We did however, even before entering, find ourselves peering along the road looking for a close alternative, and when we didn't spy one. headed in anyway- what fools we are. It's big, and loud, not freshly decorated (shall we say) and a bit spoonsy. There are a good few TVs for sports of you're into that sort of thing, I'm personally not. They get kudos for having more than just your standard gins, although didn't have either first choice that were listed on the menu. The don't get kudos however, for curt service, ignoring Thank yous, and no pleasantries- yes, I understand the bar is busy- but I expect it's far more busy with sports on. To top off the experience, I was violently jabbed by a brat with a bright green plastic sword whilst un-caring parents didn't even look on.- not the pub's fault I know, it just added to the not very inviting atmosphere. And who spells Nevill without the E anyway (I know, lots of people, but it looks odd!)

It's very popular with the locals and often attracts groups of rowdy youngsters on the weekend and a crowd of the local drunks. The Pub is split into two, one room is used for Darts and Pool and it always used to be MEN ONLY - not sure if that has changed but I dare not even try to go in!! It's very much a Local's only bar and you can feel a little intimidated if your not known. It's a shame really because it has an ideal location directly opposite the Train Station so it's an ideal place to attract passing trade.

Anyways, it was a short walk from our B & B on a little side street, and it's pretty dang cute. Since we're from the US, all of the cottage and pub type architecture is very quaint and a novelty, so I liked it. Apparently it can get pretty busy, but you can always make a reservation. We took a seat at a long wooden table inside, decided what we wanted from the menu, and then went down to the bar to order our dinner and drinks. They do bring the food to you, but you order at the bar. I went with the mushroom ravioli and there were soooo many raviolis! Very tasty, and I love mushrooms, so it worked out well haha. Just a lot of food. If I lived here or visited again, I'd make my way back here again. It's pretty casual but the food was good, they had a decent selection of alcohol, and like I said, it's a cute building.

We booked with it being Saturday night and along with a couple of pints from their range of 5 guest cask ales, chose the lasagne and pork loin for dinner. The food menu is traditional British pub food, but we had heard from friends who'd visited previously that all the food is made from the freshest ingredients and of great quality so it was quite hard making our decision as everything sounded so tasty. We made a great choice as both our meals were excellent and just about squeezed in a piece of sticky toffee pudding in (I could have squeezed 2 pieces in it was that good...) but just be aware that the kitchen stops serving food at 9pm so make sure you leave yourself time to order it from the bar if you have a sweet tooth! Highly recommended; It's the first place I'll go back to next time I'm in Llandudno.

I do however well remember the good ol' days of the Fat Cat when you'd have to fight your way in, fight your way to the bar, fight your way to the toilets etc. Not much has changed internally, it still has the same layout and same style, but having recently visited at 10pm on a Saturday night it's obvious that one thing has changed the number of customers. Not only did we not have to fight our way in we pretty much had the run of the place and not only did we find somewhere to sit (something practically unheard of in the old days) we had a wide choice of seats to select from. This may be partly due to the fact that the bar doesn't target the usual Saturday night drinking crowd. There's no cheap lager, only more expensive brands served up in fancy glasses. Some of the small band of customers present were buying cocktails which were served up with dry ice capsules that made the drinks smoke, something that looks impressive but probably doesn't add to the flavour! As well as drinks they also serve food but no-one seemed to be eating that late at night so we had no chance to sneak a peek at other people's grub. All in all it's a nice and reasonably upmarket place (the toilets need a revamp and hopefully refurbishment will be on the new owners to-do list) but you wonder if the demand is still there for a place like this in Llandudno, especially considering not only that the Fat Cat closed because the owners went bust but also that a rival bar & grill is set to open a few doors away.

After a climb of many stairs to the toilets, one can look back over the main space and sea the two tiers of seating above the drinkers stalls and the Gods still visible. On our visit, the six Nations tournament was on TV and the locals were cheering on the Italians (as they were playing England, this was expected). There was Wetherspoons usual excellent choice of real ales at bargain prices and, alongside the usual bargain meals, there were a good half-dozen local-themed meals such as Welsh rarebit, lamb cawl, Welsh Dragon sausages.. If you are in the area, it would be a crime not to visit, just to see the place!

Before going I checked out the menu on their website and was a bit surprised by the prices, which are quite expensive for what at the end of the day is a pub in North Wales. I'd more or less decided in advance to go for the Welsh steak & ale pie which at £12.95 was just about a fiver more expensive than the steak & ale pie on offer at my more familiar haunt, the Afon Conwy which is just a few miles away. I was hoping for a very special pie! First things first the pub has a large car park so parking was no problem. The interior is very nicely done albeit in a fairly predictable gastropub decor. The dining area lives up to the venue's name with several tables along the side of the building offering views of Conwy Castle just over the water. The staff were friendly and efficient although there weren't many other customers to keep them occupied so they weren't anywhere close to being kept busy. Foodwise I went with the steak and ale pie which was fortunately very good and very well presented. My wife had a Caesar salad which was also excellent. The kids opted for chicken goujons and fish and chips from the kids menu, which at £7.25 each were two of the priciest kids meals we've encountered in this part of the world. Again though they were excellent, the goujon meal came with the two biggest goujons I've ever seen and the fish was a generous portion. The best compliment I give though is that both plates were cleared, something that doesn't always happen with my kids. As always there had to be someone who ordered something I ended up wishing I'd ordered and in this case it was father-in-law whose beer battered cod turned out to be a huge piece of fish which looked to be have been perfectly cooked. As this is one of the cheapest meals on the main menu I think if I ever go back that might be the one to try. All in all the food, and accompanying drinks, were all excellent and every plate was cleared. It's just a shame it's so expensive in comparison to other places in the area. It was noticeable that the place was very quiet when we visited, in fact it was almost deserted apart from the staff. It's a real shame given the quality on offer and I was left wondering if maybe they'd get more business if they knocked a quid or two off the prices? Certainly I'd more inclined to revisit if this were the case.

However it does lack some of the old atmosphere. The Food here is excellent, a good choice of traditional pub grub and more elaborate dishes. The prices are good value and the portions are big. The Sweets are delicious, you must make room for one!! It has a nice seating are outside with stunning views over to Conwy castle, hence the name!
