Gooseberry + Vanilla Cake: I don't see gooseberry very often, so this piqued my interest. Loved how it had a nice fresh tartness, which was a good complement to the sweet and creamy frosting. The cake itself was good too, very fluffy. Jammy Macaroon: Another intriguing offering. I've had many macaroons, but never with jam inside. It made the whole thing a bit unstable, falling part easily, but the moisture and fruit added a nice new dimension. Pain Au Chocolat: Standard, but done quite well. Nice chocolate bits in the center and flaky all around. Vegan Cinnamon Bun: Decent for vegan. The real thing feels moister and fluffier though. Chocolate, Sea Salt & Rye Cookies: A fine cookie. Nice big chocolate veins. Nice cookie dough too.

Cute bakery/cafe located in the Haymarket area of Edinburgh!…read more It was just a few blocks from our hotel and was conveniently open for a quick breakfast before a day of sightseeing throughout the city. They have a selection of coffees and teas, pastries, and small bites available which seem to be baked fresh each morning. Bites include grilled cheese sandwiches, egg roll, granola bowl, bacon rolls, and they also have sausage rolls and sandwich/toasties available for lunch. I ordered the bacon roll and mocha and my husband got the sausage roll and tea. We opted to eat in as they had a few tables inside and no other patrons in the shop and so she quickly prepared our drinks and brought out our rolls which were both toasted nicely. The mocha was ok, not like the heavily chocolated version I'm used to back in the states, but I found this to be the common theme throughout our trip to Europe. The bacon roll was delish! Do note that their bacon is more like a ham around these parts and a bit more salty, but the bread balanced it out quite nicely. If you're really hungry, I'd recommend getting two. I also enjoyed my husband's sausage roll. Overall, it was a great way to start our day and the prices are pretty reasonable. We had ourselves a nice breakfast for less than 20£ and would recommend a stop here.

This ought to be a five-star review…read more Had it not been for a few minor aggravations, it would have been. Let's get those out of the way first: the card machine was broken - not their fault I know, but running up the road in the rain to the nearest cashpoint does sully one's experience a little. There was no sugar on the table to put in my tea, meaning it had to be pilfered from another table. FInally, the girl serving didn't ask me if I wanted ketchup on my bacon roll, leaving me to assume it would be delivered on the side anyway, which it wasn't... But those are minor aggravations. Mini mini mini qualms. Overall, PJ is quite simply L.O.V.E.L.Y. Big and fresh and high-ceilinged, with a good line in yummy-looking cakes (including some simply adorable mini macarons) and a fine Chesterfield sofa, this is my kinda place for real. I don't get out to this end of town all that much but this is definitely a beacon to draw me back. (Although it looks like they're opening a branch on South Bridge, so, y'know. It depends where the sofa ends up. I'm fickle.) My bacon sandwich came on proper wholemeal bread, just like you'd hope, in a roll bigger than my palm. Ok, ok, tiny mandolin hands render that comparison useless. Let's say about the size of a saucer. A happy size. A truly filling size. Sure, without the ketchup it was a little drier than ideal but not so much that I bothered to actually ASK for ketchup. Add to that that my pot of tea was good and generous and cost me less than two quid, and I was properly set for a darn tootin' good day. Thanks, Pat Jacob. Looking forward to having you in Old Town!

Tasty latte and they sell fentimans curiosity cola which is a real treat. I ordered a carrot cupcake with a chamomile tea. I sat at one of the tables and dug into my food as soon as it all arrived! The little cupcake was sweet, moist and very delicious. The chamomile tea was piping hot and exactly what I wanted. I sat at the side of the table that faces the street and got to just relax for a while whilst enjoying my food. From what I remember their menu mostly consists of the cupcakes and hot beverages! However, if that's exactly what you want then you'll be good to go. I intend on returning to give more of those delicious cupcakes a try :) Make sure not to arrive too late if you want to be able to pick from any of the flavors offered on a particular day! But I'd definitely recommend it to anyone interested in giving Cuckoo's Bakery a try.

The staff were lovely, putting up with my umm-ing and inane chatter. I may or may not have had a discussion with one of them about the aforementioned Doctor Who and our thoughts on the season opener. I settled on two different sticky confections (one toffee, one chocolate/caramel) and two identical lemon & raspberry meringue cakes - because I know that's a flavour Tim and I wouldn't reach a compromise on sharing. The sticky chocolatey ones were indeed sticky & chocolatey with a nice moist sponge, but those lemon & raspberry meringue cakes were possibly the nicest I've had. A proper light sponge, plenty of lemon flavour and the soft meringue topping is sweet without being sickly like buttercream can be. A true superstar of a cake from a lovely store. I'll definitely be popping back here - probably on foot rather than traveling by TARDIS though, mores the pity!
