Escape Pod Comics is hands down one of the best comic shops on Long Island. Not only is it a great place for comic lovers, but also graphic novel readers, artists, families with kids looking for something to share, and individuals who are searching for something new to enjoy. A new world, a new artist, a new style of story - there is certainly something here for everyone. The owner reads a lot and is extremely knowledgeable about pretty much everything on the shelves! He is always providing great, curated recommendations (whether you know what you are looking for or not). Chances are, you'll be introduced to your new favorite story, writer, or artist. The shop is constantly adding new things and is super up-to-date on the latest industry trends including upcoming titles and emerging artists and writers. There is also a section featuring the work of smaller, local artists and writers which is cool to see. Along those lines, Escape Pod's social media accounts are very active and a great resource if you are interested in what's new or happening in the shop and locally in Huntington. Be on the lookout for signings, events, and more! As with most shops, you can create a pull list for ongoing books that you want set aside upon release. I enjoy that Escape Pod uses an online system that you can log into and manage. Books are always ready to go and in great condition. Not to be confused with Escape Pooed Comics, which is when you have an accident in your underpants, them take them off and run away. What a lovely little comic book store. Several other people have told me that this is the best comic book store on Long Island, and I wouldn't be able to really compare cuz I haven't been to other comic book stores on Long Island, but if this one is anything to go by then Long Island is the comic capital of the country. Still the best comic book store on Long Island, my personal favorite comic store in the country. Always something worth getting, displays and stock are constantly updated. This is not the store for toys, cards, collectibles, merch, or anything other than comics--and primarily paperbacks and bound editions, with a respectable weekly dose of single issues. Since many reviews have mentioned the shop's "odd hours"--the owner closes early Fridays and is closed every Saturday in observance of the sabbath, so, mystery solved for you all. read more

Went to this store today. Had called to see if they had a comic my niece wanted. Yep! He was ready for me! Comic pulled along with others I might be interested in. So easy! I asked for something more, he was so helpful ( sorry, I am not really a comic person), but he came back so quickly with really more than I could ask. The hardest part was choosing! I'm not much of a denizen of comic book shops, so it's honestly hard for me to compare Escape Pod to others. So, if wthat affects your assessment of my rating and its value...then so be it. Escape Pod has a wide assortment of graphic novels, as well as a room in back with lots of old comic books. My family and I have come to Escape Pod periodically since it first opened. At this point we have fallen into a pattern. We look around, pulling all sorts of comics, and making a big pile. Then we ask Menachem (the owner and proprietor) about each one. He tells us about the books, the authors, the artwork...anything that he thinks is relevant. We then make our decisions about what to buy and what not to. Menachem's insight is usually spot on. And, since we're regulars, he's gotten a feel for what each of us likes. He is honest in his assessments, and does not hesitate to tell us that he doesn't think we'd like "this," or "that" isn't really right for us. SO I believe he means it when he recommends something. Menachem never makes us feel rushed, and is always generous with his time. I love coming here. And, as with all of my reviews, I have to note that I don't know why Yelp thinks I'm in San Francisco. read more

I don't remember which of Scott McCloud's books reference it (maybe Reinventing Comics?), but at one point he talks about his ideal comic store: a store that was filled to the brim with all different sorts of comics, from all over the world, without being cluttered with action figures, card games and endless geek culture paraphernalia. Whenever I go into Escape Pod Comics, I think that this is the kind of store that McCloud had in mind. I like geek culture as much as the next nerdgirl, but it does seem to be becoming increasingly monolithic lately. Like Superman? Then you must love Game of Thrones! Like the X-Men? Then you must collect Funko Pop figures! The fact of the matter is, not all of us like every single geek thing under the sun, and Escape Pod is for people who are interested in sequential art in all of its myriad forms; not movies, not toys, not collectible card games and so on. There is SOME other merchandise in the store (I mean, let's not be ridiculous), but it's still refreshing to have a comic book store that's so focused on comics. Speaking to the shopping experience, the owner has that rare gift for being able to make informed suggestions to help you explore the world of comics, without feeling like you're being pressured to purchase his choices. Usually I prefer it when salespeople let me browse by myself because I hate feeling like I'm being pressured, but Menachem knows how to draw your attention to things that might interest you in a way that's genuinely helpful and not pushy. Another great feature of the store is the children's room in the back, great when you're shopping for gifts for little ones. Note: the store also stocks some children's books, but primarily those drawn by comics professionals. If you're looking for more typical children's books (ex. The Very Hungry Caterpillar), you'll need to look elsewhere. Still, the store has some really neat books for kids that you may not see elsewhere. The comic stores from my youth are pretty much all gone these days; I hope Escape Pod Comics stays around for a long, long time. I really need more people to shop at this store so I can both feel confident it's going to stay open for the long haul, and so I don't end up buying everything myself. read more

By far my favorite comic book store on Long Island! I do mean comic books. You'll find some other comics-related merchandise, but the focus is certainly on comics. I can go in and talk comics for hours with Menachem, while finding a lot of great titles of mainstream and non-mainstream comics to enjoy reading. Menachem has a great track record for finding titles that will be enjoyed by almost anyone, so if you need recommendations, just ask. There is a range of prices depending on sales and specials, if one is a hold list customer, as well as super affordable back issues at only a dollar a piece. There is some great pop art for sale as well, often from local creators, making Escape Pod a vital part of the local arts community. Fantastic special events have been held at the store, signings, lectures, Free Comic Book Day (with so much available still long after that day, if this isn't your primary store). Menachem is in touch with so many creators in the comics industry, via social media as well as a few who are local, so he gets some great guests to sign at the shop, along with some exclusive items here and there. If you value reading comics over "collecting" them, then this is definitely the place for you. It's also something of a family business, with members of Menachem's family contributing to some amazing window displays. Yeah, the store is closed Friday evenings and Saturdays for religious reasons (some things are more important than capitalism, folks), but has extensive hours all the other days of the week. I've lived in five states, sometimes in major cities, and you don't find many shops open past seven at night, even on Wednesdays. At Escape Pod, you can often shop and talk shop until nine at night. I first visited the shop the week the store opened and I've seen it grow in wondrous ways and I look forward to its evolution in the coming years as this store masterfully serves so many needs of folks who read comics. read more

This is a great comic book store. Very hip and cool. You can find super heroes, manga, and some of the more esoteric writers, like Harvey Pekar and Robert Crumb. Plenty of cool art work too. This is a very worthwhile business and one which deserves support. read more

This store was more of what we need to see. Clean, well lit and well laid out, with a down and dirty (but not really dirty) $1.00 box room in the back. We went here for a new comic day signing, which the owner managed to cram into the available space. We flew up from Atlanta just to visit this shop. We've been having them ship us comics for years, but we finally got to meet Menachem in person! The selection is excellently curated; in addition to your standard fare, he stocks tons of indie graphic novels, self-published stuff, hard-to-find collector's items, and even a few imported books. The children's and young adult section is great, and I wish I'd had time to dig into the boxes of back issues. I wish Huntington wasn't so far away - this is such a nice little shop! Brightly lit, easy to navigate and filled with so many comics from indie artists. I was delighted to see physical copies from so many web artists I love. I went for an author signing so I just purchased a few things and ran so I didn't clog up the shop any more. Next time I go back I want to take the time to sort through what I would consider a very interesting selection. There was a nice used section and a few blind box options to fill your desire for stuff. No wall of Funko Pops here (that's a good thing). I felt really good and welcome when I stepped in the door here, plus the owner was friendly and engaging. Hope to go back soon. read more

I had some time to kill in Huntington today and happened upon this wonderful shop.
