A genuine Irish pub with a genuine Irish charm!…read more Forget your Irish theme pubs and chains, if you are looking for a good Irish pub this is the real deal. You will get a warm Irish welcome from the moment you walk in. We were there to watch a match. The pub is a great venue for sports, having loads of screens around the bar so you will always be able to see whereever you are and a back room with a giant screen. In particular if you are looking to watch Irish sport, GAA or Munster rugby this is the place to go - for Munster fans this is the new South London base of the Munster Supporters Club. After the match was over we stayed on to enjoy the craic. The pub has a great beer garden and best of all the beer is cheap - two pints for less than £7, an absolute bargain!!! Later in the night there was a fantastic band who had us all up dancing. There was also a man selling oysters and guinness, of which we indulged more than we should have. Overall we had a fantastic night and I can't wait to go back again - highly recommended!

I went to sit down and was given the menu just to find out there was basically nothing on there! Eventually I ordered a burger, but this gargantuan burger could not fit in my mouth?! Our waiter seemed be away with the fairies as he forgot to bring our fourth drink but then continued to charge us with five! However, the bathrooms were decent

A friend and I ventured here last night in the rain for an fairly early supper. We had a 'BOGOF' on…read moremain meals voucher and thought that it would be a fairly cheap option. The pub is split into three main areas - the restaurant at the back (or the front depending on how you look at it) which was deserted. There is the main bar that was 50% full, warm and a bit more lively, and then there is the covered outside part that I suspect smokers hang out in. We sat in the bar, quite naughtily taking up a table for 6 with just the two of us - but then the other options were just too small or too 'in the corner' (I pretended I was Goldilocks). We ordered a bottle of red - the Zinfandel Shiraz, (£20) of which the bar tender gave us a pretty generous tasting amount before we committed. He also brought us a lovely big bottle of tap water and glasses with ice and lemon. Having the voucher in our pockets gave us the courage to go for the rather alarmingly priced roasts - we both chose the lamb at £15. It was superb. It was falling off the bone in a delicious gravy with almost perfect veg, I could have happily had the parsnips roasted for 20 minutes longer (they were less 'al dente' and more 'ouch me dente'). I would have loved more roast potatoes and less aubergine (!) but all in all it was really nice and we ate everything on our plates. Our thoughts then turned to pudding.... well, it would be rude not to at least look, right? It was a dark and rainy night, so bread and butter pudding and custard seemed the only sensible choice. Hmmm, it tasted ok, could have been hotter with less icing sugar dumped on the top (at least there was no aubergine this time) but my real issue with it was that it was tiny. Really really small and measly. (See photo). I mean, when I'm paying £5.50 for what is essentially stale bread and sultanas in custard, I expect a decent portion. It must have cost around 8p to make the slice I had - good mark up if you can get it! The coffee was abysmal. In the usual inverse coffee rule, it smelt so wonderful and then tasted slightly better than dish water. The loos were a frightful state, and when I alerted some woman who was walking around not doing very much, she was pretty defensive about it saying that she had not gone in there since that morning. I think that may be the problem, I said. The chap that seemed to be in charge was good and apologised for the small portion and let the sous chef know, but it was impossible to get the attention of anyone else who seemed to be working there. I gave up trying to get anyone to come over to our table and just walked over to wherever they were if I wanted anything. Even with the voucher, (which they didn't take off the first bill we were presented with) it came to £30 per head, which in retrospect was a lot more than I think the meal was worth. The lamb gets it two stars, but everything else looses the other three stars. Shame, as it looks like it has so much potential.

A recent trip to Forest Hill to meet some old friends for an Irish rugby match brought us to the…read moreBlythe Hill Tavern. I was pleasantly surprised by the place. It looks rather ordinary from the outside and, admittedly, the interior has most likey remained unchanged since its opening. But this is a datedness to revel in. The all-male, all white haired Irish bar staff wear shirts and ties, and seem to take great pride in the racing and other sporting paraphenalia that adorn the dark timber walls. Needless to say, the Guinness was excellent. The clientele was a mix of locals watching a Chelsea match, swapping anecdotes and exchanging stories of married life over pints of ale. A proper boozer, albeit one which holds a CAMRA award. There is also a beer garden.

After checking out the tinterweb she found this place just 15 mins down the road. Along the main road to Catford it's not the most appealing of locations. Approaching I saw the rugged exterior and blacked out windows I hesitated to enter but once I was inside all my anxieties dissapeared in a poof of age ole Irish tradition. More than just an old boozer, this intimate space is just precious. The walls covered in old signs, racing and ale memorabilia. Authentic by definition the Blythe Hill Tavern is the epitome of cork drinking tradition. The pub itself is split into three sections, which sees you have to walk through the actual bar to get in-between them. It's hard to pick out an English accent in this place, including the staff who are all in shirt and tie. That touch of class runs right through the joint with table service for the regular locals and those ordering a Guinness. There are ample places to hang up your coats, which you do instead of stuffing under your table - because it's that sort of place. This truly is a pub with heart and soul, here for the love and not out to rip off thier punters with extortionate prices

But then you wake up the following morning with a pounding head and a resolution to never drink again... Well, my friends and I had one of those nights... and woke up a bit worse for wear on Sunday. However Pedler managed to save us. Pedler Brunch joy: - The boys tried the massive breakfast which included everything (bacon, beans, eggs, little gin sausage, mushroom and amazing maple-butter toast.) It was so huge that Marc lets me try some...I have to admit the maple butter toast was the highlight for me, but the sausage was gorgeous too.) - My friend tried the beans on toast (they looked amaaazing) - I tried duck on rosti with perfect poached eggs. Every single bite was looovely. We were sufficiently full of energy to contemplate heading into central London to finish off our Christmas shopping. So, thank you Pedler!! *Apparently they also have amazing gin cocktails as their sister company is little bird gin...but I couldn't even contemplate alcohol on Sunday morning.

My tip said: "great Cocktails for £6!? We must be in Peckham..." -- and yes, we were…read more Having never ventured down to Peckham previously, we had no idea what to expect. After departing the overground at Peckham Rye and being thrust into an absolutely cacophony of sound, sights and people on Rye Road -- I had no idea where this little Pedler gem might be hiding. Is it in this fish market? What about piled up behind these bushels of yuca? Are those pigs hooves? Chicken heads? Ears of some unknown animal? Honestly, if you want to feel transported to another world, pop off the train at Peckham and go for a nosy. Regardless we finally found our way to Pedlar to meet some dear friends. They'd just had a new baby, we had our toddler in tow and we were all excited to catch up and enjoy a meal together. Until I saw Pedlar and its quaint and tiny little space jammed to the gills on a Sunday afternoon. "Oh no" I thought, we are going to have to go eat somewhere else. There is NO way we are getting in here with these babies without crushing someone, them, or being shamed on to the street by hipsters. (I like hipsters by the way, so this is not meant to be offensive, I probably shamed a parent or too in my youth as well!). But I shan't have worried! We DID have a booking (kudos to our friend) and the day was saved. The buggies did need to be broken down and stored downstairs -- which would have been fine had I not timed this entire operation perfectly down to the minute to have mine sleeping through brunch -- only to be awoken upon the breakdown process. Sigh, so Peppa Pig and the Pedlar, that's how he did his brunch (don't judge me! I needed this!). Anyway, tl:dr the guys were really accommodating despite not being terribly child-friendly, and I really appreciated that immensely. We then took up the beautiful booth with plenty of room for everyone, ordered a round of cocktails (the Bloody Mary and Gin &Tonic were gorgeous ways to start), a smattering of Sunday roasts and pickles and were on our merry way to an absolutely excellent meal. Beef, lamb, puddings, cocktails, more wine, it was all on point and truly enjoyable. The place was stuffed each and every moment we were there, but we were never rushed and thus kept ordering and enjoying and finally once Peppa was no longer able to hold my son's attention we departed full and happy and full of Sunday sweetness. I won't be taking my child back here for my own sake of enjoyment, but I'd love to come back with friends or on a date. It's got a great, cozy vibe with well curated menu and drinks, friendly staff and they are clearly doing many thing right over here. £160 split by 2 couples seemed well priced as well -- where in Central London do you ever get the pleasure of a £6 cocktail? Nowhere, so best travel down here and check it out. *service is not included in the bill, so consider adding some if applicable. *MAKE A BOOKING.
