Reet, now I know I have written a review for here before, but after a visit tonight with the wife…read moreagain, I felt like I had to come back on here and give it another review. I wasn't sure how I could beat my last trip there, or the 5000 trips before it, but tonight has been a blast... Let me paint you a picture (with my words of course).. As its my other half's birthday tomorrow, a few days ago I got a special offer through the post for a huge 25% off our bill, and a free bottle of house wine, clearly to encourage me to spend the her birthday there and reward me for my previous custom - but as its one of our favorite restaurants - lets just say we don't need much convincing! So we pulled up at about 5pm on a gorgeous Friday evening (tonight!) only to see the car park packed and wondered would we get seated - we goes in, and bless the girls that seated us, actually thought about where we were going to be sitting, and popped us on a table away from the other families in there with children (not that I have anything against kids at all!), but she recognized we were a couple having a meal together - so thoughtful and showed she thought about it! We sat on a table that wasn't on top of other ones and got down to ordering our food - oh and getting our complimentary bottle of wine - deeeelish!! Hmmmm, droool, the food... Chicken livers for the wife and duck spring rolls for me to start - crispy rolls, filled with duck and on an amazing sweet chilli sauce, she had livers that were meaty, cooked to perfection and almost melt in the mouth - in fact I am drooling AGAIN thinking about it now! Mains were fishcake for me, and slow roasted lamb with some ribboned pasta that has a name but I cant remember or spell it - anyway it was GAWGUS - meaty lamb, no fat, pasta cooked to perfection - oh my word I could go on but wont... Cos I will end up soaking the laptop... Service wise, very attentive, talking to us whilst taking our order but certainly not intrusive at all, knew there was a birthday when I had handed over the voucher for the free wine - I'll do anything for a free wine! - and took a real interest, asking whose birthday it was and wishing her a good un! I though this in itself was lovely but imagine my surprise when at the end of the meal the staff brought out an ice cream with a giant sparkler in it and sang Happy Birthday for her - aw it was a lovely touch and to be honest really made our night... I love this place and although people find it slightly more expensive, I don't, and I'm certainly not one to spend money without thinking about it. Its a complete you get more than what you pay for place, and for an evening meal like this I would have paid double - definitely a place to go!

The layout is spacious and relaxing, the food........what can I say but the best god damned food that I have had for a long time. The head chef has definitely got this right, great menu well balanced and put together, we have visited a number of times now and are hoping to get in for Xmas lunch. All I can say is next time you are in Rothwell look out for Salute and pay them a visit I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.

There was only one server who was nice and food came out quick and hot. The food was really good, but I did have to use the chili sauce to spice up my tofu Pad Thai. My husband ordered the stir fry with veggies and rice and he didn't find any soy sauce on the table as he's used to. Definitely a good late night find.

My friend and I went here a wee while back, and it's a fab little hole-in-the-wall spot. The menu has rather a lot to choose from, so if you're indecisive, prepare to scroll through a lot of delicious-sounding options. We started with the spring rolls, which I normally avoid as they can be boring, but these were crispy, oily perfection. The squid is also a must-order to start as it's perfectly fried in the lightest of salted batters. The egg fried rice with meat and veg was what I chose for a main and it was absolutely delicious. Everything was cooked beautifully and there was some kind of cured meat in with the rice -- tasted similar to chorizo but less spicy. I loved it! The prawns were perfect and the portion was spot on. The whole experience was low-key, chilled out, and perfect for a quiet, cheap, delicious bite out. I wouldn't call it date territory, but don't let that give the impression it's not worth a visit. Fantastic food.

Middle of nowhere, casual dress, Michelin-starred…read more My husband and I went out of our way to eat and stay here. Was it worth the 3 hour journey from London (2-hr train ride, 1-hr by car) to make our reservation from 6-months earlier? Absolutely. Courses are small, but plenty. Staff are immensely courteous and thoughtful (they made a custom menu for our dietary needs and even had the chefs sign it before we left). And the setting couldn't be more idyllic. I'd suggest getting the wine pairing as it really completes the meal. Go ahead and stay the night as breakfast is included the next day. Just make sure to work out your travel from the train station to the restaurant. It really is out in the sticks.

Make sure to make a small detour to Kilburn to see The Kilburn White Horse which stands firmly in the hillside. The Black Swan is a beautiful picturesque old pub full of warmth and charm. Upon arrival you are welcomed into the bar area for aperitifs where a log fire crackles and glows. Make sure to notice the Robert Thompson mouse carved into the bar. Great selection of small batch gins - I enjoyed a glass of Sir Robin of Locksley from Sheffield with tonic. Amuse bouche are served here before moving upstairs to the restaurant. The Smoked Eel and Apple Tartlets were light and well balanced in their flavours whilst the Chicken Dumpling was rich, satisfying and would sit well on the finest of dim sum plates in Hong Kong. The restaurant is more modern in decoration with an "open kitchen" where some of the dishes are prepared with a clear artistic love and attention to detail. Service is friendly, knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. Good selection of wines for most palates and wallets. I had the 10 course tasting menu which, at £85, felt like a bargain compared to the price of Michelin starred food in major cities. To start, a Mussel with Oyster Leaf canapé - so perfectly decorated that it felt wrong to eat it, but so tasty. Next up Langoustine with Caramelised Whey, served like a lollipop with a twig to hold it with - lovely textures and cooked to perfection. Venison Tartare followed - a small dish but rich in flavour and beautifully prepared and decorated. Sour Bread and Sour Butter was distinctive and a good filler in preparation for the main courses. The Monkfish with Asparagus and Onion, although delicious, was probably the weakest dish. The sauce tasted like heavy sweet soy sauce and was a bit overpowering in its saltiness for the delicate flavour of the fish. Still very enjoyable though. The Slowly Cooked Crapaudine Beetroot was the star of the menu. Cooked in beef fat (I believe), the beetroot takes on a heavier composition and is chewy and almost glutinous with all of the accompanying decorations providing broad and bold flavours. Absolutely fantastic! Scallop Cured with Rhubarb was another standout with the smoothness of the slightly charred scallops countering the tartness of the rhubarb, all tied together with a rich and balanced sauce. Herb-Fed Chicken with Wild Garlic from this Year and Last was another amazing creation with a blanket over the chicken in the form of a garlic leaf. The chicken was more warm than hot but extremely tasty. The first dessert was ice cream (or iced yoghurt?) Lollipops which were wonderfully innovative with their unique flavours. The Sheep's Milk with Douglas Fir Oil was also an memorable dessert with natural tastes of the season. The final dessert, served with coffee was Cake made from Artichoke, Chicory Root and Thyme. The combination worked well although the chicory root (?) was slightly bitter. A great end to a fantastic meal and experience. For most who visit The Black Swan at Oldstead, a significant journey will be involved but don't let that put you off...It's well worth the effort and will be one of those great food experiences.

We'd booked to go to a well know Yorkshire Chef's hotel on Sunday as a New Year treat but sadly,…read moredue to boiler problems! we had to forfeit our reservation. We were quite down in the mouth about this however had it not have happened we would not have had this opportunity to sample to delights of Leeds Seventeen! We had called ahead to check the serving time for lunch and booked in for 2.30. From the outside, you wouldn't be very blow away by this former pub however even from the entrance way it's apparent that time and planning were given to present the Restaurant well to customers. The informal bar area is cosy yet modern, a good selection of beers on the bar (with my particular favourite San Miguel) and nice cheery staff. We were seated straight away choosing to sit and order drinks rather than hover. The dining room had 2 large family groups seated yet there was plenty of other space. The Sunday menu is featured on a blackboard and had a good choice selection. We orded drinks and on return our food orders were placed- I was a bit cheeky in asking for 3 courses but 2 of them to be desserts! I really fancied a pudding & dessert- the waitress was amused and agreed. My Mr had a starter which was Duck terrine- it was presented really lovely but I'd say was more a pate than terrine as it was a smooth paste rather than coarse as you'd expect a terrine to be. He enjoyed it anyway as I tucked into the complimentary bread oil & balsamic. Our mains were the roasts of the day, his beef-mine chicken. I definitely made the better choice however neither was a poor choice. The meat, Yorkshire pudding & roast spuds were on one plate and a separate side dish of vegetables were provided. I'm a big gravy fiend so I asked for some more- little did I realise that the Yorkshire pud was full of gravy and when you cut into it- it then oozed all over the plate! My chicken was a pan fried chicken breast and the skin had been seasoned so it was both juicy and very tasty! The veg consisted of squash and swede which were nice and added a colour to the plate. Mr enjoyed the beef which he said was cooked well. Dessert was crème brulee and treacle sponge with the addition of the cheese board. As per the pics, they were all delightful! I loved the treacle sponge being served in the treacle tin- very nice touch. Lots of crackers were given with the cheese which is always a +! The bill was a mere £24 including drinks and i'd have certainly paid more. We were very impressed with the food & service here and will add it to our choice of Sunday lunch venues (and the normal al la carte menu looks good too!)

This place appeared to have a bit of an identity crisis when I first visited in September, or at least they did their best to confuse a little. They seemed to be going by two names - Leeds Seventeen (as in the post code) and Northern Soul Food, a gimmicky monicker that evokes images of a smokey jazz bar transplanted from New Orleans, it isn't. But I see what they're trying to do here. The Northern part because they've sourced nearly all their food locally; Whitby crab, Swaledale cheese, Dewsbury rhubarb and so on. The soul part tries to persuade us that it's not just some sweaty chef fighting flak in the kitchen and screaming obscenities at his minions; it's a master craftsman lovingly preparing and massaging your chargrilled steak before it arrives on your plate. I won't begrudge them the 'Northern Soul Food' thing, it's kind of there and there's a genuine interest in making sure you enjoy your visit. You might have accused them of taking the local produce idea to the extreme with Leeds produced wine sitting proudly on top of the wine list, but it's actually worth a try and very ameniable. It's over six months ago since I went but I do remember the food being well prepared and, importantly for a neighbourhood diner, substantial. You don't want to come home from work hungry, pop out for a quick bite to eat and come back still hungry do you? My steak, whose origins I can't quite remember, could not be faulted and my companions wolfed down their roast lamb loin and posh fish and chips. It all sounds like simple fare - it is but the dishes are also accompanied by the likes of sweet onion confit and smoked salmon lardons. Leeds Seventeen's signature desert, their treacle sponge is light, rich and served in a Tate & Lyle Golden Syrup tin - another gimmick but it does bring a smile to the face of those who are about to receive. This is my nearest eaterie but I haven't been back yet; this is no reflection on my experience of Leeds Seventeen, I'm just saving my return trip for a special occassion.

Most sandwiches sit in the £4 - £5 range, with a choice of ciabatta or baguette. It's worth going for a baguette, as there's a pretty noticeable size different - if you're paying that much then you may as well get something substantial! Although the food is really tasty and made fresh to order, it's a little disappointing that nothing I've ordered so far seems to come with the option of salad. Everything I've had so far has been grilled meat with cheese - undeniably tasty, but missing something. Even things like chutney or relish have been used sparingly, so I'd expect a little extra something for that £5. I haven't yet eaten in, but everything is available for takeaway. The takeaway bags aren't big enough for the baguettes and are made of thin paper, so if you're driving back to the office with a sandwich you'll need something else to put it in, or end up with greasy seats! Minor flaws, but at these prices it can feel a bit rough. Even cheap places like Deli Chez have decent bags and the option to add salad, more sauce etc. That said, the food is really tasty and the sandwiches are well filled!

I felt a little sorry for the lady behind the counter because she was rushed off her feet but she still ran around responding to sundry demands with a smile. The point is, I really liked this place. it has a great menu which isn't wallet straining and they also do special offers on their web site. I'm pretty sure that the menu would contain something for everyone unless you are taking a confirmed cannibal out for a bite (normally I'd make a crack about tasty staff here but I'm a reformed character). As for the coffee, well you'd have to be a tea drinker to not appreciate it. My latte was smooth and frothy and delicious all the way. Even if you are just on a flying visit it's worth trying the lovely brownie.
