On Sunday we went out in search of card sleeves for our sons new Pokémon cards (he's 5 and just…read morestarting to get interested in the game). We originally went over to Doc D's Trading Cards, not realizing he sold mainly sports cards. He directed us to The Comic Book Depot, which we thought was really nice as it was clear we weren't sure what exactly we were looking for and he had plenty of sleeves he could have easily just sold us without a second thought. We went to comic book Depot and it was packed. Since we didn't plan on going there, we didn't realize an event was going on and we walked in right about 20 minutes before a Pokémon Event was beginning so all of the employees were very busy getting everyone checked in and set up. Despite that we only waited about 5 minutes before we were assisted, and the guys who helped us were absolutely great. They sell a bunch of single cards for $1 or 5 cards for $4, and then have some more in a display. They were great at helping out a little very excited boy work on building his deck. A new world, a new artist, a new style of story - there is certainly something here for everyone. The owner reads a lot and is extremely knowledgeable about pretty much everything on the shelves! He is always providing great, curated recommendations (whether you know what you are looking for or not). Chances are, you'll be introduced to your new favorite story, writer, or artist. The shop is constantly adding new things and is super up-to-date on the latest industry trends including upcoming titles and emerging artists and writers. There is also a section featuring the work of smaller, local artists and writers which is cool to see. Along those lines, Escape Pod's social media accounts are very active and a great resource if you are interested in what's new or happening in the shop and locally in Huntington. Be on the lookout for signings, events, and more! As with most shops, you can create a pull list for ongoing books that you want set aside upon release. I enjoy that Escape Pod uses an online system that you can log into and manage. Books are always ready to go and in great condition. Upon walking in, there is an entire wall of new comics to choose from (bagged and boarded, which is a nice touch for us collectors) every Wednesday, and a good selection of back issues to comb through as well in the back of the store. Also in the back of the store, there are a few arcade games set up for the kids (or adults, if you're a fan!). Rocky's has a very large selection of collectibles (yup, toys) to browse. Tons of Funko PoPs to find here, from the newest releases to harder to find exclusives from past Comic Cons. In addition, you'll find a variety of comic-based character statues, action figures, Pez dispensers, plushies, you name it. If you don't see it, Dio is always happy to order it for you if possible. The prices on all of the aforementioned collectibles are the final icing on the cake, as everything is priced fairly and usually even lower than you'd find most of these items online or in other stores. As a collector myself, this is very much appreciated! All in all, if you are a fan/collector of comics, super heroes, sci-fi, or anything along those lines, Rocky's Comics is a must visit. In addition to just being generally excellent, there's one fun detail that sets Chosen One aside from its competition: All of their "blind boxes" have already been opened and identified. Traditionally, every "blind box" series has an unknown toy inside of an opaque box, so the person buying one doesn't know what they'll get. Instead of following the traditional narrative, Chosen One opens each blind box, and then labels what they are. If you are looking for a specific piece within a blind box line, this is the place to go to get that exact one. Outside of their great blind box selection, Chosen One has a fantastic (and very diverse!) inventory of all sorts of toys and collectibles, new and old. I am positive that there's something for every toy enthusiast here.

This store is about one mile from my house and I had never been here before, even though they have been here over 20 years. This was their annual charitable event. I was greeted the door by Storm Troopers and Darth Vader. It was obvious that they have the right formula here. The small shop is PACKED with comic books and memorabilia. This is clearly the home base for comic book collectors and aficionados. I was here to see one of the artists drawing and support their charitable cause. I always find it amazing to watch an artist go from pen-paint-pencil to paper. Amazing talent. I had the opportunity to meet a cmic book author. We had an amazing conversation that was capped off by determining we went to elementary school together in Queens. It's always a small world. The owner is a wonderful man who is dedicated to his passion and charity work. I am looking forward to next years show and will look to possibly partner with them in my own charitable events.
