Okay, we were typical Americans and HAD to try a burger in Switzerland. Was it because we hadn't had American food in over a week? Or was it because the burger was actually phenomenal? Finally got to check out Holy Cow, yum! :) My burger-lovin' American bf suggested it as a spontaneous lunch option today as we were walking by the central library, and I remembered the name from previous Yelp events, so I was super excited to come get the Holy Cow experience! The portions here are ginormous and totally fill you up. I had half a mind to order a kiddie meal to save on calories, but then I decided to continue my binge eating streak and gorge on a full-size meal. Mr. bf tried to be Mr. Responsible and suggested that we order one meal with fries and one with salad and then share the sides. How come MY order was the one with the salad?? :O Haha... However, I did order the salad with the creamiest, fattiest mayo dressing and then generously helped myself to his fat, succulent fries and smothered them in creamy mayo, tangy ketchup (from the biggest squeeze bottle I've ever seen in my life), and yellow mustard... so not sure how many calories we actually saved by doing the sharing thing. :P Putting my American hat on, I first yelped about how expensive the burgers were--like CHF 10 for the burger and 20 for the meal. But then Mr. Practical mentioned what a great deal this was--a complete meal for just under CHF 20. He did have a point. That IS quite a good deal in Switzerland. And these are gourmet burgers. The salad was just greens smothered in creamy white sauce, but it was mixed greens with what looked like lettuce, rucola, and some spring onion / scallions mixed in? The fries were awesome. Thick-cut, filled with potatoey goodness, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and seasoned perfectly. The bun was light and airy and the meat was lean but still tasty. Lots of sauce that got all over the place and in my face, and orange cheese. American cheese? Dunno. Burger cheese. I got the Maui Maui, which was 100% Swiss Beef, cheese, pineapple, chopped mint, and caramelized onions. I would say it didn't taste "American", but it was still yummy in its own way. I loved the pineapple. So sweet and yummy. It was a nice day today, and I considered sitting outside, but you're kind of looking at a graffiti-lined wall in the Niederdorf... so I decided the view indoors would be better. Plenty of bench and bar seating, large windows that let in a lot of natural light, and lots of crumbs covering the table. :P They were playing funky music that put me in a cheery mood, which was another bonus for sitting inside. Very positive five star burger joint in Zurich! Yes, the other positive reviews initially pulled me here, but my actual experience is where my five stars originate. As another reviewer noted, the burgers are on the dry side. Why? Because the near is lean, not dripping with loads of extra fat - so this is the spot for "healthy" burgers! This is the way I like my burgers but they usually don't come that way. So already I'm happy...and the bacon and avocado on my burger made me even happier :) The fries are incredible here - although like with burgers, people differ regarding their taste in fries. I'm still a huge fan of Holy Cow and continue to get my burger fix there. I'm simply updating the review since I've tried pretty much all of their burgers in the meantime and wanted to share some of my favorites: 3rd place would be the Smokin' Holy Cowboy. The mere size of that thing is impressive, let alone the taste! First runner-up is a chicken burger called Camembert & Cranberry. Only in Switzerland, right? It features some really unique flavors that blend together magically well. And my all-time-favorite: the Elvis Blue Cheese. Some people have remarked that the burgers are dry - this can be true. So, the melted blue cheese together with the caramelized onions balance that right out and create something that is just perfection! Particularly in a town like this where fast food is going high-end all over the place, I keep finding myself going back to joints like Holy Cow that are a more affordable when I'm craving a burger - those guys keep it real, to them, a burger is just a burger. read more

I have to mirror what a lot of previous reviewers have said. The price is quite good in relation to the general high prices to eat out in Zurich. The place was packed with university students at lunchtime on a weekday. The seating indoors is benches so it's very casual. The outdoor seating is great on a sunny day. I'm not used to seeing such a younger/vibrant crowd so that felt good, reminded me a little of NYC where restaurants are always packed. Others have mentioned the thick cut fries and they do stay crispy and warm throughout your meal! I don't like soda or sweetened teas so I opted out of the "menu" (Americans call it a "value meal"), which was ~20 francs with a smaller (but still substantial) portion of fries (just the burger is around 14). I took the rest of my pommes frites home because the CHF 4.50 separate order portion is VERY large (see my posted picture), and they were soft but still flavorful. I'm not sure what kind of oil they use but very similar to Five Guys fries which uses peanut oil, the fries have a very distinctive taste. The only condiments available are ketchup and mayonnaise btw but at least they don't charge you per packet like most places! Others mentioned that the bread is quite nice but to be honest, I wasn't that impressed because I am a potato bread kind of gal so everything else falls short. The bread is thicker than your average fast food chain (e.g., Burger King, McDonald's) bun though. BK double whopper will cost you maybe a franc or two less than the Holy Cow burger so if you want to be healthier, I think the Holy Cow meat is much leaner, as almost all Swiss meat goes. I'm used to regularly using 80-85% fat ground beef so I'll have to get used to the much leaner beef here because it's just not as juicy/flavorful. The Mexicana burger was great with some spice/kick from the peppers and the guacamole that seemed to have plenty of lime juice in it. The salsa and guac made the burger very slippery though. Another diner in my group had the chicken burger which looked OK. I'm not used to seeing a lot of grilled chicken sandwiches (versus breaded and fried) and I know chicken breast is not cheap at the grocery store. Aleks, the Zurich CM! had a veggie burger but I didn't ask her how it was. But the menu has so many different types of burgers, I think everyone can find something that would appeal to him/her. read more

Damn, these are good burgers. And they're not like those fake burgers that have to pretend to be burgers - they ARE real burgers! 100% beef - unless you get the chicken, smarty pants - with none of that random crap or weird spices that other Swiss burgers have in them. (That's not a burger! That's Frikadellen!) The buns are also pretty fancy & have poppy seeds on them. I wolfed down the Bacon Avocado Beef in practically no time at all. I didn't order fries for myself because I'd had a whole weekend of fries-eating, but I stole a couple from some coworkers and they were pretty good too. I was very excited to try this new place as the concept and burger selection appeals to me. I tried the regular Big Cheese burger and the Bacon Avocado Beef burger on my two visits here and left fairly satisfied but not really wow'ed each time. Beef: The biggest downside of the place. Does not come close to the juiciness and tenderness of burgers across the pond, and asking for it to be done "medium" is not a task that can be executed well. On one of my visits it was completely raw in the middle and was inedible, they provided me with a new one that was then well-done, which I did not even mind at this point after my first one.. Bun / Cheese / Side: Very satisfying. The buns are fresh, so are all the other ingredients and they have a variety of options to choose from. Fries: My favorite part of my meal, I really like the way they are done here. Pretty thick but still crispy. Excellent burgers! I had the Big Cheese menü (set with fries and drink); the husband had the Bacon Avocado menü. The patties are made of meat that hasn't been ground into oblivion (which happens distressingly often in burger joints all over.) The burgers were perfectly cooked, not too under- or over-done, and--unusually for Switzerland--not incredibly salty. The fries, however, were standout. Thick-cut, crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and hot to the end. Very more-ish, even without condiments. Portion size was generous, and excellent value for money (19.90 for his, 14.90 for mine). Cafeteria style seating and posters with funny captions make for a casual dining experience. More or less stumbled into Holy Cow, and wow, it was amazing!!! I really love burgers, and Holy Cow had really great ones. The restaurant itself does not look like much. They have some seats outside, and some inside. I would not exactly call it the most cozy place in town, but it still has its own charm. There are no chairs, but long tables with long banks, which gives the restaurant more of a cantine feeling somehow. It certainly is great if you are in a big group. The selection of burgers is quite big. Of course they sell classic bacon cheese burgers, and also chicken burgers. But also more "exotic" kinds, like blue cheese burgers with jam (wonderful!!!), burgers in mexican style, burgers with avocado, etc... I loved that everything you get at Holy Cow is Swiss, the beef, the cheese, even the beverages! I got an ice tea and it was without doubt the best ice tea I ever had. You could actually taste that it was made of tea with lemon juice, as opposed to a certain other huge Swiss ice tea producer whose ice tea tastes like water with sugar. Meals cost around 20 chf and include a drink, a burger, and a good portion of french fries. Cut out of actual potatoes. Don't know where you get those anymore. Can't wait to go again!!! read more

I'm torn between a 3 and a 4 on this. I reckon I can always write an update... So I was disappointed in the burger. Maybe my expectations were too high. As an American and hearing that the owners were British, they were pretty high. But the concept itself has so much going for it. It's conveniently located; menu items are reasonably priced; service was friendly, knowledgeable, professional; the menu is creative; a free "sauce bar" with ketchup, mayo, etc.; and a cool, casual look and feel. Also, the fact that the manager came round to get our input was huge! This is what tilted the original 3.5 rating towards a 4 for me. So I ordered the "Elvis Blue Cheese" burger: gorgonzola, bacon, cajun mayo, red onion jam. Why is it called Blue Cheese when it's gorgonzola? It was actually more like a cheese sauce, but it could be that they are using the soft variety (gorgonzola dolce), whereas I would much prefer the pungency and texture of a harder gorgonzola piccante - I wasn't getting much cheese flavor at all. The same goes for the other ingredients - they were all a little meager. I couldn't make out the red onion jam, nor the cajun mayo, but I think the flavor combination could work. The bun: best bun I've had in Zürich - spongy, fresh, not dense, sprinkled with sesame and poppy (and a stray caraway seed here and there?). Unfortunately, the main organ - the beef - didn't impress. The burger was literally brought to me in the dining area as I was still standing, having just stepped away from the order counter 30 seconds prior. Naturally they have a real-time kitchen printer so that the order can be executed immediately, but even if they tossed that patty on the grill the second "elvis" rolled off my lips, it couldn't have been done that quick unless it had been cooked prior. This is a no go! As a result, my meat was on the dry side and dense, likely having undergone two cooking cycles. They may do this to speed up delivery, but I'll gladly wait for a juicy burger. So, they're on the right track... But the star of the show, the burger itself, wasn't transcendent. read more

First off... I'm an American, secondly, I have a grill at home that I make burgers on a pretty regular basis. Having said that, when I and my wife go out for dinner, in particular for a burger, we expect something really, really special. Added to this, I'd been told that Holy Cow has the best burgers in town. I'd say the best thing about Holy Cow is the ability to get a "Menu". If it helps, it adds fries and a drink (including a special beer made for the restaurant). Oddly, nowhere on any of the menu boards could I find an explanation for what a "Menu" constituted. Luckily, the friendly lady at the register answered my question. Anyway, the fries are excellent and the special brew is also quite good. The restaurant itself is really informal and kind of reminds me a bit of a playground at a farm. You sit at modern picnic tables (fitting) or the high top tables. They also do a pretty active "To Go" business. Now, to the burgers... my wife and I both had different choices from the 10 or so on their menu. Mine had bacon... (which makes EVERYTHING better)... in this case it did as well. Midway through my burger I asked my wife what she thought and she responded with.. "it's o.k.". Exactly my thought. For Zurich, it's quite an inexpensive meal and I've had food that I've spent a lot more money on and not liked so it's definitely worth checking out. read more

Good atmosphere, good music, crap beer and if you are looking circa classic American style burger this us NOT the place. They refuse to make substitutions from their menu burgers. I wanted a standard beef, lettuce, tomato, raw onion, mayo and ketchup. No deal and it's a shame cause the meet and bun are quality. The raw onion bit was funny. Many of their burgers have caramelized onion but they have no raw onions. Asked for the onion they used before it's cooked and was Again told we don't have raw onions. Oh well, kept a positive attitude and ordered one of the burgers on the menu as is because you don't have a choice anyway, not so good, onion jam equals sweet bbq sauce. Tried my wife's burger, the big cheese, and it was the same as bacon avocado beef except without the bacon and avocado. There was plenty of anticipation about this joint. Had heard things from Geneva, and Holy Cow Zürich was freshly opened. Added to this fact, the Zürich Yelpers were on a quest. Not for the Holy Grail, but for the best burger in Zürich - equally important! What this place has going for it - nice location: tucked away in the Niederdorfli, nice set-up: creates a nice mix between take-away burger joint and dine-in restaurant, there is a great little seating area outside for when the weather beckons (which can be rare in Switzerland ;) ) and the inside dining area is also a very inviting environment, great service: the staff are friendly and helpful, the manager even came outside to check that we were happy with everything - 10 points!, nice beer selection: provided by a swiss brewery in the french part - keeping the beer local which is something I appreciate, and not going for the usual Feldschlossen etc., Holy Cow even have their own label on one the beers - very nice touch, owning the beer and nice little bit of marketing ;), ripper of a menu: for a burger menu it is so extensive - everything on offer, so much so that it took me a while to work out what I wanted. Now for the all important "how was the burger??" The burger was good, but I'll be honest, I wasn't blown away by it.... Bun was good, but not outstanding, the meat was okay, but a bit gritty, the fries were big and chunky and I really enjoyed them. What this place has got going for it in comparison to other joints is the price - its very reasonable. 12 CHF for a burger, and add a drink and fries to that for 20 CHF. That's pretty damm sweet value when you compare to other joints. And the mayo and sauces are free :) (that's a big plus, and if you've lived in Switzerland you'll know what I'm saying ;) ).
