I've cooked "Indian food" a number of times, mostly various kinds of curries, but until I took Mukti's class I had no real idea of what I was doing or why. She explains things clearly and as she might say, "scientifically," and takes you through the making of several dishes step by step, plus offering tips that were new to me. There were only three of us in the class, so each of us had plenty of opportunities to get our hands full of dough/potatoes/onions, to grind spices, to fry parathas, etc. And then we got to eat it all and chat -- so delicious and relaxing. My friend and I had been excited to try one of Mukti's classes since pre-pandemic. One of the best birthday presents ever was doing the Vegetarian Cooking class with Mukti. I've done over 15 cooking classes in NYC and when we travel and this was by far the best I've been to. The class was an intimate group hosted in Mukti kitchen in Brooklyn. Mukti's background as a scientist brought a different perspective from most of the cooking classes I've been to. She would explain each step from the scientific perspective as well her personal connection to the food and culture. Mukti facilitated a warm atmosphere was very welcoming and every student was able to participate rather than primarily demonstrations. We made several familiar Indian dishes (Chana, eggplant and rice) but everything was the BEST version we have had. We have been inspired to cook with whole spices and love the recipes. Thank you Mukti for such a special evening. We look forward to coming back. I would highly recommend a class with Mukti if you are looking to cook healthy and delicious food. The class size is kept small which is a huge plus especially since Mukti's knowledge of Indian spices and Ayurvedic cooking is just as powerful of an experience as the physical cooking aspect of the class. It's awesome to take a different kind of cooking class in NYC, and be in someone's home! That said, I wish we could've participated more / the class isn't as hands on as I expected it to be. Usually in a cooking class each member is cooking the whole time, but that was not the case for this class. Perhaps there should be less people per class (there were 7 in ours in a small space). Most of us were standing or sitting for a couple of hours, not given the chance to prep food or be a part of the cooking process. It also would've been nice to have the recipes in front of us for reference - I didn't always know what we were making or why. That said if you like to just watch the magic happen this is a good class for you! Personally, I like to be cooking and more involved in the preparation of the food. Mukti's class is the real deal! It has brought me so much joy this past week cooking with and for my family and friends, and I think all of the recipes will be weekly staples (at least until I can take another class!) I'm so grateful to know I can prepare healthy organic and incredible tasting Indian meals at home with time and patience. Mukti was an incredible host who welcomed my boyfriend, myself, and another couple into her home for an amazing three hour experience. She greeted us, told us about her history and how she became a cooking instructor, and then brought us into the kitchen to begin the experience. We booked the vegan and gluten free class, and learned how to make pakora, coriander chutney, aloo gobi matar rasha, chana masala, vegetable pulao, and eggplant masala. Incredibly disappointed with my experience with Mukti's Kitchen. I signed up for an online cooking class in early August, and the weekend before purchased all the ingredients and necessary equipment. Two days before the class, I received an email that the class was cancelled because not enough people signed up. Mukti told me she would be back in touch to reschedule the class. I never heard from her for over a month. When I reached back out to request a refund for the cancelled class, I was informed that there's a no-refund policy and I would need to make the class up. I understand the need for a no-refund policy when students cannot attend a class, but it is unacceptable to not issue refunds when the instructor is the one to cancel. I told Mukti that many of the ingredients I had purchased for the class were perishable, and I was not able to buy the ingredients a second time. She refused multiple requests for a refund. The cancellation policy on her website describes that no refunds are issued if you are unable to take the class, but be aware that it also means that you will not get your money back if Mukti cancels the class! read more

The GF and I really enjoyed this class. It was intimate as there weren't that many students. Mukti has a science background which blends nicely into being able to explain the what and why behind the cooking. Indian food is no longer intimidating. Food was also pretty healthy. We felt good after the meal. Not full in a bad way at all. A truly fabulous, unique and delicious experience. There's nothing wrong with going to a "regular" cooking class (I myself have done it before) -- but there is something special about Mukti's Kitchen. Mukti's warmth is evident the moment you walk into her home -- from the spices you smell, to her family pattering around upstairs, to the tea steeped fresh and handed to you. She moves swiftly around the kitchen, always making sure you are aware of what she has just done, why she's done it, and that you are learning the tools to do ti yourself. There is a real consciousness and thoughtfulness here. No bright red-dyed chicken tikka masala here-- just a lovely right light chestnut color with red onions and beaded with spices. And as much as I ate, I wasn't left with that too-full (gassy) stomach ache that a big plate (or 2) of Indian food can leave you with. Really, go. Mukti's the best. My wife and I took one of Mukti's Indian cooking classes at her home and had a wonderful experience. The class was small, only 6 of us total, so we each had an opportunity to take our turn at the different stations of the cooking process. Mukti not only teaches you how to cook, but teaches you the WHY behind the tastes, and timings. I learned a lot about the origins of the different spices, and why you need to cook things in a certain order. She also let us take home all of the recipes, and information that would help us buy the ingredients we needed to cook these things at home. The best part of course was sitting down to eat together after having cooked all of these delicacies. It was a great family style experience where you got a chance to relax and enjoy each other's company after working in the kitchen for a while. Recently my mother has become obsessed with Indian cuisine: she watched The Lunchbox and 100 Foot Journey and became hooked. After I met Mutkti at an Edible Brooklyn event and she mentioned her personal cooking classes, I knew I would have to bring my mom to Mukti's class. Yesterday we had the pleasure of taking a class with Mukti as a surprise to my mom along with two of my best friends and one of their mothers. The class was informal, informative and fun. So we could pay full attention to her teaching and techniques, she provided a complete hand out with recipes and directions so we wouldn't get distracted trying to write notes and pay attention. Mukti is kind, patience and an excellent cook and hostess. She gave great information and back story about herself and the food she was making. This turned regular cooking class into a personal intimate cooking experience. My mom loved her surprise and we all plan to try out the recipes and techniques right away. Cooking with Mukti is an AMAZING experience! I have always been intimidated by cooking Indian food (it just seemed too complex!). I signed up for Mukti's Spice Tour and she took us around the neighborhood and showed us how to recognize quality ingredients - we then returned to her home to actually cook a delicious meal. Mukti showed us cooking techniques that simplified the process - but my favorite part was her enthusiasm for the science behind the cooking. She didn't just show us what to do - she explained why we doing it. Aside from being knowledgeable, Mukti was extremely inviting (the cooking class takes place in her own kitchen) and fun to be around. Can't wait until her cookbook comes out and hope that I'll be able to return for another class soon! My best friends and I received gift certificates for Mukti's Cooking Class and boy were we blown away by our experience. Mukti holds classes in a variety of places but this one was in her no frills kitchen. It was perfect and so inspiring. It just goes to show that you don't need a commercial grade kitchen to make an incredible meal. Mukti is so warm and inviting. She immediately offered us homemade chai and Indian snacks. She is a passionate chef and careful to make sure that you understand each part of the recipe. She walks you through each step and reviews the recipe at the end. You are hands on in the kitchen - helping to grind the spices (of which she has an encyclopedic knowledge), cut up vegetables, add ingredients, etc. The best part, of course, was sitting together around her table and feasting on the dishes she taught us to make. This experience has ruined dining out for Indian food forever. There is NO current restaurant that can compare with Mukti's dishes. It was just beyond. Awesome time!!!! My boyfriend surprised me with this for Valentine's Day and it was such a treat. First, I love Indian food, but I've always been a little intimidated to cook it. But after learning Mukti's techniques, I think it's something I could really get into. I just need to work on my spice game and then I'm set! Second, the food we made was extremely delicious, I could have kept eating all night. One area of improvement, I think it would be good to have some light snacks upon arrival or some extra appetizers to nosh on while cooking. Your mouth is watering the entire time you're cooking and it was be nice to break your salivating climax with a bite or two. The meal by the end of class is just TOOOOOOOO GOOD. We took a vegetarian class, and I'm a big meat lover, but this veggie based meal could have turned me vegetarian. It was that damn good. Who needs meat when you got flavors like this! My husband is an very capable cook but even he learned a great deal in the class and the food was amazing. Chef Mukti was absolutely fabulous. A charming person and an exceptional cook. Her instructions and demonstrations were clear and very interesting. I learned a lot about the techniques of cooking Indian food. Lots of information and great cooking tips. We all got to both cook and watch (and, of course, eat the exceptionally delicious food we had prepared). We learned how to make about seven different dishes, including 3 vegetable dishes, chicken, bread, mango lassi...as well as masala, which is the basis for almost all of the dishes. Then: samosas; poha rice; mint/coriander chutney, aloor dom; and roti. Awesome! The roti were an experiment in fire and rotation. I throughly enjoyed my time with Mukti and learned SO much about things I thought I already knew. I've had an Indian cooking class at the ICE in manhattan but it was taught by an Indian Guyanese, which makes a difference. Being Guyanese myself, I know how our cooking styles and ingredients are different and Mukti is the real deal. She explains all of the spices, the science behind techniques (I'm also a scientist and was unaware of some of the methods she used which I thought was super fascinating) and importance of using fresh, whole ingredients. She's very attentive, and explains everything step by step. Everyone helps prepare the dishes and you taste as you cook. You experience the aromas and how the parched spices are meant to smell like prior to using them. I've used the same spices in my Indian cooking and there's a distinct difference between how my food tastes and how Mukti's tastes. I'm never going back to my old methods. Her techniques are key for Indian cuisine and if you want to learn authentic Indian food, you need to take this class. She also helped me regain my confidence in making aloo roti after so many failed attempts on my own. Everything was delicious. We had a group of 6 doing the class which I thought was perfect and the class was roughly 3.5 hours if you include eating. It's a great class and I'd happily do it all again! read more
