I called the Clock Works because my clock's chimes/song was out of sync with the time - on the hour it only played 4 notes of the song, at 15 minutes past the hour it played 8 notes, etc. The gentleman I spoke to at the Clock Works told me how to reset it. Started with a phone call to Charles with questions about repairing two wall clocks. He very kindly offered me another option (a competitor) because they were closer to where we live/work. With his helpfulness in mind, I called the other repair shop but quickly decided that I'd prefer to do business with Charles than the gruff woman who maybe a few miles more convenient. Great decision!! Dropped our clocks off on Friday AM thinking it would be about $80 and about a week. Later that day, a voicemail from Charles- clocks are both ready. Less than half the time and half the cost!! Both clocks are home now and working perfectly. Great job, great experience! read more

Charles came out to our house to service our grandfather clock. After taking the mechanism out and performing some preliminary steps he said that the clock was beyond repair and then in explicit detail showed me exactly what was wrong and explained why he was unable to repair it. The main gear that he said usually lasts for 25 to 30 years was 40 years old and very worn, and was the one part that the manufacturer didn't make as a spare part. He manually rotated the mechanism to show how the worn gear was slipping, which was causing the clock to run so fast and the pendulum to barely swing back and forth. He also pointed out the other areas of the mechanism that would need to be replaced. After discussing the options available I decided a new mechanism was needed and Charles contacted his supplier to check on availability. He said that it would be a few days to get and a few days later he contacted us to set up a time that he could install the new mechanism. When he returned he showed me the differences between the two mechanisms and it was then very clear why the old one wasn't working correctly. After getting the clock back together Charles pointed out some things that I should be doing that I didn't know. Before he had a chance to escape I asked him to look at an old German mantle clock with a minor problem and an open frame clock that wasn't working. Within minutes both clocks were operational to my surprise. Overall, we were extremely impressed with Charles' knowledge of clocks and especially his ability to explain the inner workings to someone with no understanding of the workings of clocks. His fee was very reasonable and his ability to break down the complexities of mechanical clocks was masterful. read more

I am pleased to say that Charles did a great job making my grandmother clock like new again. It is very special to me because my father built it for me. I had not heard it chime correctly in over 10 years. Charles put all new inner workings in it in a very timely manner and did the work on site which I really appreciated. Sadly I need to give Clock Works (Charles) a less than average rating on his repair of my old clock. Charles is very knowledgeable about clocks, but unfortunately the repairs he made to my old clock worked only for a week and a few days before the clock stopped working altogether. Charles initially told me that the repairs would take a month or so. After a month, many phone calls and several emails requesting a status, he told me it wasn't done and that he would contact me when it was finished. After another couple of months, I started calling him again. Finally after over 4 months, Charles told me I could pick it up, which I did. The repair took over 4 months (Dropped off - May 2020, Picked up - October 2020). He gave me very detailed instructions on how to hang it and start it. That was great. The problem was that the clock worked only for a week and a few days and then stopped working. I let him know exactly what was happening with it (sent him several videos to show him what was happening), and he said he'd think about ("brainstorm") what could be wrong with it and give me a call back. Never heard from him. Very disappointing. He's a "nice guy" and very knowledgeable, but completely dropped the ball several times and never responded back to me after I told him my clock stopped working after only a week and a few days. I paid him in full ($310) for his services when I picked up my clock. I don't like to write bad reviews, but I'm extremely disappointed in Clock Work's repair and follow up. read more

Charles has been our home to clean our beloved grandfather clock. He is so knowledgeable about ALL clocks. I was very impressed. He also repaired a cuckoo clock that had been gifted to us. When he brought it back he told me all about my clock, where it was made, the figures on the clock that were hand carved and how to take care of my clock. I recently took two clocks in for service and general repair, one vintage mantle, and one German cookoo clock. The owner of this company does EXCELLENT work, and is definately "old school" as to patience, pride in his work, dedication to getting the job done perfectly, and just one heck of a kind gentleman. I used to go to the "other" big time clock company in the St. Louis area, and will never go back. They were just old bitties who took forever to get work done (I think they may have outsourced it). We were gifted a grandfather clock that stopped working. I have never had a clock that didn't require batteries so I had no idea what to do. He was a kind, knowledgeable, and patient man. He fixed the clock and walked me through how to maintain it. He's the kind of person you feel like you've known your whole life as soon as he walk in your house. Several years ago my Herschede grandfather clock that we have owned for about 35 years would not keep the correct time anymore. Charles came out and diagnosed that the time keeping mechanism needed to be rebuilt to fix the problem. He extracted the mechanism and took it to his shop for a rebuild. He then replaced the movement into the clock, reset everything and the clock ran perfectly again. Recently, the clock required maintenance oiling and occasionally would not chime correctly. Once again, Charles came out and did his magic on the clock and it runs perfectly again. Charles is an expert clock technician and can solve most problems to do with clock movements. What a ditz. Took forever to return and then it didnt work when I got it back... and he didnt care. As long as he gets your money... he's happy. Can possibly be trusted with simple spring driven movements... but definitely NOT COMPETENT ENOUGH TO BE TRUSTED WITH A VALUABLE OLD CLOCK! There are many other better options in St Louis. Seek them not this guy. read more
