That's not saying much because there are only a handful of businesses in Rawdon, but this butcher's would hold its own anywhere, as proven by its six other branches in bigger towns across Yorkshire. I've been here twice, instructed by my parents to bring back a joint (of meat, they're not stoners) for the Sunday roast, and both times, Wilkinson's has served me well. On the first occasion, I chose a tender piece of lamb and on the next visit I elected to go for topside of beef. On both occasions, the guys behind the counter gave me a brief bit of chat about how best to cook it, which, combined with the high quality of the meat they handed over, really impressed me. They are not on the main shopping street in Yeadon, but on a tiny back road towards the bottom of Henshaw Lane. If you didn't know they were there you would probably only notice them towards Christmas, when you could see the customers queuing out of the door and down the street. Their pies have been a Boxing Day staple at my Mum's house for my whole life (that I can remember!) They do a great range of meats and sausages and can give advice on cuts, preparation and cooking.

As well as the bog standard over counter service you'd normally expect from a butchers, they seem to have gone for the supermarket style displays of meat in chillers displayed around the shop, as well as a salad-bar style exhibition of pre-made 'ready-meals', that were presumably meant to be a quick easy alternative to cooking anything yourself (which in my mind automatically defeats the objective of going to a butchers). Instead of gasping at the vast ammount of meat they had for selection, I was rather disturbed by the lack of quality and was faced with mental images of torture and death. Staying too long in there could easily have turned me vegetarian. I wish I could have something to say about the low prices etc, but I'm afraid Ic ouldn't help but to make a swift exit and walk a few doors down to Tesco's, whose meat section was far less daunting.

Two of my friends, a couple, are absolute consumate foodies, and the wide eyes of these two in here was like the kid in Miracle on 34th Street realising there IS A SANTA CLAUS! So what is Cranberries Hampers, essentially it is a delicatessen, with a coffee bar included in the deli area. In addition to this there are buffet and catering services which are good to know if you've got an event coming up and fresh meats, dips, snack bits, salads and whatnot are your type of food. The deli counter itself is full of delicious cuts of meat, and in accordance to what the foodies said, were excellent quality, premium in fact. They went around the place, happily buzzing between the marmalades and jams, wines, marinades, sauces, olives, oils, all of the important stuff you require from a deli. Whence the foodies bought what they needed to stock up on, I decided I was a bit starved and when in Rome, let's eat. In a bit of a rush after their prolonged cruising of the goods, we got our food to go. My healthy sized New Yorker sarnie at £3.30 was a delish combo of chicken, pastrami, and Emmental, minus the gherkin cos they are sooo nasty. Foodies ordered beef, sweet chili and mozzarella, and t'other one, the fussy get, created his own for £4 with change. All in all a nice little place serving the needs of those who require more choice and quality than a supermarket, and appreciate the quality difference.

It's a little bit too survival living for me but I reliably involved that it is a delicious savoury treat. if you're more of a sausage person (oh matron) then go for the salami. it's some serious bread action for me though and foccacia sent from bread heaven. delicious. If I'm feeling really naughty I'll end with a rustic muffin or passion cake. Well it's part of my five a day so it can't hurt can it. it's a nicely done out shop too, well stocked and easy to use. We need to keep these fine eating places alive and kicking. We need more of them. We need Cranberries Hampers in our lives.

In retrospect, it was awfully silly to be surprised to find that a deli market would be mostly food based, but I digress! Though the market seemed small at the outset it was bigger on the inside, with each stall offering a variety of culinary delights. The wife and I both tried french macaroons for the first time, loads of different cheeses, some brilliant Extreme Chutney (with a side of delicious bhajis), and really interesting pork pies. All in all it was a really nice lunch adventure and I only wish I'd have had more cash on hand to sample a few more offerings!

The rain clouds had done their stuff in the morning and they managed to stay away while I was there. This is my first time at this event and to be honest I thought it would have been a bit bigger. There were a few empty stalls. But as I looked round that was on offer I took my time to sample a few cheeses, preserves and ales that were offered. I was impressed with the buffalo burgers as they were lovely and juicy. There were pies and pastries and cakes galore. My eyes spent an absolute fortune!! I came away after trying the many different wares that were on offer. As my purse strings are a bit tight this month so I only bought a litre of cider which I shall be trying tonight. It was a lovely way to pass a half hour but I came away wishing it had been a little larger!
