First time here, needed a restaurant that was open late after flying all day and getting in late. Pizza sounded good so my wife and I thought we'd give The Copper Plank a try. Pulled into the parking lot and heard profane, loud language coming from the outdoor restaurant balcony. It's not the restaurant's fault but it set the tone for our experience. After walking in, it was a bit confusing as to where to go for dinner. There were tables in a separate closed off room and the main area was a carpeted dance floor, small bar and very open space. Some people were standing in the open area, a few people sitting at the bar, and one person holding a menu but she left the room. Nobody looked at us nor were we greeted. I walked near the bar and not a single person looked at us. We didn't know who was an employee and who were patrons. It was very unwelcoming and strange so we decided to leave. I can't decide what was more loopy - the architecture or the staff. The place is both about the best pub vibe I've felt in America while they have no idea that they are one. This is a 1915 Elks Club building long ago abandoned, but now a good bar, pizza, wings, margarita, darts hang. The workers were endlessly apologetic about the orders getting screwed up. "Sorry about the wine shortage - argon gas is out". huh? A single slice of pepperoni was brought out in place of the 18" pizza ordered. Huh? Loved having a lunch special in which you could pick a slice a pizza and soup or salad. The Tuscany soup was absolutely delicious. 10/10 and would go back for just that. We were able to pick whatever toppings we wanted on the pizza slice. Of course, I always prefer when it's just out of the oven but the slice was great and they gave fresh parm to go with it. What a champ sweet spot. This is an old Elks Lodge converted into a pizza/brewery with several different seating layouts. Cozy dining and darts to play. We had the Pepperoni and Pepperoncini pizza and a couple IPA's along with a spite. They even gave each person a cup of shaved Parmesan cheese. Service was very friendly and welcoming. Yet, to my surprise, I arrive tonight at 9:15 to meet a friend (already inside) only to be told I could not enter. I asked: "Is there a cover charge...is it a private party?" Yes I know it's Halloween but not many people here ‍ The response from the security person at the door? "No you can't come in." NEIN! I'm the last person to expect special treatment, or to make a scene, but I'm thinking to myself "Self, am I in an alternate/authoritarian reality?" Am I in SoCal or Manhattan? This was a fun stop to grab a beer. People are friendly and welcoming. If I was local, I could see myself coming here a lot. And it seems like people do. I sat out front and watched the sun go down and the cars go by. The back patio had people who were smoking, and it was suffocating. Every time I came inside, a friendly conversation started with someone. The regulars know each other, but they are happy to welcome you. However, there beer needs more carbonation. This is one of those places that makes me regret not living in the area. To start with, the pizza is awesome. Let's just get that out of the way. In addition, dogs are welcome even indoors, and I can't help but enjoy that. The Copper Plank is extreme cozy- which is a polite word that does mean small and crowded. On the night I was there, this meant that a good half of the dining room was taken up with a group of people playing darts. I'm not 100% sure how to phrase this without sounding uncomfortable. I HIGHLY suggest going here.... But you be should probably be prepared for the fact that it is definitely a place for regulars. This is a place that has people devoted to it, and they rule the place. The ones we encountered were quite nice, but it does merit a mention. The alcohol selection was absolutely spectacular. I couldn't ask for better, and flights are available. Being forced outside at one of our favorite local breweries forced us to look for a warm outdoor beer venue.... The Plank delivered, AND THEN SOME!!! Warm, because of the propane heaters, and warm because of Cory and the rest of the crew. We love this place! The beer menu is extensive, and the pizzas and breadsticks are second only to Kaleidescope ( and that's what Kaleidescope does, is pizza) So glad we found it. Good drinks, good variety and not too bad for the atmosphere, BUT.... we were met at the door by a "friendly dog", who was not too keen on having visitors. We were the only patrons when we arrived. The dog barked and barked and barked at us. Once he got used to us, he then barked and barked and barked at each new person that entered. I'm a dog lover, but it is hard to relax and enjoy a drink with a dog barking a few feet away incessantly. Great place in a pretty central location. They have tons of options on tap and the night we were in they had a Deschutes rep in educating on different Deschutes beers and doing a few raffles. Hands down, my favorite place in Medford to grab a great Craft Beer. They have over 50 beers on tap! Most of them (if not all) are local, and they have such a wide variety of beer types. IPA'S, Stouts, Pilsners, Sours, Ciders etc. They even have Kombucha... if you're into that sort of thing. Hayden is a pretty chill Beertender. We always have a great customer experience when he is working. The place is pretty small and can get crowded quickly. They serve pizza by the slice and bread sticks, it's decent. There is also a bunch of board/card games to play. There is at least 1 large screen t.v. that they air sports games on, which is awesome. My ONLY negative remark is that it is NOT cheap. But I guess you are paying for a higher quality beer, so I don't mind spending a little extra. There is also a really awesome back patio complete with hanging lights and an electric fire pit.
