My husband and I usually make it to Coal Docks a few times per summer for breakfast. The outside of the restaurant doesn't look like much, but the inside is welcoming. The décor features old photos, postcards, and maps from around Jefferson County. There is a good selection of breakfast items, with a "lighter side" and a la carte items available. I usually order the make your own frittata (choose your own veggies/meats) which comes with potatoes, a slice of toast, and a side of fruit. Husband is a big fan of the breakfast burrito. Don't expect diner prices because the food is good quality and well portioned, and you won't be hungry 30 minutes later. I've never been disappointed with a meal here, though we've only had breakfast. I wish they'd offer a few more meatless options for lunch and dinner. Service is always friendly but can be a little slow at times if there is just one server. Luckily it's a nice place to hang out and drink an extra cup of coffee. At the register you can purchase sweets, biscuits, or bread, depending on the day. Sometimes there is local honey or other interesting stuff for sale too. One last note: Coal Docks has been closed randomly when their hours state that they're open. I highly suggest following them on Facebook to keep up on closings and daily specials. read more

Fabulous breakfast here this morning! Enjoyed wonderful food, great service and a cozy dining room with a fireplace. First time visitors and it won't be our last! Husband enjoyed the sausage gravy over biscuits with scrambled eggs. I had one of their specials, which was a bacon spinach tomato quiche with hollandaise sauce and toast. Very good and their homemade bread is amazing! Also split their breakfast potatoes and they are prepared nice and thin and very yummy. Been there twice now one lunch and one breakfast both times we had a pleasurable experience. I definitely enjoyed their breakfast special the morning we were there some French toast, scrambled eggs, sausage, home fries was delicious. The place is a little bit more upscale than other restaurant choices in the Cape. Pricing is little bit more than other places but the quantity and quality of the food is well worth it. Service was on point and the Decour of the place was very interesting loved all the different pictures and theme. They do have a little bit of a gift shop and they do carry some of the local products made in the area. Also they do have a outdoor patio we will have to find some time to check that out. We understand that they have some great dinner dishes, everyone in town taking about. Stopped for breakfast and had the apple crisp stuffed French toast with sausage wow how yummy. I want to update my review today from 12 months ago. Last night my wife and I had dinner here, and I can confidently say that their Seafood Pasta they had as a special was the best I have ever eaten. If I had only the sauce and pasta it would have been incredible, but the seafood that was added creates the ultimate experience of flavor. Absolutely an incredible meal. My wife had the prime rib which she enjoyed very much and of course I had a bite and it was cooked perfectly and tender. If you eat dinner at one place in town, this should be your first choice. I will be having breakfast this week there, I am sure they will not disappoint since they were excellent last year as well. read more

Don't drive by without stopping in for a home cooked meal. The inside feels incredibly cozy. The live piano music was so enjoyable. Marcie the owner, treated me like a member of her family and helped me customize a meal I could eat with my dietary restrictions. The French onion soup was amazing, the salads were fresh, the pot roast tasted better than mom's and the flat iron steak was so tender. Now on to desserts - the chocolate cream pie had a homemade crust. We are bringing home slices of the double chocolate cake and carrot cake. We also picked up fresh bread and baked goods. We've been here twice. Great food! Great service! The first time I had the fried perch dinner and my husband had the crab cake. The second time I had the fried haddock dinner and my husband had the crab cake. Both meals came with rolls and two sides. We both ordered the tossed salad and macaroni and cheese. The perch was delicious. The haddock was good. The macaroni and cheese was outstanding. My husband raved about the crab cake and liked it so much he ordered it the second time we visited. Both times we were there I ordered a piece of the chocolate ganache cake to go (as we were too full for dessert while we were there). It's scrumptious!!! Soooooo good. Even with the drive from Watertown, this is our favorite place to have breakfast on the weekends. Great service and the food and service are always really solid. We've been here once for lunch and it was good, but the breakfasts have been really stellar. read more

The food here was amazing when we went there on vacation. A nice cozy restaurant with friendly staff. The food is amazing. They have a great fresh perch dinner on Friday that cannot be beat. Went out for what I was expecting to be another wonderful meal at the Coal Docks. Was I disappointed. Chicken Parmesan was on the menu, yum right. WRONG. First I couldn't figure out where the chicken was, then I couldn't figure out if it was cooked. I was told it was pounded chicken breast, then why was it brown why did it taste funky and why was it mushy. It turns out it was made with chicken thighs. Oh and it was cold. This is a great new little restaurant. My family's favorite restaurant that we go to all the time unfortunately closed, so now we're looking for a replacement. This is probably it. I love the blend of nautical and country decor, that's usually what all the restaurants have down here. When you first enter there's a gift shop and a fresh baked goods scattered around. Love all the customers drawings, old photos, and Broadway playbills that are in the table tops. I might draw something for them. I ordered oatmeal, fruit, and toast. Very delicious, reasonably priced. The toast is made from homemade bread that they have here, that was the best part. This place is always a great experience. The portobello steak dish is my favorite. The breakfast menu is amazing. Home made toast is a must.

Great atmosphere, great service and absolutely wonderful food. Prices are reasonable. The only reason why I gave four stars is because of the lack of hours the restaurant is actually open and the inconsistency in those hours. The times change so frequently. This, like a popular Chaumont restaurant, seems to be more of a hobby than an actual business concerned with the convenience of the customer. Having said this, if you can make it while they are actually open you won't be disappointed. read more

We've enjoyed take-out and in-person from Coal Docks (somewhat limited seating inside due to COVID regulations) this summer, and have been very, very happy each time. The food is flavorful, and all dishes seem to have a unique twist or ingredients that makes even normal fare fun (poutine skillets, ruben fish-fry, fun potato options, and more). Our fish dishes from last night were especially good and we even had leftovers! Service is always solid, and even the younger servers are responsive and know how to keep the customers happy - well done! I ordered a breakfast burrito and the owner came to my table and told me she saw it in the kitchen and didn't like the look of it, so she had them remake it and comped my breakfast. Went for dinner last night and breakfast this morning. We have NEVER had a bad meal there and today was no exception! Wait staff is awesome!! Krista and Joanne are the best!!! Had the seafood Mac and cheese and enchilada last night and it was the best Mac & cheese ever!!! My friend went a bit heavy on the Tabasco on her enchilada and Joanne was awesome about making sure we had water and extra napkins to handle the heat!!! This morning I had the stuffed French toast. The bread was so soft and it was stuffed with lemon ricotta cheese! Delish! My friend had the breakfast burrito (again with the Tabasco haha) and it was so soft and cheesy! Awesome!! Coal docks is fantastic! Such a charming atmosphere and incredibly friendly staff. My fiancée (then girlfriend) has celiac disease and when we told the waitress, she brought out the owner - who was very friendly and talked to us at length and assured us the food would be prepared very carefully to avoid cross contamination. My family attempted to eat here today at around 2 pm. Their marquee said "open all day." Then inside, the hostess asked us how many were in our party (4), got menus, and informed us that they were closing for 20 minutes because they'd just had a rush of costumers. This Restaurant is spotless and masks mandatory which made me feel safe and comfortable! After visiting the Coal Docks I felt the need to write this review. We were slightly apprehensive after reading a previous post of potentially being treated odd die to having kids. I am so glad we took the review with a grain of salt. The entire staff including both owners were amazing with our children! They really went out of their way to ensure the kids were cared for just as much as we were and the s was all right at the start of the dinner rush. And now for the food, it is fantastic! I had the seafood platter and everything on it was delicious! The fried clams we're gigantic and the haddock was light, fluffy, and flavorful. We also had the poutine, crab cakes, and prime rib. I went there for the 1st time tonite. Fried haddock was the best on the river stretch. The service was the greatest. I would have giving it 5 star if the bread for the table was fresh. This place was absolutely a waste of time. Came here due to it being recommended for being vegetarian friendly.... Maybe their regular menu is but not today for the French Fest. They simplified the menu and then gave us a hard time for asking for a cheese burger without meat. Then we ordered a cheese pizza and they legit brought us a little caesars pizza! One i can buy from little caesars for 5 dollars but they charged me twice that. read more

Made a reservation a couple days ago for tonight. Got to the restaurant a bit early so we took a look at the menu in the case outside. The fact that the light fixture in the case was hanging by a wire and the case was dirty and full of bihs should have been a clue. When we went inside, I gave the hostess my name and let her knoww that the another couple was joining us but had not yet arrived. After a few minutes the hostess told me she could not find a reservation in my name and tthat they were completely booked. We left and will not be back until the ownership changes.
