The shop was buzzing when I went in, though I was served within a few minutes so I had time to take a look before deciding. All four of the guys in there were working hard, making sausages, weighing meats and refreshing the stock. The meat was really reasonable, around £3 ish for a huge bag, which was meant to feed three in one meal. Unless I'm stingy with my portions, I actually found that it lasted for two stews feeding five people in total! So, for around three quid this was a complete bargain. The meat itself was utterly delicious - simply 2 hours in the stew and it literally melted in the mouth. It was fabulous and not in the least bit tough! All in all I highly recommend.

We've so many fantastic independent little shops and cafés, it seems only right that such essentials as cheap quality meats grace our presence. Harris and Artisan Baker, the triumvirate of local produce has arrived. And what a force for good these three powerhouses are. I can now purchase my three main food groups (meat, veg and bread) independently, cheaply and within a few minutes of each other - how's that for convenience? And you can't top the banter neither. The last time I visited Headingley Farm Butchers I was delighted to purchase enough casserole beef to feed four, for a mere £3.50. Their chicken breasts are large enough to satisfy the mighty Thor, albeit non-free-range, though when I discussed this the friendly banterous butcher informed me that they are well kept. If I hadn't been in a rush to come home I would have stopped for longer to check out their awesome chutney selection - they have all manner of amazing pickles and jams to choose from! So I toddled off to the Market and found B&J Callard had exactly what I was after. The very nice butcher weighed out 2lbs of braising steak for me and as he was bagging it up, I was rummaging for my purse. Which was not in my bag. Panic set in then and I apologised profusely and said I'd have to leave it for today. Nope. Instead of sending me on my merry way, he handed me the bag of beef and told me to drop the money in another time. I was speechless. I didn't think this happened anymore in this day and age! So after lots of thanking, I dashed off to get a bus home and see if my purse was there - thank goodness it was and after another sprint to get the bus back to town (I had to go to work after this too!), I went and paid the lovely butcher. I will definitely use them again, they went above and beyond to provide their service and I'm so very grateful to them for it.

This is a great find and has an excellent reputation for some of the best organic meat and veg in the area. Not only do they have a long list of awards but they also provide supplies to Harvey Nichols as well. Not a bad boast. You can even try some rarer breed pork if that tickles your fancy. For me it's the organic free range eggs that appeal and some hearty herbs. You'll also be shopping in the knowledge that not only are they providers of organic produce but they also pride themselves on their fine animal welfare certificates for looking after all their animals. For me that is very important and I cannot praise them highly enough for it. They also offer guided walks around the farm and outlying area from time to time so it's a good idea to keep checking their website if you want to see more about where your food is coming from.
