We've so many fantastic independent little shops and cafés, it seems only right that such essentials as cheap quality meats grace our presence. I understand the convenience of such stolid forces, the likes of Sainsbury's, but I for one have been crying out for a cheaper, more local option for some time. Together, with R. K. Harris and Artisan Baker, the triumvirate of local produce has arrived. And what a force for good these three powerhouses are. I can now purchase my three main food groups (meat, veg and bread) independently, cheaply and within a few minutes of each other - how's that for convenience? And you can't top the banter neither. The last time I visited Headingley Farm Butchers I was delighted to purchase enough casserole beef to feed four, for a mere £3.50. Their chicken breasts are large enough to satisfy the mighty Thor, albeit non-free-range, though when I discussed this the friendly banterous butcher informed me that they are well kept. (Of course, he would be able to say anything but I'm inclined to trust an independent over a supermarket, right?) And once again, I believe I purchased two gargantuan breasticles for about £3 ish. Boom! Go here for meat. That is all.

They didn't order them, and they also didn't call me to tell me that there would be a problem. The most I got from them was an apathetic apology, apparently the rewards you get for attempting to support local business instead of going to a supermarket.

My dad told me pay a visit to this butchers after buying a piece of machinery from them for our bakery and then finding out how much AWARD WINNING produce they have! I got told to get the award winning bacon and Cumberland Sausages. So, in we walk and I have never seen so many award winning signs in my life! What to choose??? Let's start with the Cumberland sausages - two kinds, both please! And then to the choice of bacon, well, how do people choose?? We opted for the black treacle cured back bacon (award winning obviously) and Adam Y chose the oak smoked back bacon. All the bacon was boasting not to leave that nasty white stuff in your pan. While we were here we picked up some award winning pies too. Pork Pie, Peppered Steak Pie and Chicken Pie. All of which looked perfect (coming from a baker, that's a HUGE compliment) and i am told they tasted just as good! The service we received whilst in the shop was second to none. Enough said. If you are ever passing Windermere town (and you eat meat) you must pay Huddlestons a visit! x

'The most memorable thing about Windemere was a "Cornish" pasty I bought from Huddlestone's Butchers in Windemere. It was so good I returned to the shop to tell them so, and the man said he had obtained the recipe from an old friend of his in Cornwall, who had recently retired, and finally parted with his secret recipe. So if you are in the Lake District, and craving for a "genuine" Cornish pasty, go along to Huddlestone's Butchers in The Avenue, Windemere.' I am so pleased that they have been recognised as the 'Premier' in 2016. Congratulations to all at Huddlestones. And yes, I can still remember how good it was. And I still live in Cornwall. I adore the concept of street food, there is something delightfully carefree about enjoying a snack in the sun. Although the food available is perhaps not the healthiest option on the high street, the delicious aromas that emanate from the stall never fail to tempt my taste buds. The same tempted taste buds soon become tickled when indulging in a treat. Established over 90 years ago, the products at Ditsch are cooked on the premises, in ovens visible to the customer. I suspect the items arrive at the stall ready to be baked, as they do taste slightly synthetic. When you can purchase a freshly cooked salami pizza or barbeque chicken bake for a nominal couple of pounds, Ditsch offers a comforting option whilst on the move. Followed up with a cinnamon pretzel, expect to feel refuelled and ready to continue with your day.

When the German Market is here during Christmas time I get so excited about the pretzel stand, well my savior that is Ditsch means that I can have these delicious Germans treats all year through. Ditsch can be easy to miss, as it's literally just a whole in a wall, there's no shop to walk into, or place to sit. The entirety of their shop is where the baking and magic happens. There is a massive counter displaying pizza breads and pretzels, yum. Walking down the street you can smell it a mile off and trust me it tastes as good as it smells! I highly recommend stopping here for a shopping break as it's certainly worth trying. Their pizza breads are delicious; I always have the barbeque chicken pizza. Its something different, something fun and really tasty too, how bad can that be?
