St. Louis Language Immersion School

St. Louis Language Immersion School

I totally disagree with the earlier review (which is also two years old at this point). SLLIS is a…read moreunique school with a bold vision. As such, in the early years, some parents (usually those with more of a customer service expectation mindset) didn't understand that, as a relatively new charter school with such a special model and mission, there is a learning curve in terms of institutional operations and processes. Personally, we are perfectly willing to support to that evolution (which has been totally positive) in exchange for the important benefits that this school offers. We chose The French School at SLLIS because we want our child to be not just conversationally proficient in a foreign language but academically literate and culturally competent. Our son (9) speaks, reads, and writes in two languages and is developing multi-disciplinary critical thinking skills promoted through the International Baccalaureate inquiry-based pedagogy model. We also value the diversity of the student population for our child's social development and readiness for the "real world." The teachers have a truly unique professional skill set and competence that you won't find anywhere else in St. Louis, and the entire faculty, staff, and leadership team is wholly dedicated to the success of our kids and the school. We love it. Highly recommend!

The policies are not enforced. The school is very behind by means of their curriculum and don't have a program in place for gifted students. Be very weary!

I've checked out Alliances in 3 different cities now, and this is hands down the best one that I…read morehave visited. This community is so vibrant and jam-packed with activities and events: classes, book clubs, movie clubs, wine tastings, speaker events, parties ... you name it. They offer classes that cover the whole spectrum of experience levels, with beginners classes that start students from scratched and advanced courses that have students engaging in political debate. Most of the classes are 6-week sessions and cost $174, which is such a steal when considering the breakdown of university courses (mine came out to be $50+ a class based on tuition and class hours). I'm a fan of the "casse-croutes," which are $10 lunch classes that run from 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. and are scheduled throughout the week and have different themes (music, current events, etc.) They operate on a drop-in basis, so they're good for people who have unpredictable schedules like me and can't commit to the regular courses. They have 2 book clubs, one that finishes a book each month, and another that reads at a more leisurely pace. These meetings are free for members! The Alliance also offers DELF testing and private instruction. Plus, they have a library of books that members can borrow from and peruse. Awesome place. Great community. Really wonderful cultural center. Note that they are closed on Fridays!

Alliance moved from its old location behind House of India on Delmar Blvd. to its new building at 930 N. McKnight Rd (at the corner of Old Bonhomme Rd) at the end of March 2017. The new location is formidable with more space for events and more classrooms.
