Unexpected storage discoveries
Amanda L.

I love everything about the Container Store other than its prices! You can literally find all storage items here that you've ever dreamed of and many others you have never dreamed you could store in fun ways too! I especially love that Marie Kondo has a collaboration with The Container Store now as well! :) Everything is great here, but I definitely avoid coming here too often given the prices, but when the need arises for something either in a pinch or I'm looking for some storage that is cute and uniform, I definitely come here to take a peek at what they have either to purchase them or for inspiration on what styles I like best so that I can find it elsewhere on the internet for cheaper. Sorry to The Container Store for doing that, but they're just in that spot that's slightly and uncomfortably out of my budget to do a bunch of consistent shopping at for me!

*Disclosure - I came here today for a blogger preview. This is the first Container Store to come to Michigan - they'll be opening one in Troy in late 2016 as well - and it's very nice. I believe West Bloomfield has a similar store a while back, but it wasn't this brand, and this one is in the old Best Buy/Gardner White location just off of Novi Road. We received a bit of information about the company and the store itself, and then took a tour around the store. I'm most excited about the shopping trolleys (I live in an apt. building and have been coveting these for years now), all of the storage solutions, and the closets and bookshelves. The grand opening is this Saturday, June 4th, and there will be giveaways all day. The store is also donating 10% of its profits to Forgotten Harvest, which is nice. Check this store out! :)

Finally, a Container Store in Michigan! This store is nice and everything feels new and clean. The people who work here are very nice and helpful. My only complaint is that the aisles seem Narrower than at other Container Stores that I've been in so it is hard to pass other people.

Hangers galore in any color!!

If you need to let your life organized or at least get your stuff organized then The Container Store will help! The Good: * Staff is super friendly, helpful, and full of creative ideas! * The store is clean inside and out. * The aisles are clearly marked and wide enough to accommodate 2 carts side by side. * The Container Store has a variety of different options to help a person get organized. * When you join the PopStar club -- they get super excited and all near by staff yell with enthusiasm. The Bad: * Come with measurements and a plan! It can get quite overwhelming if you don't. * If you are looking for cheap organizing options - I'd probably try somewhere else first. I've seen similar items at more reasonable prices at IKEA. Overall: A solid five stars. At first I wanted to give four stars BUT the amazing staff at this location has me to giving five stars!

There are beautiful displays to help spark your imagination and the pricing is very large and clear so if you are working with a contractor with a per square foot price range you are in good shape. And, what they have on the floor is in stock (you can generally see it sitting there.)Product selection and availability are definitely not the issues. So, what is? Service. They just haven't figured that out yet. The person I feel for the most is the cashier. I have now tried checking out twice and the illegible UPC codes typically printed on the depth side (yeah like a quarter inch deep) are distorted and impossible to scan. Two out of two times she has had to either go get a legible code or stand there calling for assistance that never comes. I had to go run and get a couple different samples hoping one might scan easier. So, if one person is in front of you in line it will take no less than 10 minutes to checkout. And then on the floor, you have people very willing to help but you have to stand there as they go rushing by saying "I promise I will be right with you". So I am not saying the people don't want to help you, it's just there are bad systems and processes that make it really difficult for them to do it.

I continue to go back because they do have some really fun items to look at, but if you want to purchase anything that is heavy or you need assistance with good luck, finding someone to help. Also, I once saw something on a reel about how they will have one item with multiple prices and it's true! I was purchasing an end table and one of them was priced $10 higher than the other. I grabbed the one with the lower sticker and when I asked the employee about it, she had no idea what I was talking about

WOAH WOAH WOAH. How had I never been to an At Home store before yesterday?? I'm not entirely sure…read morebut in some ways it's a good thing because I would have spent way too much time of my youth going up and down their aisles. So, yesterday I was next door at Duluth stocking up on some hot new overalls and decided to pop in to At Home because I need a few new garden decor thingys to replace some stuff that (after nearly a decade!) I've had to retire. 3 hours later I left with a cart full of garden gnomes, plant stands, a new patio umbrella, a small outdoor mat, and metal garden stakes. I also walked every aisle, and made mental notes to return for some organizing things once I have my office redo finished. The price points feel a little steep for some of the items, and they didn't have particularly deep markdowns but i'd say the prices are about on par, if not a bit less than, Homegoods. But the sheer volume of options they carry makes up for it. When I walked in I said "Oh my God" because the store is HUGE. They easily had 8 rows of just lawn figurines and the aforementioned metal signs. I said to my mom, "it's not just that they have a lot of stuff they have a lot of variety in each item of stuff." So, not just a handful of patio cushions but multiple rows dedicated to several different styles and patterns. At least 4 aisles of just REALLY BIG planter pots. Halloween and Christmas already had a bit of a showing and honestly, I wasn't even mad because the place is so huge it just feels like they should keep those displays up all the time because they've got the space for it. Now that I've gotten my bearings I don't think i'll need quite as many hours to visit (i don't think I'll need another walk through the picture frames or oversized candelabras anytime soon) but who knows. Now that I've been once I can't wait to see what they have in store (literally and figuartively) for peak holiday time!

Nice looking store and fun to generally browse. A little bit of an odd experience at this store…read morethough when visiting "on a mission". We were looking to visit Crate & Barrel in Novi to have the opportunity to check out some dining tables I had seen online. I wanted to get a sense of the look & feel in person. First off, the location/address on Yelp and Google Maps should be updated. We navigated to what is actually a La-Z-Boy store nearby Twelve Oaks mall. Took some searching to figure out the store is actually located inside the mall (Upper Level by Macy's). The dining table I was most interested in was super beat up in the store. It's a wood veneer, and the one they had on the floor had tons of scratches and dings on the surface. I asked if someone was available to help, as I had some questions about durability, delivery costs, warranties, lead time, etc. I think they must've been busy that day because I sort of felt like it was a burden to them to have someone to talk to me. I asked if we could demo the extension functionality of the table, a main part of why I wanted to see the table in person, to see how difficult/easy it was, and what that process was like to extend or shorten the table. It basically didn't work. I actually think the experience in person made me decide to not get the table. Wasn't clear (and I asked) if I were to buy it, if the table would get to that condition within months, years, etc. Was pitched a Crate & Barrel credit card while I was there.

My wife insisted on them assembling it and as I predicted it was a complete disaster. I found dirty fingerprint smudges all over the white furniture, table top installed backwards, parts missing, and a giant chip in the wood. This is exactly why I do everything myself because you can't rely on anyone else to do it right. These guys are delivery people, not cabinet markers who will assemble anything with any care! They just want to finish up as fast as possible, get to the next stop and be done for the day. We will see how Pottery Barn deals with this. I'll change my review if their customer service impresseme...I'm not holding my breath. Oh by the way...a couple days after we ordered (and weeks before delivery) the unit went on deeper discount, called for a called price adjustment, Pottery Barn does do that! Give me a break! UPDATE: So Pottery Barn actually stood behind their product and sent out a new loft bed. The second unit also had lots of dirty smudges on the pieces that arrived out of their box. I cleaned these myself to prevent anymore delay. I assembled the unit myself and overall I'm pretty happy with the build quality, although not blown away. But at the end of the day my daughter loves it...and that's what it's all about. I still feel the burn of this transaction and just don't see myself buying Pottery Barn again anytime soon. Go elsewhere.
