I'm afraid I'm rather biased here as I have a rather sweet tooth! Sweet Treat must look like a…read moreglowing slice of heaven to any nearby kids as it is perfectly designed with its bubbly colourful signage and its generally gleaming rows of large plastic sweetie jars to turn kiddies (and myself) into drooling money-making machines! These days there are few corner shops that provide the simple joy of buying sweets by the gram and taking away a bulging paper bag of sugary goodness. Even the tubs of penny sweets that were to be found in every newsagent's when I was a child seem to be on the wane. Sad times. But Leeds Market is here to fill the void, and Sweet Treat has as yummy an offering as any other sweet shop in the market, with a huge range of sweeties to choose from, as well as pre-selected and priced bags, ice creams and slushy type drinks. Oh no...sugary cravings are beginning to kick in!

There are lots and lots of old fashioned marketed sweet stalls in the market, and whilst this place…read moresells the same kind of things (with the addition o ice cream) to the others, it has a much more bubbly fun modern feel. Using the same font and style as a 'millions' wrapper, the bright sign entices you to look at the jars and jars of sweets. Sweet Treat also do pre packaged bags for a couple of quid, ensuring you don't overspand in the pick n' mix department. Overall, it's a really fun and bright stall.

This is yet another one of those treasured indie shops that has emerged onto the main shopping area…read moreof Otley. It seems that although Leeds city centre has, hands down, a wider volume of stores Otley has, hands down, a better selection of specialist and interesting shops. ChezVin undoubtedly fits in to that category of specialist and interesting. They stock a range of hundreds of wines from over ten different countries, ensuring that they have enough to suit any taste and any budget. The owner of the store has a wealth of knowledge on the subject of wine, and so will almost certainly send you away with something that you'll be delighted with, and can find you the perfect wine for any occasion. Not content with providing the people of Otley and Leeds the perfect bottle of vino, ChezVin also stocks a myriad of different whiskies (to suit even the more discerning whisky fanatic) and a range of liqueurs and spirits that you might have trouble finding in your standard Bargain Booze. If there were only more ChezVins in the country than Bargain Boozes I imagine that our binge drinking culture might cease and people's attitude towards alcohol might become more refined. This is not an average 2-4-1 boozy newsagents selling cheapo nasty lagers, this is the delicatessen of the alcohol world. Worth making the trip!

Aw man. You have to check out this shop - 'tis a thing of beauty! It's one of those places that any…read moreadult could not help but get a little giddy at the thought of entering. Truly, there are other shops that might claim to have that traditional vibe, but I've yet to discover a more traditional-willy-wonka-oliver-old-school kind of sweet shop. As you got in you are surrounded by shelves literally packed with sweets in jars - barley sugars, aniseed balls, chocolate pennies, sugar mice, licorice buttons - I could go on endlessly. I think it was the nostalgia that made it so exciting. There were two counters where both shop assistants had scales and aprons and measured out portions of delight to the happy waiting customers. Prices were pretty reasonable considering, I'd guess, they have the monopoly on the market - certainly in Otley at least! I left with a quarter of aniseed balls and a quarter of shrimps. One very happy camper.

It has very cleverly stocked a mammoth range of sweets that most people will remember from their childhood. It means that most end up purchasing a paper bag of treats, purely down to the nostalgic sugary buzz it brings with it. They have all the retro style sweets such as bon bons of all varieties, rainbow puffs, dib dabs, cola bottles, fizz whizz popping candy, flying saucers, drum sticks etc etc etc....and they also stock some classier goodies such as stem ginger (my grandma's absolute favorite). The staff are very friendly, with their wide eyed sugary stares and massive grins that you imagine to be sticky to the touch. Willy Wonka eat your heart out. They also have a website and the option to purchase from their wide selection online, although I wouldn't suggest that you make a habit of it!
