Been many times, decent food, pizza's good, but that one bartender in the evenings is just the rudest down right unfriendly unprofessional employee I've ever met, and it's not the first time. We walked out last night, won't be going back until the Scrementi's do something to correct things. read more

Stopped in today for lunch, and since we had visited about a month ago, we decided to include dishes from both visits in this review. This is an older, no-frills neighborhood bar that offers a nice variety of food and regularly posts its weekly specials on Facebook. While the atmosphere is definitely that of a local neighborhood bar, the kitchen puts out some surprisingly good food. Today's visit We started with the Cheese Lasagna with a Meatball and Garlic Bread. The lasagna noodles were cooked perfectly and had a nice blend of cheeses, all covered with a rich red sauce. It came with a fresh house salad topped with slivered carrots and diced tomatoes, which we enjoyed with a side of ranch dressing. We also ordered the Sausage with Hot and Sweet Peppers. The sausage was butterflied and appeared to have been cooked on the flat-top grill. It was tasty, although there were a few areas that had gotten a little too charred from the grill. The bun was soft and complemented the sausage nicely. The sandwich also came with a generous portion of onion soup, which was one of the highlights of the meal. The soup was rich and packed with onions, with a flavorful broth that had a nice Worcestershire note. A piece of bread was placed in the center of the bowl and topped with shredded mozzarella. The bread quickly soaked up the hot broth while the cheese melted perfectly, making for a very satisfying bowl of soup. Our previous visit During our visit about a month ago, we tried several items from the menu and specials. The Meatloaf Special was beefy and nicely seasoned. We also tried the Pork Chop Sandwich, which featured a pork chop sliced in half to fit the bun. It was cooked perfectly and made for a very enjoyable sandwich. We also ordered the Fried Whole Half Chicken. While the chicken had good flavor, we felt it suffered just a little from overcooking, possibly because it was served as a whole half rather than being disjointed. For sides, we tried the Creamy Spinach Soup and Onion Rings. The spinach soup was creamy and tasted fresh, while the onion rings were slightly overcooked but still had great flavor. Overall, this place is a great example of why you shouldn't always judge a restaurant by its surroundings. It may be an older, no-frills neighborhood bar, but the kitchen is putting out some really good food, with a nice variety of regular menu items and weekly specials. We enjoyed both of our visits and will definitely be back to try more of their specials and other items from the regular menu. It's always nice finding a local neighborhood spot that delivers good food without all the bells and whistles. read more

Never been, decided to try. I almost didn't based on reviews, but I am glad I came to check it out. Air was out so it was kind of hot, but the food was amazing. Italian beef with minestrone soup was great. I also got a slab of ribs to go as everyone there was recommending it. So glad I did, if it was that good reheated with extra sauce, then it must of been amazing fresh. I will make the trip back to try the pizza and burgers. It is a bar setting with gaming inside. Service was standard. Just after finishing, they had a free bingo night. Of course I had to stay and try my luck! read more

The Brown Onion - Italian beef with sweet peppers - Bars Near Me - Steger, Illinois

This is exactly what a neighborhood bar should be! Amazing food, heavy pours, and some of the best specials around. You get a lot of food for a very reasonable price, and the quality is always excellent. The staff goes above and beyond--they remember your name, your favorite drink, and make you feel like you've been coming there forever. Friendly service, great prices, and a fun atmosphere make this one of our favorite places. Highly recommend! read more

Saw a black woman at bar, apparently had been there since I sat down. Shift change, new staff member was angry for some reason. Nobody acknowledged me as I sat at a table. Black woman asked to order. Staff member snapped at her, was rude & said yes 'just a minute.' Black woman got up & left. I still sat.. she/staff member waited on 3 people who just sat at bar. I left since I guess nobody wanted to take my order. Between this place & Smokey Jo's having Fox News on.. Big fat nope spending my $ at both places. Racist much? read more

Don't know about the other specials, but the Wednesday half pound, $8.99 special is now a one quarter pound (1/4) hamburger, same price, same size (large) Bun. While it may have the same taste, it reminds one more of a White Castle hamburger now. Understandably, meat prices must be way up - but still.... read more

First off, the service is great! Lisa is a true server, bartendar, great front- gal! The ambiance is warm and inviting. I wonder if Lisa matches her outfits everyday with the soft tones of pink on the curtains. Goes very well with brown! The food is very well priced and served hot and on time! Thank you for our first Tuesday visit where the italian sausage w peppers go very well with the signature french onion soup! read more

There a server Angelica who was the best server and much needed after 12 hour shift. Food was terrific read more

Brown onion is a great restaurant/pub in Steger. They have daily specials that are very affordable. Monday is our normal Rib Night. I have yet to have a bad meal from Brown Onion. They also have bingo and other entertainment on various nights. read more

Ordered a beef sandwich. Came out the wrong dish the first time, with passive acknowledgment from the waitress. When I did receive my beef sandwich, it looked like elephant hide with a poor excuse of a pepper in a sorry bun. The food will make you cry. read more

Too bad!!!! Years ago the old Brown Onion was great. Great pizza etc. Service with a smile was not taught or learned by our server. Maybe she's having a bad day. Pizza was very underwhelming. Onion rings pretty good but a bit greasy. We won't be back. read more

The ribs are always delicious, and so is the French onion soup. Joan M You won't be disappointed! read more

I wish I could review their food or drinks, but it's impossible to even get a beer. We waited for almost 10 minutes... the bartender (an older woman) was standing right in front of us but would not acknowledge us. Another couple came in shortly after us. They left out of frustration, and we followed closely behind. We watched a customer reach behind the bar to serve himself... so maybe that's what you have to do if you want service there. read more

Came in for lunch. Excellent service! Husband had the steakarino sandwich and loved it. It was the special of the day. I had patty melt. Excellent! read more

My wife and I went there Friday night August 26th, we sat at the bar and the bartender/waitress was the most rudest person we have ever encountered. We had one drink and left, she basically told to leave, she was so mean. Its a shame. because when they opened, they had a Manager, and better staff. The food is good, but the staff is lousey now. We do not recomend this place until they fix the staff issues. read more

I went in with a girlfriend and let's just say the feeling that I had walked into the wrong place was very clear. They did not want to server us at all. The server was very rude so we got up and left. It's a shame that we still have to deal with crazy stuff like skin color. read more

First couple times was good, bartenders are a hit or miss with servers, Togo orders are usually wrong or just thrown in a bag like they don't care read more

Food quality is quite good at this establishment; I would consider it to be just as much a restaurant as a bar. The major issue I found with this place would be the fact that it can easily get crowded in there. Another issue would be noise level. Both can be remedied by coming at the right time of day (around lunchtime rather than in the late evening). Not the best place for a romantic date; more suited for a get-together with friends. Also a good place to eat for people intensely into watching sports on TV that don't want to miss a second of the "big game": they have seven flat-screen TVs in there to watch! read more

My father and I walked in to the place and the hostess just kinda looked at us, we asked to be seated at which point the hostess says "well these few booths are reserved but there are booths here and here (gesturing to booths) that you can sit at," so we just sat ourselves instead of being seated by the hostess. What was her purpose then? I still have no idea. Waitress came rather quickly and handed us the menus, and starts to rattle off the "specials," but forgot them halfway through. We said that's fine, we will just look at the menu. My father decided on one of their 8oz (1/2 pound) pub burgers, and because the menu said beef sandwiches come with cheese, sweet peppers, grilled onions, and mushrooms, I order the beef sandwich hold the mushrooms. Waitress says "oh those dont come on there anyway." Cool, no problem. We get our food, and my father's burger is definitely not 1/2 lb. It seriously looked like the frozen bubba burgers I make at home all the time for a quarter of the price. Meanwhile, my sandwich just has sweet peppers, and is rather dry. I send it back requesting the cheese I thought came on it, as well as some juice for the beef (I totally forgot about the grilled onions but didn't miss them anyway). Sandwich comes back and looks right finally, so I dig it. Tasted like rubber. The condiments at our table were very watery, and some of the bottles were even missing their caps. We get the bill and when its all said and done, it averaged out to about $16 each, for meals that neither of us finished. The only saving grace was that they carry decent craft beers. read more

some of the worse service I have ever had. I had to beg for drinks and to place an order. as the bartender was more interested in the regulars. I was there for over 3 hours. didn't bother to let me know if I used my card it would be an extra charge or I would have paid cash. I would never go back again at this point. read more

Basically a local pub with some standout menu items. While there is a hostess stand at the (rear) parking lot entrance, you seat yourself. Only been twice, but, surprisingly, for me the hamburger (Brawny Burger it's called) was outstanding, locally sourced meat I was told. Eight ounces, grilled (not fried) to order. Local steakhouse quality and taste in all respects, more tasty even than some area steakhouses. The server in both visits was very attentive and friendly, checking back a number of times. Onion soup could be thicker, with a cheese crust. Interesting other standard menu items to try. Purse hangers - and also USB outlets at the bar, I think. Seems to be space for an outdoor patio in the Summer. read more

Small hidden gem in Steger, IL . The bartender Kirsten is always very welcoming with prompt service considering she works the bar and tables. Steak-a-rino, the burger and bbq ribs are a few of my favorites specials. read more

Ordered take out. When I got home, 2 sides were missing & the tomato & lettuce were not on my sandwich. Called to let them know & spoke with Kirsten who stated she was the manager. I was immediately met with attitude and rudeness. I was given the option of going back to get my missing items or a credit. I asked if they could deliver the missing items as we had company & going back was very inconvenient & rude to my guests. I was told they don't deliver & advised again very rudely I could either come back or get a credit. I asked if I would be reimbursed for my gas & time & was rudely told 'no'...When I asked for the manager, Kirsten proceeded to declare her name and spell it. I asked the others in my party if they wanted the credit or to go back & advised them the person I was speaking with was not providing good customer service, to which was met with the call being disconnected. This is the THIRD time we've been met with incorrect/missing orders and blatant rudeness & attitude when brought to their attention. I guess they do not value their customers as such, they just lost a frequent one here. read more

My family and I walked into the restaurant and a customer told us we seat ourselves. After seating ourselves and waiting over ten minutes our waitress, Kirsten St. Pierre, comes over and takes our drink order. However, she gave us a look of disgust and spoke like we were wasting her time. As Kirsten walked away, my wife mentioned she felt uncomfortable with how rude the waitress treated us. I said we should stay and at least try the food. Kirsten came back after another ten minutes with our drinks. I asked her what dressings they had for salad. Kirsten replied, "The salad bar is over there so you can go find out for yourself." My wife was appalled by her statement and my seven-year old wanted to leave. I told Kirsten, "You are being rude. It is our first time here so I didn't know about the salad bar being over there." Kirsten replied, "No, you are rude for sitting yourself instead of waiting to be sat." Kirsten continued to tell us how swamped she is and to look around at all the customers she needed to take care of besides us. At that moment my wife said she wanted to leave, as I went to pay for the drinks Kirsten brought out, she rushed away from the table. We will not be visiting this restaurant again due to the unkind and unprofessional waitress we had. read more

Really wanted a cheeseburger, but there aren't a lot of good burgers options around here. My wife told me about the Brown Onion. I admit I'd never heard of it. We both got cheeseburgers and waffle fries carry out. It was quick, and the cheeseburger was soooo good. And huge. And my wife loved the wings - and she's really picky about wings. This could be our new go to take out place. read more

Restaurant is small but pretty nice inside. This is a branch of Scrementi's just south of this location. Waitress was cool. Had the Italian sausage that came like an elongated patty. The Brown Onion - West side of building. One of the entrances is on the north side of this restaurant - Bars Near Me - Steger, Illinois

Had the steak a rino sand with onion rings and the chicken Romano with fries. Chicken cooked perfectly and the OR and fries were great! Crispy and HOT! Delicious. Very friendly and efficient server. We will be back for the pizza we saw going out read more

This is a very very small scale remake of the original Brown Onion restaurant that was in South Chicago Heights for many years. The Scrementi family is still at the helm. The ambience is pleasant, with the bar being the focal point of the room. The menu is very limited, with the dishes offered pretty basic n common.....steak sandwich, beef sandwich, hamburger, Italian sausage sandwich. You like meat???? They got the freaking meat! If you don't like meat, or heavy fat laden foods, you might be out of luck. Don't expect anything modern or trendy......the $11 non meat salad consisted of iceberg lettuce, large chunks of raw veggies & squares of some kind of cheese. Meh. The service was good. Would I go back? Probably not. read more

I've never felt more UNWELCOME and MISTREATED IN MY ENTIRE LIFE‼ I'm a resident of Steger, and have been for over 10 years, I literally live right up the street and my friend had a taste for bar food so we stopped at WORSTTT mistake ever. ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE BLACK OR A PERSON OF COLOR, DO NOT STOP HERE FOR ANYTHING!!! From the moment we walked in all eyes were on us but I didn't think anything too deep. The bar tender was the snootiest most racist bitch I ever came across. She kept side eyeing me and my friend when she spoke to other customers she was enthusiastic and full of life BUT on the other hand when she spoke to us she refused to make eye contact. So I got my drink and my friend got her meal, which she felt tasted horribly it was cold and had no flavor so she took a bite and pushed it to the side. The bartender seen this and rolled her eyes, I tried a bite and couldn't agree more. She asked if we liked it and we both said no. My friend then mentions she was ready to pay, and this bar tender literally YELLED ACROSS THE BAR "WELL YOU HAVE TO FRIGGIN PAY". I was absolutely disgusted, my friend said CALMLY might I add. "That's not what I said I'm simply ready to pay". Usually I wouldn't leave a long ass detailed description about a bad experience but I truly believe this woman went out her way to not only make us uncomfortable but also try to get us to react in a negative way. Shit like this happens too often and we just let it happen, WELL I'm telling my story. You found the RIGHT PEOPLE OF COLOR lol lady and I really hope y'all racist ass go OUT of business!! read more

The food is awesome. This establishment is owned by one of the Scrementi brothers. If anyone remembers the old place off of Chicago Road then you can imagine the vibe this place has. It has the old eat and meet place vibe. Food is great as always. Service was good when I went. Will be returning when I come home on visits. read more

I'm so glad that I chose to spend my Valentines Day at Brown Onion. The atmosphere was perfect... roses everywhere with heart decor. Very cozy!!! The service was great. I was greeted at the door and they told me where a charging port was so that I could charge my phone while I ate. The food was delicious and the chef even came out to check on me!!! I felt so special I'll definitely be coming back in the future. They really turned my day around and I'll never forget that. read more

UGH... Where do I begin?? We were immediately sat, where our table had menus and silverware on it. It took the server 10 minutes to come to our table and ask us for our drinks. We started out with just ordering water. It took her 10 minutes to bring that! I got up to go to the washroom, and I told my husband to meet me in the car, that I did not want to stay. When I came out of the washroom, our server was taking his order. I should have just kept walking out the door. What a hot mess! The soup of the day was actually chili. And it was just very mediocre. I thought that they would bring that out first, but it came with our sandwiches. My chili was ice cold. Had to send it back. My husband ordered Italian beef sandwich with mozzarella. $0.95 for cheese. What a rip off. I had a patty melt, which was very mediocre at best. I doubt very seriously that I'll waste my or money here again. ********** UPON LEAVING... I used the washroom yet again, and as I was exiting, I overheard our server tell the "hostess "...Oh my God!! That woman was a pain in the ass!! Well this pain in the ass just removed your tip, sweetheart. read more

I have ordered from this establishment many times. However, the last few times my fries have been hard. When I called to explain that not only my fries but my coworkers fries were hard, some lady answered the phone with an attitude. While explaining the situation, the lady blamed me for my fries being hard stating that "I took over an hour to get to the restaurant." I was told that my order would be ready in 15 minutes, I waited an additional five minutes to make sure my order would be done because when I came on time for a previous order, it was not done. Anyway, the lady was rude, continuously cut me off, and then proceeded to say well "what do you want me to do and what do you want." I will not be ordering from here ever again!!! Very rude lady who appeared to already have an attitude when I went to pick up my food. She needs to be taught better customer service skills or understand that she is in the wrong profession to be speaking to customers in a demeaning manner. If I could give zero stars for the service, I would. read more
