I went to Kirkgate market looking for some ribeye steak, only to be told by a chap outside one of the many butchers' shops that I "won't get any of that here, only something else that you will be told is ribeye". Undeterred, I asked where I might, on the off-chance, get some; he directed me to B & J Callard.
The shop was very clean and both the younger and older butcher working there were friendly and very knowledgeable. He talked me through the different cuts available and I came away with two slices of sirloin steak, cut especially thick, as I requested. Incidentally, they did have some ribeye, but I had changed my mind.
I fried the meat and had it rare (when I got home, that is). It was delicious .
Although a bit more expensive than some of the other shops on the row, this place felt like a traditional butchers and seemed to offer more quality and less 'Del-Boy' than some of the other places, not that they don't have their place.
I will definitely be going again. read more
