During COVID we were removed from the chaos and drama, because DaySpring students are used to self-direction and independent work. Isn't that the point of education? DaySpring offers flexibility, respect for families and family time, and a homey environment in contrast to factorylike government-run schools. Students are treated as individuals rather than inmates. It has far less conformity and bullying than what manifests in public/private schools. Teachers and staff LOVE the kids and they LOVE what they do. DaySpring cannot be all things for all people, but it is more tolerant and inclusive than other education contexts and more professional than co-ops. DaySpring was a pioneer in the bleak landscape of few educational choices, and we have been so thankful for the support that DaySpring has given my children and family!

The facilities are excellent and Susie Shelton-Dodge is the Headmistress and is wonderful and very approachable. They do have before and after school care which is included in tuition. They participate in numerous field trips. The menu in the cafeteria also has very healthy items. The summer camp is also wonderful with numerous fun activities but my favorite part of summer camp is the swimming lessons. They do have a very nice swimming pool on campus (fenced) and teach swimming every day during the summer. Lessons are dependent on ability and age. There is even parent observation day at the end of the summer. No this place isn't cheap but well worth the money. These kids tended to be from affluent families and made fun of his clothes or shoes. There became more concerning issues when one child was being threatening towards the children in the class. When we expressed concern the teacher became defensive of the other child and it became very uncomfortable after we had built what I thought was a good report. I found out later that the teacher was close with the other family and even went on a ski trip with them. The director also showed little concern for these more serious issues. I also had to address the fact that my daughters class never washed with soap and water but used hand sanitizer instead. Both of my kids would express that the wrong kids were often disciplined and others got away with whatever they wanted. Every day I asked them how school was and they had nothing good to report sadly. It was hugely disappointing for the amount of money spent there.

They're welcoming of kids from LGBTQ families, as well as families of any faith. It's not as fancy as the other daycares that we toured, but it's a such a wonderful team of teachers, administrators, and families. They have been proactive and caring. They have excellent outdoor spaces, music, and art. The parking lot is also good for drop off and pick up. First Steps has been able to do PT, OT, speech and vision on-site at Good Shepherd. Our First Steps people have been welcomed into the classroom and they have excellent separate spaces for when distractions are an issue. They also coordinate our insurance for services in addition to what is provided through First Steps. We get great reports from our therapists about our kids' experiences in the classrooms.
