Took the "Date Night. Loved the other students. It started me into a nightly kitchen routine when I used to go out every night or bring back something for dinner. I'll be honest - I've only been into this store a couple of times so I don't know how valid my review is BUT here we go: This store totally embodies to me what Brooklyn is all about. Its mom and pop, hip and friendly. Its a smallish store with eclectic kitchen wares (both vintage and new) and the staff seems incredibly friendly. When I came in a class was being held on butchering and as soon as I walked in they made sure to warn me not to look if I was sensitive to that which was very kind. I have yet to take a class there but they offer several one time classes a month that look to mostly be under $50 which is awesome. read more

This little cooking supply shop is the definition in neighborhood tailored retail. I don't imagine a ton of people cook their own meals in Brooklyn (based on my loose survey of fellow Williamsburgers) but when they do, they do it in style. The Brooklyn Kitchen has a full array of Le Creuset and All Clad pots and pans, designer ice cube trays, cookie cutters, and great cook cooks. Whenever i need a special dish to cook with, they have it. The shop also offered cooking lessons, knife skills classes, and a slew of other ways to better improve your culinary IQ. I haven't been able to sign up for a class because even though i check the schedule religiously, they are always full two months in advance. Every time i enter there is always a deep conversation going on in the corner between employee and customer about the finer points of pressure cookers or something else that just makes me feel all warm and cozy. I love it. It's a great place to shop and get answers to all your culinary quests. And they also give out Edible Brooklyn for free. read more

I had the most delightful experience tonight at the Brooklyn Kitchen, that I (obviously) can't keep to myself. My friend and I signed up for the skillet cooking class, and since this was my first cooking class, I came with no expectations. The class was fantastic and the instructor made it a fun, collaborative experience. I walked out with some great new skills, a stack of recipes, and a full belly of mac & cheese, fried chicken, and beer. Class was totally reasonable - $60. I left with a schedule of their class offerings and can't wait to try some of the other classes. read more

Mixed experience. My Fish 101 class was excellent and we got hands on training on how to make each dish (and boy did they taste great). But the Meats class was awful. It was basically a two hour lecture where you watch someone else do all the cooking. I would give this place another chance though. read more

We did the pizza making class at the Williamsburg location and it distinctly felt like it was put on as cheaply as possible - there were no meat toppings & the small amount of beer provided ran out well before the pizzas were ready to eat. There was also not a lot of guidance / instruction and Mel, the chef's assistant, in particular had a very abrasive attitude that ruined the experience for us. read more

OOk this place is cool!! A friend and I signed up for the basic cooking class about 2 Months ago with Cheft Brendan. The class was $35 each! and a total of about 9 of us. which was nice because it wasnt that crowded. I found the class very helpful and the staff very friendly. I was given a gift of The Brooklyn Kitchen's pasta-making class and found it to be extremely well-taught, enjoyable and tasty. The instructor, Shanna, clearly knew her stuff, communicated it with warmth and confidence and provided useful feedback to students. The classroom was clean, well-equipped (a beer fridge was a nice touch for those of us coming directly from work) and brightly lit. All steps in the process were demonstrated and students afforded the opportunity to practice under Shanna's supervision. The school provided ingredients of the highest quality, resulting in a most enjoyable meal of linguini alla Nonna and ravioli in a sage-brown butter sauce. Highly recommended. read more

The best kitchen supply store! I used to live down the street from here and would go in while doing my laundry dry cycle. Amazing collection of vintage cook-ware and dead-stock items you can not even find on eBay! Great little gadgets, books, pots, pans, and almost everything you need. It might lack the cheap throw-away items you can find at the Bowery kitchen supply stores but why not just have the quality. They also have a book club and cooking classes. I adore this store and any person interested in food should check it out. read more

I was given a gift certificate for $200 to the Brooklyn Kitchen, activated the code and tried to make a reservation for a class coming up. The code didn't work so I tried to contact the company by phone and got no answer + The VM box was full so I couldn't leave a message. I then tried emailing them a number of times with no response. Had to have the gift giver contact her CC company and dispute the charge. Total letdown. read more

Came here after work for a pasta making class. Browsed the store since me and my friend were there early. It's a fun store to browse, just feels artsy and trendy, and as if they share a passion for the kitchen, just like their customers. Saw some cook books, adorable tea and coffee instruments, a section/wall of knives, pots and pans, stainless steel, cast iron, etc, and a back section of produce. Oddly enough, not all of the produce were that fresh. Touched a few peppers and they were so soft, my hand nearly sunk in! But whatever- I didn't come there to shop really, I came there to learn how to make pasta! Class started promptly. The teacher- I forget her name, but she was efficient, friendly, informative- was a bit frazzled, as she didn't have her usual volunteer there to help her. But I found her very charming and maternal in a way, and I appreciated that kind of vibe because it somehow encouraged me to learn. She did a fairly long and thorough demo, about thirty minutes or so before we went to the tables/stations where there was flour and other ingredients waiting for people. And then we got right down to work. Along the way, she walked around to check in on us, help people, as well as did the obligatory "It's looking good" or "good job, but it could use more flour" and the whole experience was very smooth. After everyone's dough looked good, with a final check from her, we wrapped it up in saran wrap and refrigerated it. Then we worked with the dough she had pre-made before the students arrived, and split up into teams to use the crank. Honestly, that damn machine was the most fun part of the evening! Sprinkle some flour on it, roll it through, adjust settings, repeat as needed, and you have this silky smooth piece of dough, and we had two options: fettucine noodles which would go with the fresh marinara sauce, or the ravioli for the herb/spinach mixture. We decided on ravioli and then used the mold, scooped some filling and voila, we were done! It was a lot of steps, but also not that difficult if you followed directions. Then she made a brown butter sage sauce with a pinch of lemon juice at the end of cooking, and tossed it with the ravioli. OMG! So delicious. You taste the buttery/herb flavor and then the acidity of the lemon juice hits you, so it's a one two punch of alternating flavors. Overall it was a long class. Close to three hours, by the time we finished and ate and mingled, asked questions. I like how they don't rush and usher you out. They probably would if they had another class after, but either way, they let people enjoy the entire experience rather than kicking us out so they could clean up earlier or go home earlier, etc. It really speaks volumes as to how they treat people and customers. Also beer was given to the class, while she was demonstrating, so they really tried to make it a relaxing experience, knowing people were coming after work and such. And we get a recipe booklet to take home. Depending on my schedule, and the classes they offered, I would definitely come back again. read more

I stopped in a while ago and wasnt impressed This time around i needed something and realized this stores worth I needed rennet for cheesemaking which i couldnt find anywhere other than online They had plenty along with other hard to find supplies This isnt just a kitchen supply place Its a cooks supply place especially for those who like to make their own foods/drinks Whether its for cheese making, sausage making, pickling, brewing, Yes their prices tend to be higher But much cheaper when you factor in shipping if you purchase online, and worth the convenience of having the item today. read more

I never walk into this store and leave empty handed. It's dangerous. Somehow I always convince myself to upgrade my appliances to more expensive and sleeker models, or that I need a new cook book, or that a tiny spatula will improve my cooking skills. A great place for presents too. read more

Brooklyn Kitchen, you make my heart sing a bit. No, I'm not a 'regular' customer, but I am a bit of a fan. Are prices a bit higher than Wal-Mart/Target/Bed Bath & Beyond? Yeah, I'm guessing. I didn't do any specific price comparing. But here's the thing, even for a Clinton Hill resident, I'd rather hop on the B48 bus up to Billyburg to explore a smaller store than into the city or to Target. It's not perfect, but I feel like this is a great option for the less easily found items like canning supplies. The staff seems pretty friendly and knowledgeable, and not only that, but the store shows up in different ways at different Bklyn cooking competitions, which is pretty awesome. :D read more

It's a really cool....ok it's pretty hard to label the place. It's a foodie playground kind of. They have a good butcher shop in the back. They actually sell chicken schmaltz. They have a really small produce section which features some not so common things like lady apples. This place also has tons of kitchen gadgets and wares for sale. It's a fun place to browse around for things that you want but probably don't need. read more

We all got sufficiently tipsy and sampled some of brooklyn's finest "artisanal" foods from The Brooklyn Salsa Company and Tempeh Shop. The Cooking Meats with Confidence class was a lot of fun. The instructor was knowledgeable, funny, and importantly, practical. We learned several basic techniques, learned about different cooking oils and cuts of meats, temperatures at which to cook different cuts, and walked away feeling more comfortable with cooking at high heat (which I'm always terrified of in my tiny kitchen). And of course we got to taste everything at the end. This is a good spot for a date night but also great to go on your own like I did. I'll probably check out the knife skills class next. read more

The Brooklyn Kitchen is amazing--great selections of meats, cheeses, vegetables and fruits, besides a lot of gadgets and food stuffs that are hard to acquire. ie. they have harissa paste! I am jonesing to go back, but I don't want to buy everything. The purchasing will have to wait. Depending on the item, it can be expensive or inexpensive. read more

One of those places that makes you proud to live in Brooklyn. The staff is very knowledgeable about all the items (and food) for sale here (and elsewhere). I walked in one day asking casually about the best knife to be had for about $50. What ensued was an incredible offering of knowledge encompassing metallurgy, knife-shaping, aesthetics, and economics. I was impressed, to say the least. To anyone looking for vintage cast-iron, they restore, re-season, and re-sell 1930's Griswolds for reasonable prices. For anything you'd need in a kitchen, I'd highly recommend it. Just don't go in there if you're not willing to part with some cash, because trust me, you will. read more

My friends and I took their Hands-On Pie Making class with Lauren here in August, and while I loved what I learned, the experience wasn't exactly what I'd hoped for (or expected, given the price). There are definitely some serious points for ambiance. The whole place is gorgeous, with lots of exposed brick, industrial fixtures, and fun quirky touches. When you take a place, you walk through the main floor, where there are tons of artisanal (mostly local) products to browse, look at the price tag for, and quickly walk away from. You get to the class area at the back, where Brooklyn Brewery beers are chilling for you to help yourself to throughout the class. The class area has lots of counter space, feels big and open, and has amazing high-quality appliances and supplies. Lauren, the instructor, clearly knew her stuff. The pies we made were delicious. She had one baking when we first came in, and while our pies were cooking, we all got a slice of hers to enjoy with some freshly whipped cream. She taught us some useful techniques, like the picture-ready lattice top crust, and the pie I made and brought home (a peach and blueberry, which is officially my new favorite combination) was honestly just yummy. Despite that, half of the fun of a class like this is the experience, and that still had some room for improvement--both in terms of leaving with serious expertise in the topic of the class and in having a really good time being there. Lauren had a tendency to problem-solve by stepping in and fixing things, rather than explaining to the student what s/he could do and why. That meant that we all left with really high-quality pies, but since then, I've had a hard time creating a crust that was as good as the one she helped me make because I don't have a good sense of what I can do to fix any problems on the fly. This shows that while she might really know her stuff, she doesn't have a ton of experience as an instructor. Considering that the class cost $70, I'd expect more. And while the ambiance should have lent itself to being a really great social opportunity--a great space, free beer, a fun activity--there was minimal conversation and the environment was pretty muted. I came with a couple friends, and we all felt a little obtrusive just chatting and joking around as we were baking. All in all, it's great for people who want to eat good food and leave with good food in hand. But if you're looking for a really fun social occasion or for leaving being able to perfectly replicate the skills you "learned" in the class, this isn't really the right class for you. read more

I was leaning towards a four out of five star rating for the Brooklyn Kitchen, but taking into consideration the great grocery area, meat market, and wide array of kitchen equipment, I had to go up to a five. I've taken several classes here, some of which I've liked more than others. They're always organized and informative. Overall this is a great place and resource. If you take a class here, chances are you'll have a good time. Nice people, good food, teachers varying from acceptable to amazing, and free beer. What more do you want? read more

Had a phenomenal experience taking the fresh pasta making class with Ken. He was great and the entire class was hands on and a lot of fun. We got to bring home a ball of dough so we can make fresh pasta ourselves but we also made ravioli and fettuccine that we ate towards the end of the class. It was some of the best pasta I have ever had and the sauce Ken made was soooo good. Highly recommend the cooking classes here for anyone - it's great for any type of gift, date or even a family activity. read more

When a cooking class at The Brooklyn Kitchen was added to the itinerary of our leadership retreat it made me very happy. I had no idea what to expect. We had a ball! It's a great idea for a small conference group. Ken was excellent teacher and chef! I don't eat chicken, wheat or dairy so he made a special plate for me -- portabello mushrooms cooked in a reduction of blood oranges, balsamic vinegar and golden raisins. Lord! Decadent. And he made a dessert that would please everyone --a flour-less chocolate cake! I still cook for others so learning the tricks to perfectly roasting a chicken was incredibly helpful. Out program coordinator made a special music playlist and the ambiance and decor were cool. The pre-class treats were pork, baguette slices, cheese and wine so there was no snacking for me but Ken's care with my meal and the salads/dressings we prepared made up for it!!! Loved this experience. Now, I know why cooking classes are becoming social events and hot date nights. :-) I eat medicinal meat --organic lamb --once a month or every other month so will definitely be visiting the butcher at Brooklyn Kitchen. read more

what wonderful thing could i say about this place that hasn't been said already. No doubt it is very expensive, and having been to enough gourmet butchers and specialty shops i can safely say it is indeed a tad over priced, but this place does have it all and everything is of good quality. I shop here too often, in fact, because it does take its toll on my pocket book. the butchers are very helpful and will cut meat pretty much anyway that you want it. they are also very knowledgeable as well. you can ask them anything. Just don't ask them to smile because they won't. c'est la vie, not there to make friends. But they have fantastic kitchenwares, great spices, a nice selection of mushrooms, kimchis and other unique items, and of course the classes. they are always sold out for a reason. they are great. check out their calendar, they have good ideas of how to have completely different cooking, etc classes. love this place read more

This is a great place in a slightly out of the way location. If I ever want to take culinary classes or to get into beer brewing this would be the place to go. Today I was looking for kefir starter GRAINS which they said they had. But they didn't, as it turned out. They had a powder mix for a one time batch; not grains which last potentially forever. They didn't know the difference either, not helping my impression of them in the kefir department. It is a bit unusual, I know, but it would help if they learned a little more about what they are selling re kefir so that they will give customers the right information about what they stock. Still, the is a pretty terrific store in other respects and I would go back again and again for other thongs. read more

Absolutely top notch selection of kitchen goods and food. Prices are high but every item is such high quality so you know it's worth it. The entire store is curated so they only have the best of the best brands. Impressive selection of cookbooks too. Fresh, local produce is great. Wonderful baking products. Nice dairy case with really interesting things. If you're a foodie and/or cooking something complicated or exotic, Brooklyn Kitchen probably has what you need. The best part though is definitely Meat Hook in the back, grass-fed and grass finished beef, pasture raised chicken, etc. They have a wonderful selection of really, really fresh meat. They also usually have offal, chicken/beef bones, all different types of fat (duck, beef, leaf lard, etc). We picked up some dehydrated liver treats for our dog which he went nuts for. The people who work the counter are so so nice and friendly and helpful. Just be careful, it's very easy to run up the bill with all that delicious meat! read more

The Brooklyn Kitchen's new location looks really great. The selection is varied and surprising, if (as mentioned in other reviews) not totally comprehensive. It feels a little bit like the emphasis is on gifts and impulse purchases, rather than just a solid stock of anything you might need to stock your kitchen. That said, there's no shortage of awesome things to buy, including Japanese condiments, folding French knives, great spices, and Duralex glasses. The Meat Hook, the affiliated butcher shop, has great (if pricey) cuts of meat on offer, along with excellent cornbread, all sold by a jocular bunch of dudes whose clothes are spattered liberally with blood. I haven't participated in any of the Lab classes, so I can't comment on them, but I think it's a great idea, and I hope to attend one soon. Overall, the Brooklyn Kitchen has a really nice, unique, and well-considered feeling. Anytime I'm near this stretch of the BQE I make it a point to stop by. read more

This is a review of the store. I could spend hours in this store and frequently do, just walking around and looking at items on the shelves. This store reminds me of the old timey stores that were common in New York when I was growing up. It's not pretentious, it's not overly expensive and has a wide variety of goodies, from the sausages to the hot sauces to the useful and novelty cooking tools. I can't wait to take a cooking class there. read more
