Hands down the best class I ever took. Bryan is a really fun teacher and his personality keeps the class lively. He has vast experience and it shows in the meticulous advice he offers. Examples include how to do things right in order to prevent fines from the health department and mitigate the chance of making customers sick, appropriate garnishes, glassware, dishwashing, tips on how to optimize bartending efficiency, how to deal with trouble makers and the form of documentation required to protect the business. Bryan is a wonderful teacher and a really fun guy to be around. I would highly recommend this class / social club to anyone interested in any form of bartending. NY Bartending school, as the name indicates, is a bar and a bar tending school. I came here with my coworkers for a team building event. It started off with provided finger foods such as cheese, grapes, and crackers with a glass of wine. Then we choose 3 drinks to make. All the material is provided and the instructors demonstrate how to craft the drink. The great part is that there isn't any limit on how you want to make it... So you can make it extra strong :) I think my favorite drink to make was the Negroni, as the instructor taught us several ways to make it. Overall a great experience! I came for a team offsite that lasted 2 hours long. The interior of the classroom is fairly dim and reminds me of a classy bar. Plenty of seating inside. It starts with a choice between red or white wine. They also have a cheese platter setup with prosciutto, grapes, crackers, guacamole, and hummus. We pre-selected 3 cocktails: Smoldering Negroni Estate, The Tempests Blood, and Fire in the hole. The negroni estate was intensely smokey. The tempests blood and fire in the hole were the smoothest drinks. The procedure was fairly mechanical and they told us what to pour. The base ingredients were all usually 0.5 ounces while the alcohol strength varied from 1-2 ounces depending on the individual's choice. I personally would have liked to hear more about which ingredients blend well together, but with a group of 12, they only told the first few individuals while the ingredients were passed down the bar. Overall, everyone had a fantastic time and the 2 hours felt like the right pace for all those drinks. read more

4 Classes for $595...That is not enough time to learn what you need to know in order to feel prepared to work at a bar. It is way too much money for what you learn. Everything they teach you can learn by yourself by watching videos and buying a mixing kit online. My advice Practice by yourself at home and then applying to barback positions to then get a promotion as a bartender , or just try to get a bartending gig. Bartending school is kind of a scam when you think about it. I spent all that money to play with the mixing kits and nothing else, they speed through the process of learning drinks because of the limited time, if there were more classes I would understand the pricing, but only four classes is truly crazy. You dont learn much at all and if what you wanted to accomplish was getting a job you will most likely without needing to go to school at all. I just went to NY Bartending School for the "free trial" class as I have been wanting to go for a bartending license at least for fun for some time. As a heads up, the free trial class consists of one of their teachers talking on a PowerPoint on selling you to pay them to come take their classes and there's not much actual hands on stuff you get to do. You partner with someone else and each of you learn how to make one cocktail. My partner made a cosmopolitan and I made a chocolate martini. You do learn some useful tips like how to pour a proper ounce and how to shake, but if you're looking for something more hands on, you likely will have to cough up the cash. I decided to put down the $70 deposit to "lock in" their special rate, which I am 99% sure is a gimmick to close the deal to make you sign up before you leave. I doubt the rate is any different from any other time, but regardless, I have been wanting to do it for a long time anyway, so worst case scenario is that I lose the $70 if I never take the actual course. If you are on the fence about this place versus other schools, don't get pressured into signing up here. Definitely do your due diligence before you spend the cash. It's around $700 for the course, so you better make sure you want to do it! read more

Very helpful, a lot of fun, teachers are very nice. You are always welcomed to come back and practice. But! It's pretty hard to get a job. You have to consider that you won't get your first job right away. You also have to study a lot by your own. You should also keep in mind that you have to spend some $$$ and time on tips certification, food handling permit (not required, but recommended), black outfit, you also have to spend some money on printing out your resume and resume paper (it's not that much, but for a student like me every dollars counts) and yeah it's better to get an unlimited metrocard because you are gonna have a lot of interviews!!!! But you have to understand that you have to work hard to become a good bartender, it's better to buy some books about wine/beer/liquor/mixology, follow bartenders on YouTube and study. I wanted to start to bartend for some time but had no experience. Didn't know how or where to start. One day somebody told me that I should check bartending schools. So I did. New York Bartending school caught my eye right away so I decided to check it up. Once I got there person behind the desk answered all my questions without any pressure that I had to sign up. Then she told me that I can check up the class that was going on at the moment. So I did. Five minutes after I decided that this is it. I sign up right away and left 80$ deposit. They also have free trial but I felt it's unnecessary for me. It's a 40 hour class. You have an option to split that in one or two weeks. If you decide to do it all in one week (like me) it's Monday through Friday, 8 hours a day. Or two week period, 4 hours a day. My instructor was Alan and he was amazing. I learned a lot from the class. Before I didn't even know how to hold the bottle properly while pouring. After the 40 hour class there is a written test and after you pass it it's a "20 drinks in less then 6 minutes" test. It sounds scary but it's actually not that hard. If you really wanna do it and you practice you'll pass it! I felt like some of my classmates didn't try hard enough. They were always late to the class and from the lunch break. Once you graduate they let you come back anytime and practice, even do the whole class again for free! That offer doesn't expire!! I can't believe that some Yelpers are giving them bad review because the school didn't find them a job. C'mmon that's a nonsense. Which school does that? They prepare you as much as they can, help you with the resume, you can even train in one of the bars they work with and practice with real customers. So after I graduated I went through their forum where you can find bars/ restaurants that are looking for bartenders. I applied with the bar that contacted the school about open bartending position. And.... I got hired! I've been a bartender now for year and a half and I'm enjoying it! read more

I don't quite understand the 2-3 star criticisms I read on here regarding the fact that NY Bartending School doesn't explicitly bend over backwards to hand you a job once you complete their 2-week course. I've always thought that was a given, this being NYC and all. To be fair, however, I did go on the main website and under the "Job Placement" category, they list an extensive amount of services. While I can understand that it's implied that they'll really go out of their way to find you employment, it must be said that YOU have to put the work into doing it. My instructor Hezekiah James has no problem with you contacting him after you graduate for advice, personalized resume critiques, and for you to pick his brain regarding this industry. I find that to be a very resourceful aspect. As I expected, this course provides you with the FOUNDATION of what a bartender goes through so that when you end up getting that first job that requires 2 years of experience (which presumably you don't have), you at least have quite a few skills to show for the 2 weeks you spend here, and you won't look like a complete jackass when you're behind the bar for the first time. Make no mistake, you WILL learn how to bartend. No one is claiming that it's a replacement to real world experience, but they will work hand in hand. I can understand how frustrating it is to break through the first job with such tough hiring requirements. After all, how can one get 2 years of experience if no one will hire them in the first place? It's a big catch-22 and yet, that's the standard. You'll learn how to make many mixed drinks, the relevant histories of various spirits, wines, and beer. You'll get practical advice like the importance of being a good conversationalist and being yourself as well as pitfalls (getting drunk on the job, overpouring, miscounting the bar bank). It's a pretty information heavy course but well worth it, in my opinion. Also, after about the 3rd day, you'll engage in much needed hands-on training making drinks and performing speed drills (with colored water, of course). If I had to nitpick, I would've liked a brief lesson on pouring draft beers. Fortunately, I've been behind the bar often in restaurants I've worked in to know how to work most of them. read more

I wanted to pick up a second job, and thought about Bartending... After checking out two other schools in NYC I settled on this one. Yes $595.00 may be steep for some, but I feel it was the better choice, after all you get what you pay for right?!? I had Jessie, a high energy instructor who knew a lot, but sometimes you wanted him to slow down a bit more, And his music taste leaves much to be desired But I digress... The only "bad" things I can say about the school are although they do offer POS instruction, it's a power point. The best instructions are hand on, so really it was just watching how to use it, instead of actually showing you how. Then there wasn't enough actual sampling of liquors. There is another school that does use REAL alcohol & is cheaper. And finally, the showing of Draft beer was basically "Look this is a Draft system.." (but all of the pertinent information is in the book) Other than that I must say that I have no regrets about taking this class and that all the staff were excellent and professional (even the lady instructor who chained smoked and smelled like a ashtray as she walked past 40x in a day) I will recommend this school. read more

I was very hesitant about attending a Bartending school when I've heard of all the "Bartending school is BS" talk. But I tried it anyway because I didn't want to work my way up from a hostess to a waitress/bar back, to finally a bartender. I'm truly HAPPY I didn't listen to all the people who tried to stop me. I enrolled in the NYBS in November 2014. I know it's more on the pricy side, but from going to other training programs that were really bad I go with the motto "You get what you pay for", and I definitely did. I was in Erica's class and it was really fast paced but really fun. All of the people in my class were really nice and eager to learn as well. The lectures were actually very informative and you will learn useful things about alcohol. Other bartending schools do not even offer lectures at all so this was a plus. The course was over before I knew it but you can always go back to retake the class again. At the end of the course you have to do a speed drill which was really intimidating at first, but it comes naturally to you because of all of the practicing we did. Anthony, the career advisor is amazing. He is a resume God (seriously). He gave me really great tips, and guess what? I actually got hired somewhere! Yes it took a few interviews but it's actually possible to get a job with a nice resume and confidence. If you take the course and your job search seriously, there's no reason why someone will not hire you. Especially when you have people to help guide you. Honestly, I do not regret any of the money spent. It was a very good investment. If you want to try for yourself go to the free trial class like I did. Once I did that, I knew this was the best mixology course in NYC. The school speaks for itself. I learned so much going there and I am actually confident with my certificate. I went to NYBTS about a year ago. Here is the reality of it. Most people in the industry have not gone to school and don't respect the ones that have. What you will learn in the week class is what others have learned over a few years being a bus boy, bar back, waiter, caterer and then finally bartender. But along the way most of them have also picked up a lot of bad habits. NYBTS is a great program for getting a jump start. But getting a job will be on your own as with any profession. I am not a hot young white girl, I didn't have any other experience, I don't know much about sports and I don't have a following. BUT I am very successful. Here are my tips: 1. The practice bars are a joke. A great marketing point. But you have to wait, you're behind the bar for like 10 minutes, your friends and fellow classmates buy the drinks, you can't touch the registers and everyone mostly orders the drinks they've been making in the class. 2. Keep taking the class until you find a job. It helps with your pour counts, remembering recipes, comfort level behind the bar, etc. 3. Further your education. Get your TIPS certification (you can do it online), get your NYS Food Handlers Certificate. Check out some more specific classes that other places offer. (Astor Center, even Apothéke has classes ). READ (whiskey, wine, spirits, herbs, sports, local news) 4. DO NOT put that you went to bartending school on your resume. You can put TIPS, NYS Food Handlers Certificate and any specific classes. Try and speak face to face with the hiring manager. I bartered some technical knowledge of computers to get my foot in the door on the worst night of the week with no pay. Within a month I had two shifts. Now the computer work is extra and I get scheduled on the busiest nights. 5. What you learn in the class isn't Gospel. It's a great base. But every bar is different. A highball glass in one place might look like a rocks class in another. 6. Don't be lazy. read more

They have reasonable prices for everything, they let you cater in food, the staff is beyond friendly, and it is a great room/environment. I decided to take this class because I had gotten laid off from my job. After realizing finding a job in my field was getting slimmer and slimmer, I knew I needed another skill to make money off of. I didn't want to go back to school for years or have a shit ton of money to pay off once school was over. Some how I stumbled upon this school, which I felt was going to help me become more knowledgeable and gain the skills & confidence to become a bartender. I took the 2 week course and learned a lot in the process. Drink recipes, garnishes, proper glass wear, the differences between, whiskeys, wines, rums, etc.... I just graduated yesterday so I have no how well the job placement works, but what I do know is that I have more experience than I did 2 weeks ago and it will be more about me being assertive and getting out there and finding a job for myself. I was a little skeptical of this place due to the lack of bad reviews, and the slightly higher price for the classes. I attended the mixology course and I am glad that I did. There really are no bad things to say about this school. The instructors are very attentive and laid-back, nothing is stressful. If you're worried that you won't be able to keep up, you should sign up anyway, because the classes are structured so that you will be comfortable and are able to pass. If it just so happens that you don't, there are many chances to practice and get better. The environment is very comfortable, all types of people from all walks of life. The staff are all willing to chat and have fun. I think it applies to everything, but asking and speaking up are always important when there's doubt or confusion. I recently completed the drinks and preparation course at the New York Bartending School and couldn't be happier about my decision to attend. Although a novice I'm passionate about food and drink presentation. I was looking for something where I could learn more about bartending and develop functional skills to do the job. I feel like I picked the right school. What I really appreciated was the candor and integrity Bryan has based his business off. They're immediately upfront that 1) bartending is mostly about personality and 2) a certificate does not guarantee you a job. They also don't attempt to hard sell you and they put in the effort to make sure you're comfortable with the experience. They offer a free introduction course, so you can have the confidence and certainty that training is something you want to do. After taking the introductory course with Mike it further reinforced my desire to do the week-long class. I found the entire course to be incredibly informative. Most importantly Mike provides functional knowledge. You don't feel like you're getting useless information. What really drove the experience home was Mike's teaching style. He does a great job of giving you the right support without coddling his students. He can motivate, inspire confidence, challenge you, and make you laugh simultaneously. He's got vast experience and does a great job humanizing himself by not only telling you about his awesome experiences but also sheds light on the mistakes he's made in the field. This place is the real deal. I went in knowing my favorite few drinks, but here you are transported to another world where you are behind a real bar with all the stuff needed included real ice chambers, speed racks, top shelf liquor and plastic garnishes. Add to that the staff that not only makes you know the drink recipes, they want to get you working faster so you can go out and work in a real bar. They teach you tricks on making more than one drink at a time and they don't leave out the details like which glass to use, the correct garnish, and even the straws. I took the basic bartender course and I will be going back for the more advanced mixology class where they will get into more details about wines, beer, spirits, and that course is behind a real bar with live booze. I'm looking forward to going back and practicing (included in the price of the course,) and using the online tools they give. They also gave a lecture on landing a job, so I'll update you after I land something. The course surpassed my expectations; I have confidence that I will work as a bartender. My other tip, if you are new to the world of cocktails, start off with the basic class and come back to take the Mixology class; I could have taken Mixolgoy in the afternoon, but I'm glad I didn't overfill my brain while I worked out shaking, straining and the fairly large 200 set of drinks in the starting repertoire. Highly recommend. But remember, you get what you put into it; work hard and take advantage of all the free practice time and you'll learn it all. I've been meaning to write a review on the New York Bartending School ever since I moved to the city two and a half years ago and decided I was gonna pursue bartending as a way of paying some of my bills whilst going back to college. The first thing I did was walk around Manhattan visiting every bartending school that seemed like it was worthy of a visit. Out of the four or so schools I saw NYBTS was, without a doubt, the best. I appreciate the fact that they encouraged me to visit other schools and never once badmouthed a rival school. I still feel that the price tag is too high for what it is - but I took advantage of the unlimited refresher courses and basically took the classes over and over till I felt I had a good grasp of the material. The instructors were very professional and knowledgeable. Coming out of bartending school, I chose to enter the New York bar world as a barback and not a bartender. Whether or not this was the right move to make is still being pondered. I took that route because bartending school does not prepare you to be a real life bartender the moment you graduate and I wanted to work my way up within an establishment - understanding all aspects of the job. Looking back, I would not recommend this. I am grateful for what I learned being a barback at two of New York's busiest restaurants and was earning more than many bartenders, but it's a degrading job and the truth is that most bartenders will not teach their barbacks how to tend bar. Sad...but true. Since I had such little prior knowledge of the trade and all that it can incorporate, I feel that the path I took was the right one. NYBTS gave me a solid foundation in the basics and I learned the rest on the job. There are so many different kinds of bars and bartenders in this city that it really depends on where you are going to work when deciding whether or not the knowledge you'll pick up at NYBTS will benefit you. Looking back, I feel that they prepare their students to be club bartenders more than anything else. That is, pumping out mediocre drinks as fast as possible. This is valuable for certain jobs but has done little for me since I begun to bartend at places that focus more on creating cocktails made with quality ingredients. Also, I still regret not being taught how to use a POS system while at NYBTS. This is a very important part of being a bartender and a vital skill to possess if you're going to convince a bar manager you have experience (but really don't). Be warned also that a bartending job will not be handed to you once you graduate. Be prepared to work hard at it. It should be noted that ladies will have a much easier time than fellas. Also, what some negative reviews say is true: you will most likely have to embellish the truth, if not flat out lie, in order to find a job. Being someone who is honest, this was hard for me. Owners and managers, for the most part, will not want to hire someone who's been to a bartending school. If you are a fast learner and hard worker you'll be able to get your foot in the door at your first job and from there on out it gets much easier. Having worked behind a bar for two and a half years now, I still disagree with people who promote the idea of finding a bartender to teach you how to bartend or going to the bookstore and buying books on bartending. While, those are both excellent ways to learn more, a bartending school plays an important role. Of course, I wish there was a school that was more in-depth and actually prepared it's students to walk from school to the bar and be 100% competent - but that's not the case right now. I'm from upstate ny just retired and always wanted to bartend every one said I had the personality for it. So I looked into classes around my area a lot of money but not much hands on learning. Found the nyc bartending school on line and decided if you want to learn from the best this is the place. This was not a good experience. BUYER BEWARE. It is crucial to make it clear that, IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY PRIOR BARTENDING EXPEIRENCE THIS IS NOT FOR YOU. The free introduction was a lecture nothing involved actually doing anything. The free "lecture" lasted for two hours. At the time I registered, there was an add stating there was a two day course for $300 something...well when I asked the blonde haired lady(think she is the owner), she said there was no such special. BUt funny thing is....if you look to the side of this Yelp ad...it says...free 16 hour bartending $395.00. This is false advertisment. I am flabbergasted by all the positive reviews. I lost $700, on learning absolutely nothing. If you have a bartending background and some expertise, this is for you to enhance your talent. If you have never done anything relating to bartending, don't be stupid like me and lose $700.00. read more

This is a wonderful learning environment! I did the full-days for a week and it was a lot of information, but nothing that we couldn't handle. My instructors were knowledgeable in all aspects of the curriculum and I knew that I was in good hands! I walked in as someone with no experience what-so-ever and am now certain that I can get a job behind the bar and be confident . By the end of the week you know how to not only make the drinks, but also how to get a job. And knowing I can go back for refreshers anytime I need is a HUGE plus. read more
