Food is constantly monitored for temperature and cleanliness so COVID wasn't an issue. They have gluten free buns. I got a bacon cheeseburger with a gluten free bun. My spouse got a bacon cheeseburger with a fried egg and avocado. We spit an order of fries. Its hard to find a good gf burger bun, they are usually to thick and crumble when you are trying to eat them. The gf bun at The Butcher was amazing. It didn't fall apart and was big enough for the burger without being to fluffy. The fries were also really good as was the chocolate cherry ice cream pop. read more

Vegetarian Burger was really very delicious and French fries too. Restaurant guests are mostly and mainly male, so for couples it's not so great! There are only a few tables and you need to make a reservation. There are long tables in the middle ot the restaurant and you may be sitting next to other guys. Burgers in Switzerland- what was I thinking!?? I wasn't thinking- sometimes in life we need to take risks. Sometimes the risks are worth it, sometimes they are not so we learn and move on. Spoiler alert: this was worth it. After having dinner in the area and paying a hefty price for it (see Tre Cucine for the deats), I was hoping to get something with a little more bang for my buck for lunch. After walking the restaurant row for a while my friends and I were starting to get antsy and hangry. Every menu we passed seemed to only please one person while the rest of us rolled our eyes with impatience and annoyance. We saw The Butcher from afar and decided to give this place a shot, although being scolded by a European for eating American food in another country. There was a sign that said please wait to be seated but no one came, we got in line for take away in hopes of snagging the waitress before it was our turn to order so we could have a table. Our plan worked and we were seated shortly. We were giving an English menu and it didn't take us long to figure out what we wanted. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with fries, water, and a coffee. My friends ordered the goat cheese burger and cheeseburger. Food is expensive in Switzerland, so don't be surprised when your burger is $17 + without fries. I can get a basic meal in McDonald's for almost $20 so I didn't mind the hefty price tag for the quality I was getting. This was a legit burger, it was HUGE. You have the option to "supersize" it for a half pound patty instead of the standard ¼, but I don't recommend this because it's a big burger. Food was great, I couldn't finish my meal at all. The quality of meat was also superb. I don't eat meat in the U.S. so I really enjoyed how tasty and fresh this meat was, my friends also raved about their burgers. If you don't want to pay for water, you can ask for tap and they can accommodate. I recommend this place if you crave American food and if you want a good bang for your buck. This place is HUGE, when you enter off The Limmat (or limmatquai..?) the doors are beautiful and there are cool lights hanging on the walls and ceiling. You can see the butcher theme throughout with the variety of hanging meat hooks. There are plenty of high top tables when you first enter but when you walk past into the next room, there are lots of benches and a low ceiling. Someone must've painstakingly designed this place because it's very cool and a fun place to hang out while you enjoy a burger and a drink. There is a nice outdoor space, lots of picnic table style wooden benches with umbrellas, where you can enjoy the Old Town atmosphere. The staff was a mixed bag. The service was good but the female waitress was quite indignant when we ordered tap water. My friend said she gets that reaction every time she's here. That's just unnecessary because not everyone wants to order a CHF 5-10 beverage especially at lunchtime when we're going for a quick bite. The burgers looked sad, but they were actually very juicy. I think it's mostly the size of the bun that masks the contents in between that makes you think the burger looks kind of minuscule but the flavor was there and my fingers were covered in juices from even the first few bites. The kitchen was very busy when I walked by en route to the bathrooms downstairs. It seemed really chaotic actually but there were maybe 10 tables max in the whole place at the time. Overall decent burger but wouldn't go out of my way to go there. If I'm in the neighborhood I would stop by for a burger (around CHF 11-12) for the basic but skip on the fries (you get very little for what it costs, nearly $10! and if you compare the quantity to what you get at Holy Cow for CHF 4.50 but admittedly, this place has a more sophisticated feel than Holy Cow). read more

After reading the first review, I thought to try this place. I saw no one was in the restaurant so I felt a bit strange but then found out that everyone was at the upper level back outside of the restaurant. it has nice outdoor space. We got the Butcher burger and it was ok but nothing special. Burger bun was a bit oily/buttery as it was grilled so if you like a grilled bun, you might like it. Fries were thick and meaty ... I like crispy and light fries so this wasn't getting much points from me. In addition, it's coming in a very small portion for 6 CHF. Awesome little burger joint tucked back off the river walk. We had passed it a couple times before deciding to stop and give it a try for lunch. They did not disappoint! My girlfriend (a pescatarian) was the one who said we should try it, which surprised me. They had plenty of options for her given that it's a burger place, which is great! The burger was well cooked, the vegetables were fresh and crisp, the bun was lightly toasted, and the whole thing came together really really well. The fries were also on another level, I almost had to order another round. I would definitely recommend stopping here if you're even considering it. read more

Apparently brown people are not welcome. It is November 25, 2018 and 7:20 pm. I just left the Butcher restaurant after waiting more than 15 minutes for a menu or for someone to offer to take my drink order. I started timing my encounter after both the man and woman working there walked past me 4 times each. Yes, I was discriminated against since when 3 white individuals walked in after I was waiting more th15 minutes they were immediately greeted, given a menu and asked what they wanted to drink. The worst service that i endured in a restaurant! This is a bold statement since I have traveled to more than 30 countries worldwide and i'm about half a century old. I sat to eat with my family and ordered burgers. Half an hour later we asked the waitress and got reassured that our dinner was being prepared. An hour later the tables around us were served despite the fact that they ordered later than us. We were reassured again our dinner is on the way. At about an hour and a half later I told the waitress that we have to go and the kids can't wait any longer. By the time we stood up the food arrived. It was undercooked (despite the one and half hr of wait)!!! The icing on the cake: Water charge was equivalent to nine euros!!!!!!!!! This was the water that the family drank waiting for the order (for 1.5 hrs) Never again! read more

There's no arguing with burgers at the Butcher. They know how to grill them, and they know what a barbecue sauce is. After trying out all of the many popular and hipster burger places in Zurich, I've had some really good ones, but Butcher's remain my favourite. They're unassuming and traditional - no weird ingredients just to be cool, no jaw-breaking sizes, just good ingredients put together really well. The fries are very well seasoned, too, the taste is fantastic and pretty unique. Unfortunately, the consistency isn't always as good. I've gotten perfect fries here before, crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle, but more often than not they are way too rubbery. Not bad enough for me to stop ordering them, though. Service is very friendly, if sometimes a bit overwhelmed at rush hour. I really don't understand the pricing, though. The prices for burgers are very reasonable, ranging roughly from 12 to 16 francs. Sides (including fries) are already rather pricey with 8 francs. What borders on the unacceptable are drink prices. 5.40 for a cup of iced tea as one of the more affordable choices is just too much. Compare to Holy Cow with its free refills to see that drink prices can be reasonable even in Zurich. I usually try to fill up on liquids before or after going to Butcher. Still, a menu at The Butcher is only going to be around twice as much as at one of the big American chains, which is fair given that this is a restaurant with waiting staff, and that the food just plays in an entirely different league. Order the bacon & cheese burger with extra caramelised onions, and you'll get what is as close to burger perfection as you're ever likely to find in Switzerland. read more

The Butcher has a great location - located right next to a billiards establishment and kino abaton. The restaurant itself is huge - spacious, well decorated (for the theme in mind), and comfortable. I am personally not a big fan of communal tables, however there are also plenty of separate tables for those similarly inclined. The burgers themselves are juicy and well prepared (although once they were undercooked and raw and had to be sent back). The choice of toppings is in my opinion rather limited, and not the largest. I love the toasted buns though, wish more places in Zürich would do this. The fries are great in my opinion, although be warned, they may be too salty for some - ask for the spice mix on the side if you do not like very strong flavors on your fries! Service is on the whole not the best I've experienced in Zürich, and seem uninterested and bored, and in general do not seem to take an effort. All in all, there is nothing exceptional about the Butcher and the burgers served, all in all the food is overpriced and lacks depth and refinement in flavor. read more

Saturday afternoon, 3:00 pm Restaurant closed, serving outside on the old town square. half the tables are empty, yet the waiting times are extreme. 15 minutes until finally got to place the order, 15 more to receive the beer, after 45 minutes, the burger is still MIA. Unacceptable 35 minutes after ordering, 50 minutes after sitting down, the burger fnally arrives. the bun looks tasty and crispy, but to my big disappointent is even softer, more bland and much more soggy than any bun I've seen athe Golden Arches. The pulled pork (by name only) was very blandm the bbq sauce wasn't, just brownish, much too sweet but otherwise very disappointingly bland brownish slop. This had nothing at all to do with how pulled pork is supposed to taste, it's almost anisult to pulled pork (i'used to live in Texas, I should know). The lettuce is limply hanging down the bun, looking withered, it's quickly discarded, the edges of the leaves are already starting to turn brown (no, not from the sloppy sauce), The slice of salad cucumber is as dry as styrofoam, no mean feat, but not a laudable one (i'dl ike to know how their ktichen gets salad cucumbers THAT dry, how many days does it take?). Sad anecdote: Currently MIckey D offers Pulled Pork burgers and the while I really don't like writening anything positive about the Golden Arches, THAT Pulled Pork plays in a different leage, It's like little league baseball (Butcher) vs. World Series (sadly, golden arches). the taste, the bread, the condiments, all tastier and fresher thena at The Butcher, at half the price. Service was friendly but businesslike and xtremely slow, too. Value for Money is really, really bad, even for Zurich. You can get good burgers in Zurich, but not at The Butcher, sorry. read more

I wouldn't hurry back! We went for a late lunch today (Monday), so it was very quiet with very few diners. We sat on the outside terrace (which is a nice spot) as the inside restaurant was closed - due to the time of day (15:00 - 15:30). Our waiter lacked any personality or friendliness - he obviously didn't want to be working on this day. We received our burgers quite quickly - 1 falafel and 1 cheese burger. My cheese burger was drenched in thousand island sauce which saturated the whole burger and bun. My beef pattie was cooked medium rare. Our friendly (not) waiter hadn't asked me how I would like my burger cooked and I had forgotten to specify, so I had to accept my own omission. Although I would expect any decent waiter to make diners aware that the burgers are cooked medium. When we came to pay, our waiter took no interest in asking us how our meal was/whether we enjoyed our food, so I pointed out my half eaten burger and said that it was quite rare for my liking to which his simple response was that all the burgers are cooked medium unless specified. I would have specified if he had done his job properly and asked me when taking my order how I would like my burger cooked! I've never written a restaurant review in my life, but felt driven to do so as I was so annoyed with today's experience. On the plus side, my friend did enjoy his falafel burger! read more

What a disappointment.... enthusiastic reviews in the newspapers. So, we went there on Sunday evening... hot temperatures but the outside terrace is nice and in the shade. The young and friendly waitress came to our table, we where a party of three, the fourth person came 5 minutes later. The 3 of us ordered drinks... just water, cause it was very hot outside. It took her 10 minutes to bring the water... in plastic disposal cups (not very environment friendly). The forth person ordered water at this time. Then we ordered food at the same time, 4 burgers - each one a bit different. After 20 minutes (!) the water has still not arrived - even though wed had reminded the waitress two times. Then 3 burgers came..... the waitress told us, which was which (there where numbers 1,2,3 on each wrapping paper. But when we bit in the burgers - we noticed, that everything was wrong, I had the Glutenfree one, my son the spicy etc. So obviously, the waitress did not know which was which! The forth burger came after another 20 minutes (we all where already finished with ours).... the explanation was, they had a problem with the cashier system and had to do then orders by handwriting to the kitchen...... to me a lash excuse. I think, she just had forgotten to order it (as she already did with the water). My resume: compared to the rather high price I had expected a far better service and probably a little less fast food experience (paper wrapped burgers and plastic cups). The ordered cheese burger (beside the price) was ok. The service was terrible. We ordered some burgers and fries. It took a long time to get the meal, about half an hour, and even people entering the restaurant after us got it way before us. When the burgers were served they forgot to bring us the fries. After asking about the side dish the waiter walked back to the bar...and didn't come back. Not till the end, so we had to leave the restaurant without. The waitress was complaining about us ordering tap water and yelling "you have to pay for the tap water". As used to have it served for free in most restaurants it was quite rude. Terrible. If your an American stay away as this burger won't be anywhere near the quality you are used to. The fries were okay but the burger was awful. It had no flavor. Our order was also wrong and the host was incredibly rude to us for not having a reservation (at a casual burger and fry joint...). The burgers are pretty good! Actually very tasty. The patty is thick and succulent with a buttery soft grilled bun. I know they worked on the bun recipe for a while before opening, and I must say it was a great complementing piece of carb to my protein. I like that their plastic cups are made of corn and the rustic-modern interior decor matches the food experience. The burger prices are very fair but the add-ons (e.g. fries) are quite steep (hence the 4 stars). The fries were seasoned well and tasty, but soggy. I guess the $60 price tag for 2 people (2 burgers, 1 order of fries, 2 drinks, 1 beer) is common in Zurich, but I still think it is too expensive considering that it's still "just" a burger place.
