let me start by saying I'm sure the show is absolutely wonderful and I wish I'd gotten to see it. my review is largely about my experience with the theatre, but does pertain specifically to Slutcracker staff as well. first of all, my wife and I are both multiply disabled. I was advised months ago by venue staff that I should book normal tickets and then request accessible seating the night of the event. the event is open seating first come first serve. We found seats that actually almost worked for us, except that neither of us could remotely fit in the seat. Now, being larger bodied I'm used to squeezing on a plane, but never ever in my life have I experienced being fully unable to get in the seat. I marched right down to the venue staff and asked politely for accessible seating, explaining that my wife and I just could not fit in our seats. The usher had no idea what to do but directed me to the person in charge of Accessible seating. We were led to our seats. To our shock, their solution to accessibility is to place folding chairs in the aisle AT THE VERY FRONT OF THE STAGE. I felt so awkward being placed there in front of everyone. My wife even worse. I asked a few more questions to make sure these fit our needs and it turned out they didn't - again, we were unable to use these seats because of our multiple disabilities. I advised the kind staff that these wouldn't work, could we please work toward a refund. They said I had to go through Ticketmaster. So, my review pertains exclusively to the venue and staff. while we were there we noticed numerous accessibility issues. it's for one, not possible to enter the venue through the main door if you aren't able to walk. As I stated, the seats are microscopic. None of the amenities seem accessible and you'd have a time navigating the venue in a wheelchair or with mobility aids, because the tiny lobby is totally taken up by concession stand lines. I was able to get a refund from Ticketmaster, I will never be able to attend a performance in this theatre. so beware if you're disabled! read more

I've never seen the classic rendition of the Nutcracker, so I don't have an inkling as to how close the Slutcracker follows the story line of the original ballet. I would argue, though, that the Slutcracker is more of a saucy comedic play than a burlesque show. Sure there's lots of skin bared, but being nude does not equal burlesque. Still, there were some laughs to be had and I was never bored during the show. There's tons of body diversity in the production, which is a refreshing change. The plot is easy to follow and the crowd is raucous, as expected. With the intermission, the Slutcracker is about 2 hours long. The group that I went with loved the show - I guess I'm just the grinch. I guess I was hoping for something more Christmas-y? And burlesque-y? And visible? I was straining to see what was going on for the entire show, but that's more to do with the venue (i.e., Somerville Theater). Slutcracker is a Christmas tradition for some. This show was beyond disappointing! The best 2 cast members were the ones that came out at set changes and clean up. Super disappointing considering all the "good" reviews. I would have preferred going to a child's dance recital at least they have more than 5 moves they preform and do it well. The slutcracker was just very sloppy overall. I will start my review by saying this, I am not a burlesque expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I have gone to a fair number of them and I do typically enjoy the experience. For me, burlesque needs to walk a fine line between being sexual and artsy. For me, I felt like Slutcracker was just weird soft porn (the type you used to get on HBO at night back in the 90's). I came to the show expecting a lot of nudity (and I got it) but I also came expecting talented dancing and I felt as if that was lacking. I will say that the one thing I loved about the show was the amount of diversity. People of all races, genders and body types were on stage and I thought that was awesome! There were also some very talented dancers (the dance who played Clara was very good). But there were a lot of subpar dances and people were tripping over their feet quite often. I feel like for something of this nature to work and not just feel like a frat boys wet dream, the dancing needs to be on point and it just wasn't. With that said, it was still enjoyable. I probably wouldn't go again, nor would suggest that anyone go out of their way to see it, but it was a fun couple of hours. read more

Number 400's going to the only standard holiday tradition I have that involves an anthropomorphic phallus. Ok, one of two. In the few short years the now mainstay of Somerville Theatre's winter program has run, this homegrown production has matured from a ragtag, often comical spoof of the Tchaikovsky masterpiece to a ragtag yet purposely comical spoof. The cast is amazingly talented, flexing a real passion for the often attempted, rarely perfected art of burlesque, while keeping accessible to audience newbies and folks teetering on the edge of comfort. It's not for everybody, though it really should be. Mouse Kings are sooo 2008. Open your mind, grab a group and catch the show this year. It's perfectly timed, staged in an amazing space and will easily coax you in to the world of burlesque, theater and dance. And giant, vibrating sex toys, I reckon. read more

The Slutcracker was great the first time I saw it in 2012, being the first burlesque show I had been to. I have been to a few more since (more "traditional" burlesque than a naughty ballet), and those were also a blast. Go into this expecting a lot of raunch. Don't bring someone who is a stick in the mud- they will have a terrible time, and probably never forgive you for toting them along. This wasn't my first Slutcracker. Not my last, either. This is a parody of the Nutcracker, which, if you're unfamiliar, is a ballet. Ballets don't have complex story lines. They don't have intricate plots or clever dialog. They have set-ups and dance sequences. If you've never seen the Nutcracker, or a ballet, watch the Slutcracker with an open mind. And don't expect the Slutcracker to conform to your idea of a comedy or a movie. This is a parody of a very famous, very traditional ballet. The setup is that it's Christmas and a young girl, Clara, is gifted a nutcracker doll by a mysterious uncle-figure, Drosslemeyer. There's a house party, after which, like children everywhere, she's sent to bed to await the magic of Christmas. But after the guests are gone, she sneaks back into the living room where the toys come to life and the tree grows ten times its original height, all abetted by a version of the mysterious Drosslemeyer. That's act one. Act two has almost no plot. It continues as a dream sequence, where dolls of varying nationalities -- Spanish, Japanese, Russian -- and sugar faries and flowers -- come to life, but it is, like all ballets, really just a chance to dance. If you ask it to make sense, you're missing the point. The Slutcracker follows this pattern closely, with minor alterations to Tchaikovsky's music for comedic effect and some character substitutions. For example, instead of a young girl, Clara, the central character is a young woman just engaged. And the nutcracker doll is replaced with a dildo. Which also comes to life. Duh. The worst kind of reviews are the ones that complain because a North End eatery doesn't serve tacos, and tacos are what you really wanted. If you don't know ballet, or dance, or burlesque, don't review it as though you wish this were a Godspell or Once Upon a Mattress. It's not. The Slutcracker is a bawdy parody of a sentimental ballet. It bills itself as a burlesque, which means lots of t-n-a. And humor. If you fear sex or nakedness, this is not for you. That being said, the production values are amazing. Maybe not Wang, but certainly clever and pleasing. The play off the original ballet is hilarious. It's clear they know what they're doing. I laughed all the way through, at least when I wasn't sighing with the pleasure of revelation. The Shibari sequence approaches art -- the tension, the precision, the evoking of the power relationship, the affection, the play. It's all there, but gentle and beautiful. There's also the raunch, the vamping, the sheer celebration of the human body in all its perfect imperfection, the strength of the pole dancer, the hoopla of the hula hoops, and more pasties than snowflakes in Somerville. read more

Makes about as much sense as the original Nutcracker only twice as fun. We had no idea what to expect but decided to send our 2017 off with a bang at the New Year's Eve performance of the slutcracker. The show was founded by a woman who was rejected by the Boston ballet for gaining too much weight and, after carrying this grudge for several years, decided to take things into her own hands and form a troupe of her own. Don't come expecting a scene for scene spoof. Don't come for stereotype-breaking ballet dancers. Don't come for good clean fun. But do come for an anything-goes-night if debauchery and laughs. It's a safe space performance so you'll see people of all body types and genders perform at all dance levels. It was inventive, fun, and probably one of the best crowds too. Notice how everyone who gives this show a good review is basically congratulating themselves for being so cool and edgy? Yeah. Not good. Stay away. I've never, ever seen a group of performers pat themselves on the back so much for such a lackluster show. I was excited to see the show; I expected a burlesque because it's called "The Slutcracker: A Burlesque." It's not a burlesque. It's not a comedy (well, certainly not funny), and it's not completely a ballet either. It fails at everything it tries to do, and hard. There are always at least three audience members willing to validate incredibly unfunny lowest-common-denominator penis jokes with a loud "Whoo!" so maybe the cast gets the misconception that they're doing something entertaining. Is this supposed to be edgy and groundbreaking? Two women fighting over a vibrator (A vibrator??? OMG LMFAO!!!) is not just, automatically hilarious to me. A giant statue of a dildo, similarly, is not automatically hilarious to me. The fact that you built a giant dick for a prop doesn't excuse you from dancing well. I wanted to see a slutty, sexy version of the Nutcracker. Guess I came to the wrong place. There are some very attractive ladies in the show, but nothing remotely sexy even happens until Act 2. And, all the times that something hot FINALLY starts happening, the scene ends like 4 seconds later. Why don't they just do hot stuff the whole time? It seems like the main thing that makes this show "slutty" is their repeated use of dildo metaphors. It's not the Slutcracker, it's the Dildocracker. Why are their drag queens dancing amidst actual hot ladies? That's neither hot nor funny. It's confusing. And one BBW would've been sufficient to bring home the "yay everyone is beautiful" point; two was excessive. The whole show is just a giant exercise in the gay/theatre community patting itself on the back. The show ends in a super long, extended curtain call. Then they do...another curtain call. Wow, guys. You do not deserve ten minutes of bowing for this nonsense. Not hot. Not funny. Mediocre choreography. And why is it all so gay? It would've been one star all the way...+1 more star for the amazing 3 minutes of pole dancing that randomly happens in the middle of it. Very tall, sexy, talented pole dancer. Affectionately nicknamed The Slutcracker, this recurring holiday show is more formally known as The Slutcracker: A Burlesque. It recently finished its third season, at its home in the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square. According to the flyer inserted in the program booklet, the Boston Ballet was concurrently running a related production, offering discounted admission to attendees of the Slutcracker. The idea is that if you liked the Slutcracker, you'll love what they're calling "The Nutcracker." Given your cultural background knowledge of the Slutcracker -- and, really, who hasn't been part of a high school production or heard the venerable strains of the original score in Macy's while holiday shopping -- you can probably guess what the Boston Ballet has done to adapt it for children. From what I gather, they turn the adult protagonist, Clara, into a young girl; her boyfriend/fiancé Fritz is turned into her brother; the eccentric-yet-oh-so-worldly-wise Auntie Drosselmeyer is replaced by some godfather figure; rather than the large pink dildo that later turns into a man-sized vibrator that chases off the oafish Fritz and leads Clara through the all-too-well-known dream sequence of varied sexual fantasies, Clara instead receives a "nutcracker" painted to look like a toy soldier (I know, there's not a lot they could do with the name "slutcracker"). This "nutcracker" also comes to life, chases off a completely invented "Mouse King," and then leads Clara on a tour of the world's desserts -- which actually sounds okay assuming they hand out samples after the show. Maybe I'll try to make it next year. But seriously, folks. The Slutcracker is a smart re-theming of the original Nutcracker, using all the same music and proceeding scene-by-scene.( One effect of this is that there are a lot more ensemble pieces than might be expected going by the more familiar burlesque paradigm of the striptease-ending-in-a-big-reveal.) The choreography was great -- it was no surprise to learn that lots of people trained in "real" dance are involved in the show -- and the elaborate costumes and props looked gorgeous on the Somerville Theatre's restored proscenium stage. There was also a lot of real burlesque talent on display (or on semi-display, as the law requires); the director of the local Babes in Boinkland troupe is the brains/brawn/inspiration behind the Slutcracker. The whole thing was brilliant and light-hearted. It's certainly raunchy fun, but there was nothing creepy about it. As a matter of fact, at the show I attended, some endearing couple got engaged at the beginning before the curtain went up (or maybe this happened at more than one show? -- in any case, I know I will be popping the question this way, should I ever pop it -- "it was so romantic, Grams. Well, we were having dinner at a really nice restaurant, and then, just before dessert came out . . ."). As the cast member supervising the engagement remarked, let The Slutcracker's beneficent effects upon the institution of marriage be known. I bought tickets for our group online, printed them out in the comfort of my own home, and brought them to the theater -- very convenient. Wow, uh, ok...where do I even begin? The crazy old woman, the pleather pants, or the enormous glowing vibrating dildo that comes to life? The Slutcracker is a twist on the traditional Nutcracker. Same music, same general plot, with a few alterations that make it uniquely Slutcracker-esque. I won't ruin the surprises, but just imagine a whole lot of burlesque, nudity, ballet, pole dancing, glitter, pleather, and sexual innuendo. I mean, if that doesn't define the holiday season for you, I DON'T KNOW WHAT DOES. Don't assume this is just a whole bunch of half naked people running around to the soundtrack of The Nutcracker, there's a lot of humor as well. I do think it's a show you have to attend not expecting the same kind of pristine dance skills and refined artistry as you find in The Nutcracker--in fact, don't really compare the two at all. Otherwise, you may find yourself disappointed. While most of the cast has dance experience, but they are no prima ballerinas, so just go into it with an open mind and you'll have a blast. read more

Was not a fan of the show. It was comparable to a High School production at best. The dancing and acting were sloppy and, even the story line lacked in terms of comedy. The MC of the night was very good and was great about getting people amped up for the show before it began, but this is really the only good thing I can say about the show. I feel like I watched, naked out of shape, talentless people run around the stage for two hours. There is no dialog so you would think that the dancing would have to be the actor's strong suit, but it was just a mess. The show was an excuse for people to be on stage with pasties and not have to call it a strip club. Wouldn't recommend seeing this show, there are plenty of other shows to see in Boston that will far surpass this experience. I would recommend going to see the Cirque Du Soleil show Zoomanity if you like this sort of edgy sexually charged shows. read more

Though I am glad I went, I didn't like it. I see a lot of theatre and many in the audience seemed to really be enjoying themselves, maybe I'm a snob. Clara was great- very talented, but some of the other dancers were horrible and I felt they were there simply because they were willing to do it. It was distracting from the dancers with talent. I saw the Slutcracker on December 13, 2014 at the Somerville Theater, seated on the second floor balcony, towards the left side of the theater. My 4-star rating is for the show itself, which I very much enjoyed. If I were to send a personal note to the producers of the show, it would be to put a camera on the *audience* for a couple of showings. It's clearly visible when people can't see what's happening on a certain area of the stage, because we sit up, lean forward, and start swaying to get a clear line of sight. If you continue to use the Somerville Theater as a venue, adjust where the dancers are on the stage so people don't have to shift to see what's going on. Also, please don't continue to use the Somerville Theater as your venue. With that out of the way, I turn my attention to the show. Having read the reviews here, I went in with low expectations. I expected unskilled dancers or actors and "High school" production quality. What I got was an interesting blend of "what the hell am I watching?" and "Oh my god, that's awesome!" Almost all of the props are cheap and tacky, including the "bar" and the cups that are used through the show. I can understand why people might associate this with low production value, but I beg you to pay attention to the costumes before making that judgement. The costume of the Flemenco dancer is elaborate and beautiful, and there are several scenes where coordinated actions remove pieces of clothing or ribbon in time with the music. Those outfits are not cheap or tacky, and the majority of the dancers (up to 10 in some parts) were in lock step, lending to a very smooth scene. Only when I think about it in reverse do I realize how complicated some of those costumes are, and the fact that I didn't notice it while watching tells me that *a lot* of effort was put into getting it right. Meanwhile, one of the main characters (I'm not saying it's the dildo, but it's totally the dildo!) is wearing what might well be a pink spray-painted dollar store decoration on his head, adorned with copious amounts of glitter. This is not "low production value". This is an artistic decision about how to portray a hyper-exagerated, anthropomorphized sex toy. The real story is between the male lead and the female lead which is introduced in the beginning of Act I, and resolved at the end of Act II. Other than those scenes, the entire show is about fantasy, so it makes sense to me that an inanimate object would be both bedazzled and goofy. It's *intentionally* tacky and absurd, and that's kind of the point. For the record, the dancer playing The Dildo flops and wobbles well enough to put *any* jelly dong to shame, and I consider this a triumph of casting. The cast is a great cross-section of body types, and some people will consider a portion of the crew "unattractive". A tall, black, male lead will not (and I think by nature, can not...) be attractive to all viewers, but neither can a short, pale, female lead. You have to cast a wide net, because people are into different things. The Slutcracker hits the mark there. I feel the same was done with gender. I'm specifically recalling one routine where several dancers with similar build and costume come out to low lighting, and as the lighting increases and the dancers face the crowd, one of the dancers is male. The reveal was humorous, but the rest of the routine treating him as "a dancer in a routine" was refreshing in hindsight. I was almost waiting for the over-the-top humor seen in some drag performances, but it never came, and that made it more fun. As is true with all things, I do have some criticsms. In Act I, the lighting was used well, and the performers froze when not lighted. This didn't seem to continue for the rest of the show, and near the end, I could hear performers off-stage cheering and yelling to actors on-stage. Shaded actors were shaking hands, smiling, and nodding and I wasn't sure if this was part of the performance or a flaw in it. Additionally, the "Energizer Bunny" was visible to me, in costume, for most of the show on a private balcony. I might normally ignore this, and write it off as something that shook my sense of disbelief, but it's outright jarring to see a costumed character "in the audience" when costumed characters *actually* interact with the audience as part of the show. Again, it diverted my focus, and was confusing. read more

I feel a little bad giving this iconic show just 3 stars, but I just couldn't get into it. There were definitely some highlights in the show, but there was also a lot of moments that made me cringe. People tripping on props, falling out of their stripper heels and just some odd moments. I can tell that a lot of work goes into the production of this show, but there are a few acts that need some improvement. If all the acts were as good as the whip girls (is that the proper name?!) then it would be 5+ stars. It was alright. For a long running show with a month of sold out performances, the actual production (staging, design) seemed underwhelming and a little thrown together. Theres a definite charm to amateur performers of all kinds giving it their all, which I certainly enjoyed and had noted favorites I did not expect, but why not surround them with more spectacle? You can subvert traditional stage scenery too! It was a little strange to stare at an unexplained Pinterest page (for some reason?) for an hour and then a curtain for another hour. Perhaps I focused on these things because I was in the balcony and that was about all I could see anyways. Certainly worth seeing, certainly worth showing up earlier, but maybe I wouldn't have dressed up. read more

Heard only great things about this performance and I have to say there were good parts to it. However overall I found no greatness really. I liked act 2 much better than act 1 and I thought the pole performance piece very artistic. I would have liked the acting to be more authentic and the transitions a lot more choreographed. I was reminded of Peep Show (las Vegas) and how great that was. I see greatness to be had here as well with a little more development. read more

I joined "YELP" to write this review after seeing how many positive reviews this show received, I had to add my experience. First and foremost, I went to the show last night (12/20/14) with the hopes of seeing a Burlesque show (as stated in the name). I went with an eclectic group of 14 people, myself, my husband, friends who are straight, gay, lesbian, married and single. The general consensus ... it was "just ok". I can appreciate where the creator was trying to go with it but unless you're mind is adolescent enough to think that "dry humping" and "leg spreading" is hilarious, then you'd also be inclined to say it was "just ok". The venue sucks, in plain English. The seats are NOT assigned & knowing this we obviously got there an hour early so our group could sit together but the seats are very low to the ground and not comfortable. Regardless of the venue, I can say I wouldn't recommend the show at all. I think everyone gets caught up in the "I'm a bad ass because I went to a show called The Slutcracker" mentality to really review what they were watching. Dancers worked hard, but yes I agree with the "High School Performance" reviews on here as well. Costumes were ok but nothing amazing.The show claims to be 2 hours long, it was not. The first act was about 40 minutes, intermission was 25, the second act also around 40 minutes. (I was happy it was over). In my opinion, getting a group of friends and head to a high end adult strip club, would be more entertaining. One "pole dance" and girls with pasties on their nipples does not constitute a Burlesque Show. read more

We have been to other Nutcracker-themed burlesques before (yes, this is a thing), but Slutcracker really exceeds. First, the production values are wonderful; great use of props in ways that will keep you giggling. Second, they have really stayed close to the source material; you can clearly identify the themes of the original fairy tale and who's who. Third, they stayed close to the source material in another way, namely that this is really done in a ballet style. Folks spend a fair amount of time en pointe, doing pirouettes and lifts, and flowing with the other dancers in a way that evokes a more traditional ballet. Guess what? That's HARD. Almost every number includes feats of serious physical skill. Fourth, this is a very body-positive and gender-positive burlesque. You'll see men dancing female roles (I don't think I saw the reverse), and men and women of basically every body type. It's not that I would let my child come see this (they're not kidding about over-21), but if she did, I'd at least be able to talk with her about the message that everyone can be/feel beautiful. I'm not sure how much the show changes year to year, but there's enough going on on stage that we'll probably catch it again in 2015 to get the bits we missed. Oh, and did we mention it's in a theater that sells microbrews you can drink at your seat? Double bonus. read more

I've been attending The Slutcracker since 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Until 2018. The Slutcracker has been edited, such that the Bacchanalia was not performed, nor did Clara arouse the large candy-cane edifice to completion! Perhaps now that The Slutcracker has partnered with Ticketmaster, the show has had to be less raunchy? Also, the choice for Drosselmeyer did little to arounse my interest. The show itself was just ok, kind of the cliche "sex toys are funny" type thing, maybe more alcohol would have made it more funny? The dancing was meh, the acting was meh, overall was like a high school performance. My problem is with the seating, we arrived a little early and were told we had to sit on the balcony. You literally cannot see ANY of the stage from the balcony (see pic attached). I was so baffled! then I noticed everyone was craning their necks in every direction or sitting on coats to catch a glimpse of the stage. I'm not even exaggerating when I mean I had to fold the movie seat up and sit on top of it to see any part of the show...which me and my butt weren't happy about. I emailed the show to show them pictures and ask what was up with this for $25 tickets, and 2 weeks later still no reply. So overall, id skip this. read more

This is the second year in a row I've attended and I brought two friends along this time who had never seen it. Suffice to say they were both shocked, awed, and in fits of laughter by the end of it. I've never seen the "real" Nutcracker performance so I can't say how closely the storyline resembles it. But I also knew going into it that it was its own unique production. I really had no expectations other than the rave reviews I've heard over the years. It's raunchy, it's funny, and it's a reasonably-priced way to spend an evening. Anyone leaving bad reviews about how disappointed they are in it clearly didn't do any research beforehand. You can easily go to the website and read the descriptions, the reviews, and see some photos in the gallery. There's no excuse to be an uninformed asshat. Also, it's not Broadway. So get off your high horse and keep an open mind. I certainly wouldn't have the balls to get up on stage and work my ass off like that. So I applaud the actors in their dedication to working with the budget they have in the Somerville Theater. read more

So you'll see from the date that I am writing this BEFORE the 2014 season has even started. I went both in 2013 and 2012 on Christmas Eve, and 10 months later I'm getting ready to buy tickets to go again this year. It obviously stuck with me, and I had a wonderful time both years. I saw this with my husband, and I'm hoping to take a friend this year from out of town. Everything about this was just down right fun. From a preshow that gets the audience all riled up, to little jokes all the way through to a bunch of dancers who look like they are having an amazing time. I think the skill level comments are a little too harsh, and if $25 bucks a ticket is too much for this show, I think you're just being whiny. In terms of seating, I am 5'3. I don't have any more trouble here than I have at every other theater, stadium, etc. anywhere in the world. At the end of the day, this is a sex-positive, empowering show that I really enjoyed. I would compare the mood in the audience to something along the lines of a good Rocky Horror Picture Show crowd. I love how this show is both faithful to the Nutcracker and at the same time completely turns it on its head. read more
