After several decades driving past the Cheshire while growing up in Saint Louis, I finally had a chance to stay there. First, the good: the ambiance is consistent throughout the property. I had a great time walking up and down the halls on each floor to check out the unique art. The fitness room is nicely appointed! While we didn't get to check out either of the on-site restaurants, we peeked inside Fox and Hounds and it had a good crowd. The complimentary breakfast was hearty and delicious, and it was nice to grab a free bottle of juice or water from the cooler (which did seem to be locked after breakfast hours) Great location as well, we loved walking around the neighborhood and Forest Park! What keeps this from being a five-star review? Some ice buckets and dirty dishes were on a table in the fourth-floor lobby for over 12 hours. A bit disorienting to see every time we got off the elevator. The pillows were pretty flimsy. Lots of linty buildup on the blow dryer deterred me from using it. Overall will definitely stay here again anytime I visit Saint Louis, definitely want to come back during summer and use the pool! read more

My daughter stayed here for a Christmas visit and when I visited her, the room was filthy. The photos attached show the dirt, dust, and broken items. The room was dark and dingy. The theme of the hotel was cute but it all needed to be cleaned and updated. Fantastic location; very close to Forest Park (where sooo many attractions are) and almost right off Interstate 64. Has a lot of ambiance and character! Just look at the pictures and you'll get the idea. It is like taking a trip back in time to a British lodging from several decades ago. We stayed in the Sherlock Holmes room. All the rooms are theme oriented to a specific person or fictional character. Beds were comfortable. Our room was quiet and looked out over the pool. Many choices in the breakfast that is included. Firstly I just want to acknowledge the front desk receptionist, Lyric, was amazing. That being said my partner and I have a few gripes about this place: -room was always cold to her, even with the a/c off -the underground parking lot entrance/exit lanes were opposite (entrance lane far left while exit lane was the far right.... Typically it's the other way around -the room keys kept being deactivated...we went through like 8 keys in the 4 days. It was frustrating. -not a big deal to me but the pool light was out so it's always dark in the evening on the pool patio Outside of those cons the place was awesome, the way it looks (see pics) was much cooler than going to a four seasons. It's right on the edge of city/county line which is a great location, the bar inside resembles an English pub which is cool, the free breakfast in the morning is nice, the workers are nice, & parking is only $10/night while the deposit is only $50. After living in St. Louis 10 year, I finally booked a room at the Cheshire for my daughter and me. The hotel staff was so friendly and helpful, and the check-in was quick. We checked into our room and there was a noise coming from the vents that would have kept me up all night. I called downstairs and asked for another room. Staff was happy to oblige and had a new key waiting by the time we got back down. We checked into another room on the same floor. In this room, there was also a buzzing sound similar to fluorescent lights coming from the stairwell next door. At this time, I did not have the energy to change again. It was not as loud as the previous issue in the other room. The room itself was disappointing. Everything was old. It has an old motel feel, not a quaint boutique or historic feel. The furniture in the hallways is random. It seems haphazardly placed. The halls themselves were a bit spooky to me. We went to Basso (which is a favorite for happy hour) and returned later. We watched TV and then I showered. The shower took forever to get sort of warm. It was definitely not a hot shower. This was very disappointing. The best part was the breakfast. It was one of the best spreads I have seen at any hotel. I would not stay here again. I am happy that I got a discounted rate. We were driving across country and were stopping for one night in St Louis. I'm not familiar with St Louis, but wanted to visit the zoo with my kids and have some pool time. Of all the hotels I looked at, only the Cheshire has an outdoor pool. Also, reviews of the free breakfast sounded good. It was a bit pricier than other establishments, but I really prefer outdoor pools to indoor pools. The staff were really friendly. They had candy at check in (bonus points with kids), a game room with a piano and a chess board, fresh fruits... all bonus points with kids. The breakfast was truly delicious. The usual faire plus added touches like fresh berries and delicious pastries. Even though the hotel is a bit old, they played into it and made it charming. So definitely worth the extra cost! Definitely a charming, quaint little place. It's hard to imagine something more British in the middle of the American Midwest. First things first, yes, The Cheshire is a bit dated, but don't let that sway you. It adds to the rustic charm. Sure, my room was a bit small and I was disappointed that there wasn't a mini fridge or microwave, but those things wouldn't be available in retro Britain either. The pub (Fox & Hound Tavern) swept me away, as if I was across the pond. Great bartender, lowkey vibe and solid drinks. The hotel quarters were very true to the British feel. From the decor to the chairs and paintings, it was really a neat place to visit. If you're hoping to experience the heart of St. Louis, this might not be the best place to stay. It's on the west side of town and there wasn't much of a view of anything from the rooms. I also wasn't thrilled by the mandatory extra charge for parking, but at least I felt that my vehicle was safe. Overall, I'd say the ambiance is 4.5/5 for being true to British form. I came here for a yelp event! I've never actually heard of this place prior to this event. They had food out but but the food was dry, lacking any flavor and did not seem fresh. The food was warm but after one taste I put mine down. I am glad they had a veggie tray as I am Keto so limited on my carb intake. The breakfast was the only positive aspect of our recent stay at the Cheshire Inn. As expatriate St Louisans, we recall the inn as a fine destination. NO LONGER THE CASE. The inn is in sad need of repair. The mounted bear in the lobby was an apt symbol: old, broken down,dirty , and in sad need of repair. Final insult was the price for two days: just shy of $1000!!! Rooms were dirty, dishes left in hall for our entire stay, elevators "decorated" with trash. With two "doormen", no one ever offered to help with baggage cart or even open door for us as we trundled through We will NEVER stay there again!! read more

My husband and I stayed here for a long weekend. It was just what we were looking for! It has character and charm. The room could use some updating with more plugs and a refrigerator, but ours was clean and large. Loved the common areas and having a restaurant and pub on site were awesome amenities. If you're looking for a different hotel than the norm, the Cheshire is the place for you. The decor looks like British antique? I'm not sure but we enjoyed sitting in the lobby playing chess and enjoying the crackling coming from the fireplace. The room was quaint and beds were comfortable and firm! We loved that we could get hot tea anytime. Water bottles are free at the mini shop by the front desk, and $3 for anything else. The most delightful surprise was the breakfast! Quite a nice spread for being continental. We loved all the berries and variety of berries, eggs and bacon, and croissant/danishes. There is a $10 parking fee and we parked in the underground lot right in front of the elevator and had direct access to our room. Bonus when you had to make a few trips. I had a great time at the pool with several others. The cabanas was great to get in the shade for a bit. The summer time Sun did not hit at an uncomfortable angle and we were in a golden spot for supreme fun! The top featured items on their menu was amazing. The staff was extra accomendating inside and outside. Two mid size garages downbelow gave it extra breathing room. Not sure if there are elevators but there was stairs. Inside gave me some medieval kingdom vibes which was pretty different and cool at the same time! There is an interesting computer area deep in the lobby to get things done if need be. I really enjoy this unique scene in the St. Louis area. With a nearby hospital, highway and biggest national city park, Forest Park next door. The served appetitizers were very tasty. The staff was nice, but it's not the cleanest place to stay at. We booked the two queen room, and they have a huge bed frame which is easy to hit your shin in the middle of the night or if you're not paying attention. We had to wrap towels around it. Additionally they had a faulty fire alarm that went off in the middle of the night, I hope they have that fixed soon. read more

We were quite upset with the conditions the room was in. The hotel itself has the fun theme however it could do with serious maintenance and cosmetic updates. The pool is quite small but a nice set up with seating out there. The parking is questionable when trying to find a spot in the evening since it is shared with the restaurants. The building is not fully secure. The stairwell is never locked from the parking garage, the front door was only locked under keycard for a short period one night. One star- for the amazing breakfast spread a wide array of pastries (amazing croissants), cereal, fruit and two hot choices. So you'll have to hear me out on this one as the Cheshire is a really cool place. Full stop. It's definitely a 3/5 hotel stay as it stands right now, but I'm really hoping that changes. Now for the details: When you arrive, you'll be charmed by the English detailing to the building and surrounding shops - or should I say shoppes? It's adorable and I immediately loved that there was a Starbucks in the same parking lot as that makes for a really easy morning coffee when travelling. When you open the door it is a bit dusty and feels old, BUT it all plays into the English charm theme which I thought was fine. There is an old telephone booth and relics of English history that are fun for anyone who loves a good theme hotel (aka me!). I arrived at the front desk and was promptly greeted by the friendly staff. A big shout out to the staff here because they really are VERY kind and hospitable. They walked me through the process of checking in and told me if I was to park overnight there would be a fee. I do wish that was disclosed at the time of booking but again, not a huge deal. I think it was $20 which felt reasonable. After checking in I moved my car and I have to say that having you drive on the left side of the road in the parking garage while suitable for the theme is really a bit dizzying and worried me the whole time that I was going to be hit! Also there is no way for folks to know you have paid to park which felt odd to me. I'll also add that while convenient, there is an elevator in the garage that leads you straight into the hotel, but there is zero security on it. As a woman travelling solo it was a bit unnerving that anyone could just walk right up and into any floor on the hotel without needing to check in or scan a card first - especially during off hours. Those worries faded though as I emerged on my floor and it was simply gorgeous and filled with charm. I walked down the hall, found my room, and sadly the charm just all faded away. Walking into the room I was greeted with a waft of what smelled like cigarette smoke. I know it's a smoke free establishment so perhaps it was an old smell or someone had stayed in the room prior to me that was a chain smoker? Not sure but it was a bit off putting. The windows have no screens but you can open them, which struck me as odd but I didn't want to leave a window open with no screen. Afterall it was summer in Missouri - not really the most bug free time of year, so I lived with the smell. It was only one night afterall. The room overall was fine, the bed comfortable, and the ac worked great. No mini fridge which was a bummer, and I had a HUGE scare when I got home late from an event, went to take a shower, let the water warm, and when I looked at the mirror there was legitimately writing all over it. Like written in the steam. I can't make this stuff up! It was filled with math equations and a graph? not sure but I immediately wiped it off, telling myself no way this place is actually haunted by a mathematician and that rather the mirror was likely never cleaned between guests? Aside from that it was just very dated. The carpet didn't feel clean and there were just things that needed replacing around the room. It also didn't feel as safe as most hotels as there was no safety latch on the door, which I would have appreciated. Overall I left feeling like this place was just chock full of unmet potential. I hope I can return in a few years to find the hotel up to the standards it could be at and worthy of a great weekend getaway, which by the way it totally could be with just a few tweaks. read more

If you are used to and are specifically wanting a modern, high end experience, The Cheshire is not for you. If you want a unique experience and a hotel that is not just a cookie cutter version of everything else, this is a great place. The lobby and rooms have antique or at least antique in appearance furniture which I personally think adds to the character and charm but some may not like. There is a large breakfast spread that is included and coffee/tea service around the clock. The hotel has a signature scent candle that you can even purchase. Each room has a theme for an English author or poet. I have stayed here many, many times over the years and actually even held my wedding at the event space so used the hotel as our designated wedding hotel. The biggest thing that you need to know is that there is not a refrigerator in every room. I believe the suites have one included but for the other rooms you need to call ahead and request it. Even then, you may not receive one because there is a very small number to go around for all the rooms. If I was going to pick one thing to upgrade for the hotel, this would be it. In regards to using the hotel as our wedding hotel, the manager was great. She kept us updated with how many guests had booked with the block. She extended the deadline on it on her own a couple times without prompting due to increased utilization. One other obscure piece of information. If you happen to be using the hotel to get ready and are having a photographer shoot in your suite, some of the suites have colored paint. As I recall, one room has kind of a faint greenish color. I didn't think that would work particularly well as the background color so specifically asked for a room with cream colored walls. (Call me high maintenance all you want.) Anyway, we used the Brideshead Revisited room for the bridal suite and it worked out great. If you are planning to do an organized group breakfast the day after your wedding, my husband worked with the hotel to have the Fox and Hound (evening pub) opened as a space for our group to meet for breakfast. read more

TL:DR - Cool theme, done well in the lobby. The accomodations themselves are terrible/dirty and the service is lacking/rude. As with most places there's good and bad (hint: it's almost all bad). The good: This place has been around forever and I've passed by it so many times, and it's always interested me. The lobby is decorated beautifully, fits the theme well. The hallways can get a bit creepy given the old look, how quiet it was, and all the pictures of old dead people hanging up everywhere. Definitely reminds me of an old English tavern. The upstairs floors were similarly decorated and fit the theme. And that's about it for the good. The bad: Upon checking in, we had to wait about 10 min before anyone even appeared at the desk. Like there was just no one there. When the gentlemen finally arrived, he was very short and rude with us. Overnight parking is also $10. Not really sure why, but it is. The front desk worker did not ask for my plate, car model, or anything, and there was no gate or anything I needed to open to get into the garage. Really feels like I could have just parked below and been fine. The room itself is dirty and terrible. Picture frames with no pictures, dirty handprints on the head board, and just generally grimy surfaces. The tv itself was also terrible and had rainbow colors all over the screen during shows (see picture). Like of course the TV was bad. It honestly feels this place has zero standard for cleanliness given other people's reviews, which is a terrible look given the pandemic. If you want to come here for the theme, it's honestly a better value to go enjoy the Fox and Hound Tavern, get a beer, then stay somewhere else. read more

I cannot say enough nice things about our stay at the Cheshire Inn. I have been a guest there for many years. And I can truly say that over the years the service gets better, amenities are better, and overall the experience is even more wonderful. You start by meeting Roxie at the front desk. She is like no other hotel worker I have ever met. Warm, friendly, and a memorable presence. She sorted out our room, and was so kind to our young son. What other hotel has a kids treasure map??? You can't miss her because her vest is decorated with sparkly jewels that you would expect to see at Buckingham Palace. If you're going to the Cheshire you know you're in for an experience. It is like stepping into the world of Austin Powers or a Sean Connery 007 1968 movie. The hotel is of course decorated as if Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip (RIP) would be walking in any second. They go all in on funky antique furniture and paintings, taxidermy stuffed Grizzy, tchotchkes all over. Every room is named for a famous UK historic person. All of the hotel amenities in the rooms are what you would see at most upscale hotels. But what you're really in for is the decor, and the vibe of being in another world. It was almost similar to Harry Potter than being in St. Louis. We always book a room in the summer, so that we can use the pool. The pool is the draw. It is always filled with nice people enjoying it to cool down in the unbelievably humid St. Louis weather. Our second favorite part is the Fox and Hound Pub. It really does feel like you are in a time warp in London in 1945. Our bartender was Chris and he fixes up with some delicious cocktails which we enjoyed in the pool. I have to mention the breakfast. The Buffet is incredible, and better than any hotel I've ever been in any country. The pastries, eggs, pancakes, and coffee can't be beat. The Cheshire Inn is a treasure. I enjoyed my three night stay at The Cheshire. The first night started with tornados/Severe storm in the area and the staff handled the situation professionally and had folks in the lobby/Tavern go to the parking garage lower level for safety when the alarms sounded. The staff were professional and friendly. My room was clean, comfortable and I enjoyed the creative theme. The lobby and hallways were decorated and fun! I'm not much of a drinker and feel like a fish out of water in most bars, but Fox & Hounds was comfortable/Had a warm feel to it. I also dined at Basso and thought the food was great. The fact that there was an on-site Tavern, restaurant and Starbucks was great for a traveler like me. Usually, hotel stays are not a lot of fun and I find myself bored in my room, but I had a nice time eating the free breakfast in the mornings and exploring the grounds. It's clear that the owners are waiting for a lightning strike or an electrical fire so they can collect the insurance money and run. Soooo Cheshire(D) From Lack Of Sleep. I came to STL to visit a dear friend, whose mother's health was in steep decline. My friend grew up in STL (now lives in London), and had always wanted to check out the Cheshire, so she booked us a pool room. When we checked in the lady at the front desk told us that our room wasn't ready, so we dropped off our bags at the front desk, and went elsewhere for a drink while we waited. When we returned, we went to retrieve the bags, and they were being stored at the bar, and not really secure. Yikes. The room (103) was okay, but later that night we were woken up at 2:30 by extremely loud, coke-fueled party from the room next to us (101). Shouting, music, and doors slamming. I'd never heard such blatant disregard to other guests sleep before. I banged on the wall and it would "quiet" down for a few minutes, then start all over again. I called the front desk 3 different times and no change. Exasperated, I got out of bed at 3:30 and walked to the front desk. I asked them to please confront the unruly party head on, and they eventually did. Nightmare! The next morning I asked to be moved, and the lady at the front desk said there wasn't another comparable room available. I told her I saw the housekeeping clean a room across the pool for us, and pretty much demanded to be moved. Thankfully they obliged. Ours last night was so much better! The highlight of the trip was hanging in the lobby by the fire, sharing wine, and takeout dinner. We met some other guests and shared our stories. Unless management takes control of noise complaints in a timely manner, I doubt I'd ever be back. Breakfast was ok, but the pool was another highlight. Decided to stay again and things have changed. When we showed up to check in we had to wait for the lady to finish her page in her book before getting to us to check in. Dust was caked on electrical plugs, baseboards and in the corners of the room. The shower had mold in it and had not been derp cleaned in quite some time. The room had not been thoroughly vacuumed in awhile, there were crumbs and dust along the edges of the carpet and in the corners of the room. We told the front desk about the state of the room, they said housekeeping would clean it while we were gone. That did not happen. When we checked out I explained again to the manager on duty, he gave us a $100 refund. For $300/night we expected a much better experience. Currently staying at the Cheshire Inn- OH MY GOSH! The cutest ambiance and incredible amenities. The continental breakfast is superb with loads of pastries and fresh fruit. I'd absolutely recommend staying here for a weekend getaway or as part of a trip. The decorations are so memorable and with prices comparable to a Holiday Inn, this hotel is 10/10. Pros - unique experience ie not a holiday inn -close to Forest Park -great breakfast flavored water in lobby bottle waters and fruit to take -staff was friendly Cons -No fridge or microwave in rooms -everything is getting a bit old and dated -hvac in room was very noisy -bed posts stick out so be careful =no fan in bathroom and it was tiny also they have some weird motion detection system which was ridiculous So overall I am glad I stayed but once is enough read more

My husband and I stayed here for our anniversary. It was our first time. We loved the ambiance and decor. We had dinner at Basso which was amazing. The breakfast at the hotel was good as well. However, we were extremely disappointed with the cleanliness of our room. We paid over $300 for the room and were shocked at how filthy it was. We didn't even want to cover up with the bedding.
