Its a shame that The Britannia pub seems a bit worn, and in need of some TLC, because it is a perfect setting - down a little side alley which leads onto Richmond Green. Perhaps though, the owners don't want to pour money into it in order to change it into a trendy, fashionable pub, and fair play. It has it's niche. Plenty of regulars keep it ticking over. I have been to a couple of private parties upstairs. This is a large upstairs room, which can be hired out. Once upstairs, you are pretty much left to your own devices. I have not tried the food here, but common consensus is that it is good. Essentially, it is a very friendly, peaceful old boozer in a charming location. If you into comedy clubs, take note; it has a comedy night on a Sunday.

I think any charm that The Britannia has comes from the little paved street that it sits on. It's narrow and pleasantly away from the high street. As a pub itself though it's a little bit lacking. Basically it's little and lacking any really recent upgrades. I think it might have had a lot of the really traditional and original features ripped out at some point and in its place they've installed slightly generic/chain looking alternatives. There can be a bit of charm to the atmosphere on occasions, especially in the winter and in the summer there are outside bits to get a bit sun. There's also a comedy club which runs on Sundays. There have a few of the big promoters so the acts are always of a certain standard.

    Pretty as a picture!

I came here on a Friday lunchtime only really because I'd been before years earlier. It's up one of the quaint side streets that leads from the Green. From the outside it looks like an oldish pub, but inside it is more modern and a firm gastro-type-pub thing. Inside it's small with only a few tables. On my visit they weren't very busy. Beer wise was disappointing-only a couple of ales on. The food menu is expensive-£13.50 I recall for fish and chips. Up the road outside another pub they were advertising beer battered cod and chips at £10.50. To be frank, the food was a tad over what I wanted to pay so ended up having a small salad of tomato, mozzarella and balsamic vinegar (£7.50).It was small but looked very nice and tasted the same. Service was nice-I was asked if I liked the salad and I indeed did. Would I return? For those of you who know Richmond will know that it is literally chock full of great pubs, many a very short walk from this one. The competition is too hot for me to want to return. Perhaps if they got some extra ales on and lowered the prices a tad I might..

Once inside you are in pub heaven with a traditional looking lounge at the front, you almost walk into the bands as you enter the pub but there's plenty of seating to enjoy the music from a safe distance too. You pass through another section before the place opens up to the main bar at the back. It has quite a continental feel to it, and I can't believe I didn't immediately spot the massive vats at the back - I was too busy admiring the statues on the bar. And it's difficult not to be tempted by the selection of beers when in a brewery and I didn't regret my choice of Achtung. They also serve food and while the main menu is limited to sausage rolls and pies you can also order pizza or sushi which is delivered directly to your table by local takeaways. I'll definitely be back, a real gem.

Their Early Doors IPA was always likely to be my favourite, but I also enjoyed Dark Matter, 2 O'clock Ordinary and their Weissbier called Achtung! Good brewery. We stayed long enough to warrant some food. The burgers looked delicious, but we decided to go for 3 snacks for a tenner. This meant we could both have a snack of our choice and also share some chips. I enjoyed the luxury fish fingers! (No Captain Birdseye here!)

We got a table right by the window as we were there quite early in the evening thanks to the jet lag. I got a Fuller's Frontier and the Wild mushroom & spinach gnocchi with sage. My colleague enjoyed the burger. The food was all you'd expect of pub food and more - creamy and rich, thoroughly comforting, with lots of flavor. The space itself feels cozy, despite it being more spacious than most pubs I've visited. It was decorated for Christmas, making it feel even more inviting. Service was attentive enough - took orders but then let us enjoy the evening. It was a team of servers, rather than just one, and all were friendly throughout the experience.

Was then greeted by a waitress who said hello and then a bit further on by the Manager who said hello and asked if she could help me and did I want to eat. That for me is an indication of good service which did indeed follow. A large and imposing Fullers pub set on the banks of the river on the Chiswick side of the Thames. Very traditional inside with carpets and lots of dark wood and traditional chairs etc. Great views over the river and a seating area outside also. A great place to take your parents, grand parents, family, friends etc for a relaxing and no fuss sort of a meal in a traditional London pub. Go for a leisurely stroll along the short towpath and then head back for a pint and some scoff. Good food, good service and everything is shipshape here on the banks of the Thames. Not flash or grand but honest and pleasing. There are three pubs along this stretch and this one is easily the best.

We passed through the gate noted to take us to the river, a by luck, there was the Bulls Head to the left! This is the only way to find this place.
