We were here on a long weekend trip to the South-West and this was our base. We managed to get a great deal, make sure you check online for special rates. They even offered dinner at the hotel for an extra 7.00 GBP per person per night (usually 25 GBP per person). It was well worth it! Their three-course dinners and coffee were highly acceptable. However, one night I chose the banoffee pie for desserts, which left me having the runs all night (it must have been the cream). They also do a decent breakfast selection. The decor feels like that of an old country club. The staff are friendly and courteous and the only complaint that I have is that the bed is quite small and uncomfortable. I ended up sleeping on the floor... it was far more comfortable than the bed!

When pulling our rented Mondeo into the forecourt, the car suddenly looked at home... That's it yes... The Brend hotel was a relabelled Ford garage unless I am very much mistaken! Even down to the blue oval Brend logo that slotted into the silver frontage of the building. In short, for nearly £80 I got a single bed that had all of the comfort of broken concrete, staff who had all of the enthusiasm of lobotomised narcoleptics and the breakfast looked like it had spent time in a blender. I arrived at three minutes before 2, to be told that I could not order lunch, because they ceased serving at 2pm. Not a good start on the customer service front. I ventured to my room (that was completely out of the front entrance of the reception area and across the car park) and entered my pink-carpeted digs. Not the largest of rooms, with the aforementioned single bed taking up the majority of the space. The bathroom was even tiny - if you sat on the toilet, you could burn your face on the heated towel rail, if that was your kind of thing. It's not mine, but each to their own... After the gig, we joined the many coffin dodgers that were also residing there in the bar for a drink. The male bartender was super-polite and helpful, but the female (I think she was female, but I can not verify this assumption due to the Hitler attitude and slicked-back, heavily gelled hairdo) bartender was so full of passive aggression it clearly sent us the message to go to bed as it was nearly 11:30! The staff were friendly at breakfast, but the Full English was a write-off in the Ford garage. Uncooked bacon, the cheapest, rusk-filled sausage and soggy hash browns all mixed together with nasty baked beans. Bon appetit! Wi-Fi was not free, which winds me up - it is no extra cost for the hotel to provide this. The Gideon Bible ninjas had not visited my room. Possibly they were thwarted in their efforts by the grumpy Hitler bartender. I will give this place a miss next time.

We were greeted at the reception by Michael who was not only efficient in his duties but was extremely nice and helpful. Our room was a little on the small side but very clean, modern, well appointed, and had everything we needed for our one night stay. Their evening menu looked good but I can't comment on its quality as we walked into the town center and dined out. We will be having breakfast in the morning so will update this review and let you know how it fared! Location is also good, only a 10 minute walk into the town center. We were first assigned T41, and because a more accessible unit wasn't available, they labeled a parking spot closest to our unit as "reserved". T41 has 2 bathrooms but both are upstairs with the bedrooms. So that room ultimately didn't work for us. The Reception crew worked hard to find us a different unit, and we ended up choosing Unit 7, aka the Woodpecker bungalow. Both units were nicely refurbished, though the bungalow needed more hand holds around the tub. T41 was very bright in the morning, as the master bedroom windows faced the rising sun. There were peacocks everywhere, screeching up a storm! They quieted down at night though. The dinner and breakfast we ate at the restaurant were good and average priced. We missed the Sunday roast by a few hours. (12-4) The only downside to this property is that it's general location requires driving down country lanes to get to sightseeing points of interest. That process was daunting and time-consuming. But we're glad we had this experience and got to explore this part of the country.

The facilities and grounds are nice, including the apartments (where we stayed as part of a timeshare exchange) and some suites at the other end of the property. Facilities include an onsite bar and restaurant (serving dinner only, breakfast by appointment), indoor pool, spa, fitness center, game room and small store. There is a rec director with some planned activities, and they also offer a menu of spa stuff (massage, hair salon, etc.). The pros: well-maintained, friendly and helpful staff, decent food. The cons: very little to do, crappy wifi, fitness center opens late (8:30 am), dysfunctional kitchen in our unit. The biggest downer was the lack of much to do in the surrounding area. We did take day trips to Bude, Lynmouth and the Dartington Crystal Factory, but we found it hard to fill a week, and wound up leaving two days early. There are some restaurants in the general area, but any of them entail a bit of a drive on narrow country lanes, something we avoided after dark. Our unit was a 1-BR apartment, which was overfurnished (the huge chest/coffee table took up most of the available floor space in the living room), and the kitchen was so small and dysfunctional as to be nearly useless. And if you need Internet access, be forewarned - they just recently installed wifi in the rooms, which hardly worked at all; I was able to get access by taking my laptop to the reception area, which was kind of a pain in the ass considering that I paid £30 for in-room access. The spa is really tiny, barely big enough for two people. And if you fancy a massage or beauty treatment, note that this operation is separate from the resort, and accepts cash or check only (no credit card or room charges). I used the fitness center and pool, and both were satisfactory. The staff was very accommodating, and that really helped a lot. The food was decent, and included a Sunday carvery, with menu changes throughout the week . . the restaurant wasn't huge on ambiance, so we wound up eating every night in the bar, which we greatly enjoyed. Probably won't be back, largely because there isn't enough to do, although for a week of mostly R & R, it might be the ticket.

Breakfast is at 8.30 which we thought would be a problem as all guests were to arrive then. it wasn't, the staff are really well organised and orders were taken very quickly, and food arrived just after. Great breakfast, well done. This hotel does exactly as you would expect. There are a reasonable amount of reasonable shops to enjoy all nearby and a great selection of coffee shops and restaurants. It is a steep incline so if you are not in shape, then I recommend a different location. You can take the funicular down to the the carpark and the hotel has parking as well. It's close to many buses and you can visit nearby areas. Everyday, there was an option of full English breakfast (with meat or vegetarian) or porridge or cereal. They had hot coffee and tea prepared daily when asked. In our rooms, there were tea biscuits and cookies as well as a kettle and also some milk and coffee packets (caf and decaf). There was also an ability to place dinner requests by 4 pm to dine downstairs each evening. On the first floor, there was a room filled with games and puzzles and also another one with a chess board and relaxing arm chairs. The only downside was that it's an old Victorian home so you can hear your neighbors walking, talking, and pretty much living.

Very popular during the season for lunches and evening meals, so you'll often find it very busy indeed. They also do a really excellent Sunday lunch. It can be difficult to get rooms during the season as they get booked up really quickly - if you see the views from the rooms, you'll understand why.
