Old Forester's Paristown Hall is my favorite place to catch a show in the city right now…read more Established only recently in 2019, I love how much the name (even with a brand sponsorship in it) sounds like an Established 1819 sort of place. It's a modern take on the standing-room-only "Big Rock Show" venue, with well stocked bars on either side of the stage and a cool balcony above (often reserved for VIP standing or sitting, and with its own bar and bathrooms). One of the twists to the venue that is in my understanding still greatly under appreciated is that the Louisville Orchestra collaborated in building Paristown Hall. The stage can fit the whole orchestra, the acoustics are good enough to showcase that, and the A/V system is deep enough capture most of it. How many orchestras in this country have a venue that they can regularly play that gives off "Big Rock Show" energy? Paristown Hall is also the reason that Louisville had one of the few active, working orchestras (and paid salaries to them!) in the country in the early 2020s. (Those live streams meant a lot to me as a fan of live music in those years.) I try to buy any Paristown Hall ticket that sounds even of passing interest. I especially buy a ticket for every Louisville Orchestra show at Paristown Hall before even reading the description, because any show our Orchestra thinks needs to be at Paristown Hall is a show I don't want to miss. (Absolutely my recommendation to everyone: if the Louisville Orchestra is playing at Paristown Hall it will be a treat and you should buy tickets.)

We had some extra time to kill before a tour we purchased tickets for and walked around the area. I didn't realize this place was so close. I walked in not knowing what to expect and had no specific plans. I guess I was hoping to go on a tour but there were no more tours that fit into our itinerary. We walked around for a couple of minutes to kill. Since there was a lot to see block after block in this area, we decided not spend too much time here. It was cool to stop in just to check it out and possibly plan a tour for next time we are in town. There was merchandise and bottles available to purchase but we withheld due to not sampling any of the bourbons. We were not approached by any staff offering assistance, which was fine since we did not require any but maybe a hello would have been cool.

It's always such a great time! There are food trucks, vendors, and live music. Plus, it's right on the water so it's such a great setting! The concerts showcase local and emerging national recording artists, so it really gives attendees a chance to check out new and upcoming music. There are always tons of people there, and there's always a very chill and loving vibe, which is super nice to feel from our city. These events are family friendly, but you'll have to leave your pets and alcohol at home, though there is usually a cash bar. I wish we could bring our puppy to this event, but I understand the restrictions. If you're looking for a really great free and fun event to take in during the summer, WFPK Waterfront Wednesday is one of Louisville's best!

We were in Louisville the last week of July last year, so we went to the concert on Wednesday July 26, 2023. The lineup for that day were artists I hadn't heard of -- Supreme Beings of Leisure, Jameron, and Bettye LaVette, as well as Steven Page of Barenaked Ladies. The Barenaked Ladies are a popular Canadian band that I don't care for, however, it was a free concert, so we went. To my surprise, Craig Northey, lead singer of Odds, a Canadian band that was popular during the 90s, came on stage and along with Steven Page, sang "Someone Who's Cool", one of the Odds' biggest hits. It was surreal being in Louisville, Kentucky of all places, watching Craig Northey and Steven Page perform a popular 90s Canadian song. Even though the Louisville Slugger name and company is now owned by Wilson Sporting Goods, H&B still owns and operates the factory and museum next door. They just can't use the name for this distillery. My wife and I were in Louisville visiting, and I had prebought a combo ticket (Louisville Slugger tour and Big Bat Bourbon tasting) for $50 each adult on their website (normal cost is $35 for the tasting so saved a little money). The first tasting was at 11 am, which is when it opened (so the request to come 10 minutes early doesn't really make sense). If I had to do it over (and had more time), I would have scheduled it for after lunch. The business consists of a bar and a back room which was set-up for tasting. A bourbon mixing kit had been laid out in front of us. There was only one other group besides us, so had plenty of space. The session was led by a certified bourbon professional. We first started by ranking each of the six whiskeys by sampling them straight. This allowed us to know what our preferences were. There was also a simple website accessible from your phone, that would ask you some questions, and then suggest a combination to begin with, which is what we did. The idea was to take different amounts of 6 different types of bourbon, mix it together, to produce your own custom blend that you liked. Water was provided to rinse both our mouths and the little spoons). We had time to try six different combinations (the guide did confirm that she could not refill any of the shot glasses if we used one up). That being said, I didn't come close to using any of them up. The remaining whiskeys were all mixed together to see what it tasted like. If you liked a mix well enough, you could order that custom blend in your own customized 750ml bottle, watching it being made. My wife liked her concoction so we ordered a bottle ($55) for her. I really liked the idea of mixing your own bourbon as a party game, so bought the take home kit for $74.95, to be used later. Both were paid at the gift shop, then the custom bourbon is put in a single queue for 'manufacturing'. It was neat seeing it being made, and my wife now has a nice (drinkable) souvenir for our visit. The experience took about 90 minutes and it was a lot of fun.

The food is good but nothing to rave home about. I got the French dip and my boyfriend got the burger sliders. Both were good size portions and we were satisfied with the food. What the Scene is doing right is offering quick service in a nice atmosphere before shows. You order at the bar and the food comes to your table pretty quickly. I think we waited around 10 minutes for it. The only real complaint is the table situation. We ordered around 6:45 for a 7:30 show and there were no open tables. Many people linger and drink after eating taking up table space. Luckily Another couple offered to share their table with us. All all I will probably go back before another show but there's so many other places in Lou to choose from.
