in the beer garden. Awesome. Just awesome. read more

This is one of my favourite pubs in Shoreditch. It was a fantastic selection of craft beers, pretty good food and an awesome beer garden. When it opened last summer, I would have easily awarded it 5 stars. The problem is, it's now a victim of its own success. It's often really busy and difficult to get a table, especially in the garden after work, even if you get there early. This wouldn't be so bad, but now the crowd who are filling the place at peak times aren't the local Shoreditch lot, but rather the people who come into the area who see it as the new west end. It seems a bit unfair to downrate a place for being popular, but I just don't really like going there anymore, except at off peak times. read more

Hmmmmm. Have been here a few times and aside from the ants (everywhere- on the bar, on the tables!) I liked it.. The garden is especially lovely and they do food with a great selection. Went there on Saturday with a few friends and I was eager to show them this amazing new bar. We were lucky enough to get outside seating. When it was my turn to go to the bar, and squishing ants while I waited to call a drink, I ordered two bottles of wine (there were a lot of us!). The barmaid took the top off both so I asked could I have one of the screw tops and she rolled her eyes and almost threw the PDQ (card) machine at me. Then she went on to giggle that she had forgotten where she put it and offered to take one out of the bin for me! Then we ordered food. My friend paid (kindly!) and we waited. One by one, they arrived- great. Only two of the meals were missing. My friend asked about them and the waiter barked at her there was nothing else. She asked if she could order it, and he told her it was not his job, nor his problem it hadn't been ordered, so she went in, ordered again. Fair enough it hadn't been paid for, but the reaction from the staff left ALOT to be desired. I'm pretty easy to please, but rude staff is the final straw for me. Once I can tolerate, but three people?? Will not be back. read more

A nice spacious venue near the busiest junction in shoreditch. The kitchen was closed for renovations when I visited so I couldn't say anything about that. The ales weren't noteworthy as well. A really fun bar, especially on a Friday night! This bar was packed and bustling and a lot of fun. There is an outdoor, heated space that is open until 10. Get there early if you want to find a spot. We came here on Saturday afternoon /evening for my birthday drinks, had a blast. I had been able to book a table which was nice and it was baby friendly during the day which was perfect and staff we really good and explained after 6pm it wasn't baby friendly as it gets really busy. Drinks are average price for the area, the food is good- all about the burgers and racks up at just over a tenner for a burger and fries. Another reason to be happy one more bar in the area that has come back from the dead. About 10 years ago this place closed. It was a sad strip bar which had sad punters. But like the Well & Bucket up the road it is newly scrubbed up with new beers and very different clientele. Its an old Truman's brewery pub with the tell tale green tiles in evidence. Inside not much has been altered but that's a good thing as the old handsome bar still pleases the eye. Beer is carefully chosen with craft and local ales to the fore including Urban Dusk, Adams and Doom Bar. There is a wood oven and a garden out the back. I did not try the food but the menu looks varied (a fair bit of fish including lobster and smoked eel) and reasonably priced with most items between about a fiver and £8. I should love this place but perhaps its the high beer prices or the over prevalence of city suits that makes what should be a great new addition to the pub stock of the Shoreditch area a little underwhelming. The building looks great, it has been tastefully resurrected and in a historic area, but mostly I'll chose the nearby Well & Bucket for my 'resurrected pub' fix. Update: I've been back since my review. It was a sunny afternoon and the back garden/yard came into its own. A very nice urban open space to enjoy alfresco drinking. But it was almost empty inside and this highlighted the very stark and bare interior with the bare brick walls without any decoration. They have also installed two GIANT barrels/tanks for Meantime beer.mmmm. Still not convinced about this place but a welcome addition to the locality nonetheless. PS it really does attract a lot of City workers. Whether this is s good/bad/neutral thing is a moot point. read more

Went here on a Saturday afternoon. The beer selection is good but wouldn't really recommend the food. I waited for nearly 45 minutes for (what I thought) was Welsh Rarebit and some fries. When I asked the waitress she said that the ticket had been accidentally dropped on the floor in the kitchen and it would be right out. Fair enough, mistakes happen. What arrived was basically a cold, greasy pita bread sandwich with unmelted cheese and some sort of white goo dripping out of it. Frankly it tasted like vomit and was nothing like any Rarebit I have ever had... Maybe call it a cheese sandwich? Or better yet rethink the whole thing because it was pretty unfit for human consumption. The waitress, however, was really nice and offered to make me something else when she noticed I hadn't eaten much. On her recommendation I had a broccoli wrap which was far better. Think I will go back, just not for food. Oh had fries as well... they were alright but had obviously been sitting around for awhile. 3 stars for the beer selection and friendly waitstaff. read more

This pub has three of the rudest bouncers I've encountered in the area. It's a shame because the pub is a nice one with a decent selection and a big beer garden. The drinks are more expensive than at nearby pubs like the Owl and the Pussycat where you don't get corralled and talked down to by the security staff. Avoid at all costs. read more
