It's hard to say bad things about this place. Sure, the comedians aren't as polished as you see on your typical HBO stand up special, but being rough around the edges has its own merits- especially in comedy, where slip ups can make jokes even funnier. There is a a lot to like about the Comedy Studio. The cover ($8!!!!) is ridiculously cheap, and you can drink scorpion bowls and eat a pu pu platter while you watch. Get there early, because this place sells out pretty much nightly. The bottom line: for $8 you get 2 hours of comedy and GREAT atmosphere. Highly recommended. read more

I booked a party here for my husbands 40th in the summer of 2007 based on a recommendation from a coworker. They were SO EASY to work with. Purchased a group of tickets without a problem, they sat us at a great table all together and EVERYONE had a fantastic time. Hey! I love stand-up comedy and have been to see shows all around the Boston area. While I admit I am entertained by the comedians that perform at the comedy studio, I have one major problem. While trying to enjoy a show I overheard someone talking shit about other comedians- specifically someone who I had seen before and was GREAT. This upset me and I wanted to complain about this behavior and to my horror found out the person talking shit was the OWNER. This is one of the most unprofessional things I have EVER encountered and I will NEVER go back to the comedy studio again. Sorry performers- but I will catch your shows somewhere else. read more

This place is a good stop for anyone feeling down and in the dump. There are usually a handful of solid comedians that are here each night. The host is usually entertaining and tries to involve the crowd in some of his corny jokes. He has a tendency to reuse some stuff, but you can either laugh with him or you can laugh at him. He goes for the perve act and tries to hit on the younger girls in the place, but it is all in good fun. This place not only has comedy, but it also has a fantastic drink, the scorpion bowl. Beware of these though. They may not taste like alcohol, but there is plenty in one of these to get you going. Before you know it, you will be up on stage doing the macarena with the creepy host. It is a bit small in here, so on the busy nights you should probably get here early to get a good seat, or a seat at all. There have been times where there was plenty of seating and there have been times where we had to sit on each others laps because there was no other place. This is a must stop when in Harvard square with some free time or if you don't have anything else to do. read more

I really enjoyed every comedian that performed at The Comedy Studio, which is quite an accomplishment. Given the number of comedians that were in the lineup, you'd expect that there would be a few that aren't that funny or entertaining, but no, they were all a riot. Also, it was such a great, diverse mix of talents, it was really refreshing to see and hear. When ordering tickets online, there are a couple options - advanced seating (table) and general admission (barstool). Both are the same price. I recommend advanced seating because you'll be guaranteed sitting with your friends and you'll also be more comfortable. The barstool seating are along the wall like a horseshoe while the tables are situated in the middle of the room. With the barstool seating, you have to get there early if you want to sit with all your friends (earlier if you have a big group). Also, sitting on a barstool is not that comfortable since you don't have back support and the show is 2 hours long. I'll definitely be recommending The Comedy Studio to friends, and will be back again. It's definitely worth it! read more

Just like all the other reviews, this place is great! The drinks are stiff, entry is only $12, and the host is great. Get there early, as parking is a bit tricky and tickets sell out fast- it's first come, first serve. I found it especially interesting to see a comedian that I've seen several times in Vegas. In total, there were 10 comics each performing 10 min each. It was great to enjoy a show in the attic of an asian restaurant in the Harvard district and it was one of the highlights of my trip. You can order chinese food during the show. The crab ragoon was an okay snack, but I would skip the greasy fried rice. All in all, just go! You will not regret it! read more

Absolute best comedy spot in the city; I've been a regular here for years. Cool atmosphere (attic of a Chinese restaurant that looks like a scene out of Big Trouble in Little China), but go here for the quality of the comedians. Ah, the Comedy Studio at the Hong Kong. It's relatively small, could be considered to be in the attic of a Chinese restaurant, and is chock full of comedic talent. When one of my former co-workers invited me to come see him do stand up, I balked. The promise of a magic show (Tuesdays, I think) did not exactly sweeten the deal for me. "What if my friend's a hack? He seems funny, but what if he's not? What if they're all hacks?" I needn't have worried. My friend - and most of the comedians I've seen perform at the Studio over the last two years - was/is/are really funny. Performers and performances vary, but it's a rare set here that doesn't leave me in stitches. (The scorpion bowls certainly don't hurt on that end.) I've been here at least half a dozen times, and have been impressed every time - especially when big timers like Eugene Merman and Letterman's talent scout are in the audience and hop up on stage. If you strip away the comedy, which you shouldn't, you might not be so wowed. In terms of refreshments, the food menu consists of tasty (greasy) Chinese food that will seem like a great idea at the time, but, well, to put it gently, will almost definitely upset your stomach. The wait staff can also bring you tasty beverages; I normally order a super cheap Shock Top or a super large Scorpion Bowl to share with friends. The Comedy Studio may not be the best bar or restaurant, but it's THE place to laugh your ass off and get drunk with your friends. read more

Very very funny. I used to come here A LOT when I was under 21 and needed something fun to do in the city. It is very funny and there was never a time when I did not laugh hysterically. Sometimes the comics will use you as part of their act so be warned if you are shy. Located oh so close to Harvard Square which makes it easy to access. I swear I only paid $6 as a student, but the site seems to insist it costs $8. Either way, it is an incredible deal. Perfect place to try something new on a friday or saturday night. I have gone to the Comedy Studio for years and miss being close by! I love how there is a variety of different comedy styles, and the show is a good two hours long. For $10-$12, it is a great deal for a night out. The food options aren't the greatest, but it's a comedy show first and foremost. I suggest making reservations online. Yes, you'll pay a convenience fee BUT you can arrive closer to 8 and have a guaranteed, reserved seat. Full disclosure: I'm married to an amateur stand-up comedian. I'm not writing this to kiss a#@ and get him stage time. He already performs here, so that's unnecessary. That said, I think I'm in a unique position to write a review because I've been to so many comedy clubs in New England. The Comedy Studio is hands-down the best one. It's located near public transportation and lots of restaurants and bars to round our your evening. The space is large enough for a good crowd but small enough to be intimate. It's dark and low-tech but it's neat because it's rough. It creates a cool low-key experience where the comedy is the thing. The ladies at the door are welcoming, the bar and table service is prompt and friendly. The cover and drinks are quite reasonably priced, especially considering the quality of the comedy. The comedians are funny, unique, unpredictable, interesting, and awesome. Occasionally they have well known comedians mixed in with the local crowd. This place is cool, funky, & funny and that's why it always sells out. Boston's best kept secret in comedy. read more

Host is equally has entertaining as the comedians. there was a nice variety of comedians the night I went, some were better than others, but the variety left something for everyone's sense of humor I think. Inexpensive tickets & inexpensive drinks. And if you feel like hanging around, you can go downstairs to Hong Kong & have drinks with the comedians afterwords. They have an excellent comedy show. The drinks offered were mostly themed around rum, but they all looked tasty, and were very low priced by Boston standards. The stand-up itself was wonderful, a good mix between crowd work and pre-meditated comedic bits. The show happens on the top of floor of Hong Kong, which I was surprised by since I only knew it as a dance floor for the bar. The space is intimate enough that everyone can feel very included in the crowd work of the presiding host between comedians. The guy who runs it (and owns the bar) was nice beyond belief, even offering free drinks to people from stage, and bringing gifts to people he had emailed with for tickets. I would highly recommend the show, only if you're ok with laughing for 2 hours straight. read more

First comedy club I've ever been to and had a blast. They get their food from the resturant, Hong Kong, which is located underneath the club. The food and drink prices are very competitive, and they usually have a good special going. The comedians are quite good, however definitely seem to be under a tight schedule. Probably the funniest comedy show I've seen, though I do mostly go to improv shows, so maybe I need to check out more stand-up. Even the guy who announced the host was full of energy. I have nothing bad to say, really. Hilarious and pretty cheap. Seats are assigned, and you sit at long tables (or at the seats lined up against the walls) and order drinks or food if you want. I really like the host on Thursday nights, though can't remember his name. 8$ during the week and cheap beer is great and the comedians are usually great. AMAZING! Pretty much any show you go to here is $12 or LESS!, and lasts about 2 hours. You will get to see a good mix of comedians of all ages/races/types of comedy, they all go on for about 7-10 minutes, and the time goes quickly. We have been a number of times here and have even seen special celebrity guests (from comedy central, hbo etc) surprisingly show up to close the shows. The owner Rick hosts a lot of the time and is hillarious. He interacts with the audience and comedians and makes for a great show! They offer a full bar & limited menu, though the food is not my favorit, the scorpion bowls are! They even do a Magic show on Tuesdays that I have been to and left amazed at how good the show was. Went with a group of 4 friends. We bought our tickets online ahead of time and good thing because it was sold out and there was still quite a long line who had to be turned away. This was my first comedy show and it was pretty good. Maybe about 3-4 comics of the ~10 who performed were drop dead hilarious. The host was pretty good too and I took home a 2013 calendar as a gift lol. The chinese food was uhm not very good though - in my opinion. The wait staff was courteous and navigated the tight room well. I would definitely go again and next time skip the $30 bill for bad chinese food :). read more

This is one of my favorite spots in all of Boston. You can get two hours of excellent standup comedy for $10. The Comedy Studio is known for breeding young talent, so don't come here looking for big names. But you might come here and see someone performing for their first time, then see them on Comedy Central one year later. They have comedy most nights of the week, and it's always good. Rick Jenkins is a great host, though when you've been there around 20 times, like I have, you can finish all of his jokes. You can also order food to your table from the Hong Kong downstairs. It's nothing special, but it's not too pricy and really convenient. The Comedy Studio is known for its scorpion bowls which are essentially big bowls of pink alcohol. This is a great way to go out on a Saturday night, grab food and have fun at the same time, and get a little buzz on before going out to the bars or clubs! read more

Pretty much always a great time. I've been a few times and have always had an amazing time. I've seen a range of talent levels, certainly, but I am always pleasantly surprised at the caliber performer I see there. And it's true: you cannot beat the atmosphere of a comedy club over a Chinese restaurant. A unique comedy experience - that's for sure! How many times can you say that you went to see stand-up in the attic of a Chinese restaurant? And yes, you can order Chinese food and eat it while you're watching the acts. What could be better?! There are normally 6 or so commedians with a couple of very famous or soon to be famous ones passing through. Love the atmosphere, the commedians, and the crowd. This is a really fun place for a night out! The comics vary in terms of style and experience, but each comic I have seen at the Comedy Studio has been good. The seating could definitely be more comfortable, as the tables and chairs are cramped and arranged on an angle, so that they don't actually face the stage. The club is also pretty small, but it gives the place an intimate feel. One of the best parts is that you can order food from the chinese restaurant downstairs and have it delivered to you during the show! read more

I attended the Women In Comedy Festival Stand-Up night. My first time there. Very good wait staff - asked if you wanted a drink shortly after getting seated, and it arrived a few minutes later. The host / owner was good, and established a rapport with patrons at the front of the stage. I'd say around 10 performers, and six were good. The owner said The Comedy Studio has won best comedy club in Boston the past three years running. I haven't been to one locally in a while. But, I did go to one in Rotterdam, NY, which was painful... If Boston has a slow weekend for events, I'll definitely give The Comedy Studio another visit! read more
