Guess what? I really, really used Yelp to find this restaurant. Took our granddaughter to a…read morevolleyball camp, dropped her off and needed to eat before driving back to KC. Yelp to the rescue. What a place, down in the old part of town, old old building, in great condition, Menu was complicated, lots of choices and if I had time I would have tried them all. Patty Melt, french fries, onion rings. Wife had a mushroom swiss burger. Concierge was so helpful with the "deals " and seated us with all the info we needed. Looking forward to next year's volleyball camp.

This time, at least, the service was impeccable and the hamburger was so delicious it hit the spot. I had been in the mood for a slightly charred burger and, in particular, from a non-chain restaurant in some smaller town or area. So, I suggested that we go to Warrensburg and visit that restaurant we ate at many moons ago. The restaurant was quiet when we arrived, so about 5 PM on a Wednesday, and not many people. The only aspect (and this is not the restaurant's issue) that seemed sad was that I mistook a homeless person in the bathroom for an inebriated person from their bar. I later learned that, sadly, Warrensburg receives a small population of these people from Kansas City, which buses them here. Anyhow, that is a side story. My husband ordered the Warrensburger (cute name, btw) and I ordered a Mushroom with Monterey Jack. Both burgers were charred to perfection. He ordered fries, and I ordered a baked mashed potato casserole (I get tired of fries) and unfortunately it wasn't warmed all the way, but it also had way too much black pepper, which I can't have. The waitress wasn't only accommodating and understanding, but made it a point to apologize, and shared apologies from the cook. I told her that there wasn't any need, and that she was very kind. She stepped it up and graced me with a fully loaded baked potato--no issues. Overall, the service, food, and everything here was fantastic and I don't suspect I will wait another twenty years again to visit.

I say that so people don't get upset when I say, Players Restaurant is located in the middle of nowhere, but it's in a safe nowhere! Pulling up was an exciting moment as my oldest daughter was graduating first in her class, a year early from high school and I hadn't seen her in a year. That said, I walked in about 4pm and almost no one was there. I asked the bartender if I could sit in the main room instead of the bar and she was cool with it. Players looks like a sort of Applebees with "crap" all on the walls but upon closer inspection, the photos are of local people. This tells me it's an authentic experience which I gained a much fuller appreciation. My daughters both said they liked the food there, and I was about to meet "the boyfriend" so I was anticipating the encounter. He walked in and I immediately made fun of him to put him at ease (my daughter warned him that I used to do standup) so the vibe was very nice. Next the waitress came over and was so vibrant and courteous that I was impressed. Now, I really liked a lot of menu items I saw but I wasn't that hungry. Again, I'll bring this back later, but could this "redneck restaurant" really make good Saganaki (Greek cheese) and Calamari? Needless to say, I was extremely skeptical however my sweet tea arrived and was spot on. I even asked for NO lemon and she didn't put it in my glass. Forgive my doubts as I used to be a chef so I can generally spot a disingenuous effort before trying it. First up was the Saganaki which came over a burner. Wow, they got part of it right! As an aside, the cheese can be one of many types with Halloumi or a type of sheeps milk feta that's shallow fried. That said, and I hope they read this to add authentic zest to the experience, it needs to be flambeed and hit with a shot of lemon to offset the richness which very loudly proclaiming OPA! Aside from the theatrics it was extremely good and the warm pita was on the money! Next up I had already determined I was making a mistake ordering the calamari. Well, I was wrong again. The squid were perfectly fried and crispy lacking grease that most restaurants think is ok. Players hit it out of the park with my only addition being I would have liked an aioli with it otherwise the dish surprised me. My kids both got fettuccini alfredo with chicken. I tried two bites and found it was average. The sauce was somewhat bland with slightly overcooked pasta. I think most kids would love it but after people build up a good amount of knowledge with quality dishes, this one fell flat. I'm not saying it's bad, but I wouldn't order it. The pork tenderloin sandwich looked good but I didn't taste it. I was dumbfounded by the huge tenderized pork outsizing the bun 3 to 1 giving it the illusion of getting a lot for the money. My daughters boyfriend assured me it was good and wrapped up half to take home. To summarize my review shows that one should never go in with preconceived notions about a restaurant before trying it. Players proved me wrong more often that I'm willing to admit. The staff are very nice, the restaurant has soul, and the food overachieves. If you're in the area I will highly advise dropping by for what could be the best food in town.

Half a minute later Amanda returned with my drink (perfect Arnold Palmer) and a menu. She then gave me a few minutes to review the menu. Upon returning she asked if I had any question and inquired if I was ready to choose. Amanda was very knowledgeable polite and made thoughtful recommendations. Because this was my first visit I tried several different items to get the full experience. I started with a half pound Boudin Link, it was sensational. I was incredibly impressed that the Boudin was so delicious being so far away from Louisiana or Texas. I also ordered a half serving of red beans and rice with sausage, a half serving of jambalaya and a half shrimp Po boy. The Boudin came out first it was Cooked to perfection, exceptionally well flavored and served with a wonderful spicy remoulade. All of the dishes were very thoughtfully prepared, wonderful flavored, just the right amount of cajun flavors. The portions were huge even as half servings it was much more than I could eat. The cost was very reasonable and well worth it. While the meal was excellent, Amanda's attentiveness and genuine concern for customer satisfaction made it a perfect dining experience. I look forward to going there again and again.

See the crumbs in my basket they are not crumbs they taste like boiled canned oysters that at been breaded. They were tasteless and I keep eating one after the other hoping to get an oyster taste. All I could get was a greasy breading taste. You can also see the excessive grease in the basket too. Worst meal I've ever eaten. Plus it was expensive and this was the appetizer. The ambience was nice very festive and the waitress was kind. But the food was terrible I'm surprised they would even charge people for this. Left there sick from grease and I mean really sick and I kept belching oysters it was horrible.

I stirred the ice around a bit and realized there was scum floating in the bottom. I grabbed a server and sent it back. Asked to just have water. She happily brought me a water. Maybe 5 minutes later, some guy brought me a new peach tea and I said I had asked to just switch to water. He said the tea is fine "it's just sediment" I explained again, I don't want the tea, I'm fine with water. It wasn't sediment, it was like strips of goop, but I wasn't going to argue. The waitress then came back and said "they must not have cleaned the nozzle last night" which is more likely the culprit, although I'd guess they might not have cleaned it for more than one night for it to have goop caked on it that would come off in long strands. Then, the weird guy came back with a glass of water. It was weird. I'd shown him I had water when he brought the replacement tea. Even the table across from us mentioned how awkward it was.

She was also having to tend bar despite 3 managers (or ladies I'm assuming are managers) were walking around in a pack or sitting at the bar chatting. Definitely not the professionalism I'd expect to see when going out at a chain. Everything was slow largely because 1 or 2 hostesses and waitresses were doing everything while the apparent managers were doing nothing or chatting up bar patrons. Food was fresh and good. I'm mainly posting this not to dig on a local restaraunt but rather so upper management can see the poor staffing and management that was going on. I waited over 15 minutes just to pay so we could leave. I did not expect a trip to a mostly empty restaraunt on a Wednesday night to last almost 2 hours due to very slow service. Won't be back for a long while

Not the first time I was uncharmed with the manager's behavior so it became time for a review. I believe his nonresponsiveness last time to their plastic spoons consistently making my mouth bleed is what I distasted. Food itself -I got a spicy whopper- was peculiarly good this time. Shame. I actually joked with my dad before going that maybe after our countless bad experiences of them consistently messing up orders, dropping food, being apathetic, we could go just for the fun of seeing what they do next. I hear a lot of Burger Kings have been shutting down and I also hear a lot of negative impressions in Warrensburg about this one. If I were the franchisee, I would bail while I still can.
