Don't fall for all the frills, salesperson showmanship, newness and close proximity of the doctor…read moreand hospital. Believe only what you yourself experience. Even if you must pay for a meal there, do so and experience as a guest, the big meal of the day: dinner at noon. Talk to at least three different residents, especially those who need the type care your loved one may require. The quality of care is also important, but if the facility refuses to pay competitive or above average wages do you really think the nursing staff will even be average? When we do arrive at our twilight years depression, fear, and basic comfort without pain become our top concerns. The food and quality of care were a rude awakening. If my father had simply accepted an unhappy existence by not stubbornly rebelling, forcing a rapid eviction from the Willows, nether Mom nor Dad would ever have found their final home at Elmwood at the Shawhan. The food and quality of care is much better. They are both much happier now. Be cautious, patient, and thorough when interviewing possible final residences for your loved ones. Ask about tv, activities, and transportation into town. When we reach our twilight years studies have shown that people live longer when they stay physically and emotionally active, Lastly, do not allow yourself to be manipulated by those pollished sales people significantly influenced by huge commissions and bonuses upon new resident signups. You do not want your loved ones to feel like just another number in some 'puppy mill' money farm, do you? TRUST ONLY FOUR THINGS: 1. In person experiences with actual residents. TAKE GOOD NOTES. 2. Experience the food at Noon. 3. Get copy of actual activity schedule. 4. Ask about location of suggestion box. On a good day the Willows scores a 2.

They never did answer the question if they accepted Medicaid once our Mom's money was depleted. I asked for an answer to this 6 times, from the admissions person on the day of admission, a Nurse on 4th floor, another Nurse passing medications, the executive director, and I left 2 voicemails for the owner, Kathy Hunt and NOT ONCE was this question answered. We had a right to know this important question as we were planning for our Mother's long term care placement. After 1 year and 8 months we had enough of the pathetic activities program they say they offered. I walked in the last 14/15 times in a row and found my Mother in bed or sleeping, no matter the day or time I came in the morning or afternoon. We chose to move her to a far more caring facility that had a wonderful, proactive activities program and we have never regretted our decision to move her out of Elmwood at the Shawhan in Tiffin.

The ADON at that time offered me a position, and stated HR would be in touch. She was out for the day. The ADON handed me a paper application and asked that I return it upon my return to meet with HR. After multiple calls and no return calls back, and multiple other job opportunities passed up, i finally reached HR. She stated she had to double check and would be back in touch. And again, days later, no phone call. I find this type of behavior unprofessional. If you want good workers who will Show up and take care of residents ( like they are their own family) this is definitely not the type of professionalism a good worker is looking for. The type of care and consideration you as an employer expect, good employees with good work ethics and integrity expect as well. Also please don't state your rate of pay as over $16.00 hr. You only make over $16 if you pick up or have a shift differential. Starting pay rate is $16.

Management should address the occasional disrespect from some residents towards staff. Open communication can foster mutual respect between staff and residents. As an agency caregiver, I felt disrespected when my services were abruptly canceled without notice. While some aspects were initially satisfactory, I was ultimately treated unprofessionally. Unless management commits to increasing staffing and preventing staff disrespect, I would advise agency caregivers to reconsider working here.

She signed a contract and wrote a check for $576 as a "down payment". The person who visited her (Sarah Olson, who is no longer with them) had to know Mom didn't understand what she was getting into. According to Mom, Sarah couldn't get out of there fast enough once she had the check in hand. This was in September; no services have been rendered, no phone calls have been made to my mom as of December 30th. I found out about this accidentally in November -- Mom didn't want to tell me -- and I contacted the owner, Aaron Olson. I explained the situation, and told him that while we will probably hire them in the future, we were not yet to that point. He told me he would send me forms to cancel, but they were never forthcoming. Repeated calls resulted in getting the run-around, spearheaded by "Phoenix" in the office, who kept promising to call me back with info but never did. She was in the office but would not take my calls ("May I speak to Phoenix please?" "May I say who's calling? Oh, sorry, she's out.") I finally emailed Aaron and he told me he would refund all but a $300 "administration fee", per the contract. I made it clear that that was unacceptable. It has been 20 days and no check has been received. No services rendered. These people claim to have compassion for the elderly. That is a crock. They could have had a long-term customer in the future had they 1) refunded the money, or 2) showed up and actually did something. They did neither. We are now talking to Home Instead about future help for Mom.
