Our in laws suggested this restaurant as it's the only white table cloth kind of joint in the area. They made a reservation at 5pm on a Friday. Doors opened promptly at 5pm. They have a few happy hours. Senior meal is 5pm-5:30pm and happy hour for their martinis is 5pm to 6pm where all martinis are half off. Typically they are $14 so it's a good happy hour. My in laws were able to get 3 in before happy hour was over. They deliver warm bread and provide a plate of cheese and oil to dip. For an appetizer we got the fried ravioli and it came with about 6 ravioli in a pesto sauce and with a drizzle of balsamic and chopped tomatoes on top. For dinner I opted for the Walleye. They give you a large fillet and it came with mashed potatoes and the seasonal vegetables which happened to be butternut squash and zucchini. The whole meal was delicious. They even treated my husband and father in law to a slice of cheesecake to celebrate their birthday. The food is very good. I sure wish that they would add some items or change it some though. I was not happy about ordering a Cosmo that the menu said would be made with Kettle One, but they made it with the cheaper Stoli instead. Deceiving your customers is never a good idea. Not fair at all for customers not seated at the bar and unable to see what vodka gets poured. This wasn't an accident. They were playing the same games with the vodkas last summer. read more

My family and I came to this restaurant for my birthday, looking forward to celebrating with a nice meal. The food was great! But the service was disappointing. I don't drink alcohol and asked about N/A options, like if they have or are able to make any mocktails. They have all sorts of specialty martinis with a variety of juices and ingredients, so that didn't seem like a crazy request. I have no problem paying $14 for what's essentially a fancy juice in order to feel included on my birthday. It felt like the server practically scoffed when I asked, and was not very helpful with naming other options. Most of us just ended up sticking with waters. I did end up trying a lemonade later on, but it didn't have a lot of flavor to it. We were all very full from the two appetizers and our meals, but I still wanted to at least try one of the desserts since it was my birthday dinner. My family offered to help me eat it, so I asked if we could have extra plates to share it. Again, the server's expression felt kind of judgmental. But it was likely the worst one in the dining room, right by the door where everyone walks through together to their table and servers getting fresh glasses to reset tables and very noisy. I've been going to the Boulders for about 20 years, and have always enjoyed the food and service. I will say, I wish they would do some specials because the menu has remained the same as long as I've been going. One of my favorites, as well as the friends I bring every year has always been the crab crusted grouper. I understand they recently changed ownership and from what I understood they weren't going to change anything. Unfortunately, they changed the crab crusted grouper to crab crusted tilapia. I, personally, wouldn't order tilapia as it's considered a bottom feeder. Was disappointed to see this change as many of my friends were too! read more

This is the one premium fancy restaurant in the area, and it hits every note perfect. This is fishing country, and seafood is the specialty here. They aren't open much, and reservations are by calling them on the telephone, which you should do well ahead of time. I got in on two days notice but that was before fishing opener. I had walleye, and it was soft and the breading was crisp. One of the options for sides was "red smashed potato," which sounds like a chunky potato with the skin still there to me, but it was actually a smooth, creamy mash that worked perfectly. I had a Bud, which is the most normal beer ever but they put it in a fancy glass anyways. That was a fun touch. read more

After we spent the day biking and roaming around the town of Walker, we decided to grab a bite to eat. A quick search on Yelp, and we settled on The Boulders. We did not have a reservation, nor were we quite dressed for the place (which raised quite a few eyebrows, but who cares!) Place was very busy and was packed wall to wall. Hostess, while being snotty and rolling her eyes, was able to accommodate us even without a reservation. Wait staff was super friendly and had good recommendations from the beer list. I steered clear of the martinis as we had a 2 hour drive home. Welp, maybe next time..:( Menu was very diverse and not what we expected for middle of nowhere, Minnesota. I opted for the Penne Jambalaya and the missus chose the Paella. We each ordered the french onion soup as our side. Dinner rolls arrived very quickly and were obviously very fresh. Hard on the outside but very soft and fresh on the inside. French onion soup was very good. The paella was cooked in a tajine and was a lot of food. Very tasty. The Penne jambalaya was about par for the course. Plenty of leftovers between both dishes. The only downside was the utilization of the space here. It got very noisy at times and all we could hear was every word from other tables. Yeah, no one wants to hear about your Ancestry.com DNA results old guy looking for his long-lost family members! I visited the Boulders again after last eating their and writing a review in August of 2015. Sadly, I found that the quality of the food has slipped quite a bit. Visited this year to celebrate my mother's birthday, and she wanted to come here to celebrate, and have the walleye as well. To their credit, I called ahead to reserve a quiet place to sit for my aging parents, and to see if they had any special birthday treats for my mom. Spoke with Nancy, who arrange for the perfect place to sit and birthday desert. We went at 5pm to take advantage of the Senior pricing (5-5:30pm), where meals are discounted and more affordable. We had a great server (Amanda) who was efficient and friendly. They still serve their soft rolls with a shallow tray of olive oil and their delicious cheese/herb mix. Yum! The summer salad was pretty good, but not as good as I remember from last time. A bit too much dressing, less flavorful. We all ordered the walleye, and were all disappointed. Each meal arrived with walleye that was very heavily breaded and greasy. The inside was dry. The last time we visited, the fish was very lightly breaded and seemed pan fried - much more delicate. I had the seasonal veggies - almost all summer squash/zucchini, and bland, over cooked. We were all really disappointed - we were so looking forward to the amazing walleye we had last time. And at $16.75 a meal for the fish, even more of a disappointment, especially for my parents in their 80's with a limited income. Amanda brought out a large bowl of ice cream with a candle for my mom's birthday, which was sweet. Service continues to be efficient, and the restaurant is really lovely. The noise level can get quite high, especially with large parties. The bathroom is easily accessible and clean. Parking is out back. My wife and I heard many good things about The Boulders so we thought we would check it out while we were in the area. It has a very nice dining area albeit a bit noisy. Anyhow I ordered the hog heaven (pork chop) while my wife ordered the jambalaya. My pork chop was served with pasta Alfredo. My cut of meat was very nice and it had a sauce that went with it. I found the sauce a bit too sweet although my wife tried it and liked it. Now to the jambalaya. Having experienced real jambalaya in the south this was a disappointment. The Boulders made this dish with penne pasta instead of rice. Really?? A big no-no. Overall the dish was definitely lacking. On the plus side, service was very good and their selection of "adult" beverages was really good as well. The martinis- They have a flush cocktail menu with all kinds of martinis. I don't know how they do it but I've never had one as strong as they do here. Please designate your younger sibling, cousin, or someone older to drive as they pack a punch. Have one, you get a nice buzz, two you will start slurring words and feel strangely euphoric after your meal, three and you'll be dancing on your dock naked in the moonlight by midnight. Not a bad option in the summer but watch out for mosquitoes or rampant geese. The Boulder's Summer Salad- A fresh slap in the taste buds for a salad. Makes you wish you could spend all summer sitting on the dock picking at a salad while listening to Grandma tell you life lessons and stories of lake love. French Onion Soup- Hard to make a terrible FOS but also hard to make a perfect one. This is the latter, it's got the right balance, the perfect crouton to cheese to onion balance, and is great for dipping. If you get the cup and not the bowl tell others around you it's too hot and bat away their searching fingers with your spoon. Hogs Heaven- The best pork I've ever had, what even is that glaze? Perfect level of salt, sealed in and juicy, not dry in the slightest. It also comes with veggies and the fettuccine with homemade white sauce. At first, I wasn't sure if it was a complete thought but after slicing a think piece of pork and eating with the fettuccine it really did come together nicely. Smooth, rich, and the creaminess really balanced well with the salty and glazed pork. Best dish I've had at Boulders. You honestly cannot go wrong with the entrees, they all are delicious in their own way and all the fish and seafood is very fresh. Quite a legend of a place tucked away in the northern outskirts of Minnesota. Like the mythical and enigmatic loon, Boulders is a rare breed of restaurant that has many secrets to unveil. read more

My husband and I went there to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary last night and it was the worst experience we've ever had. Our waitress was Lori B and she was unfriendly, short with us and threw away the food I asked to be boxed up. When she first arrived at our table, she just stood there and said nothing, like she was upset we were there. It was surprising and very awkward, especially from a restaurant of this caliber. We we're so polite and patient with her but it completely ruined our Anniversary. I don't recommend this place for anyone. read more

Our annual trip to Bolders while spending a week fishing Leech Lake. Our dinners were wonderful, I had the special tonight shrimp & scallops in a delicious sauce over linguine . My husband cannot miss his absolute favorite Paella. We started with the crab & artichoke dip accompanying our cocktails. We ended the meal sharing a piece of carrot cake. My husband and I had a road trip day that landed us in Walker for dinner. He found this place and it was a great find. Just on the outside of town we arrived around 8:15 and they were serving until 9. We were seated right away and the place was still busy. As many other reviews have said it was very loud in there which made it hard for a conversation. The table we had was right in the middle in a weird spot but that was the only downfall. The food was outstanding. I asked the waitress what she recommended and it was the grouper with crab. It had a nice flaky texture and mild flavor not fishy. It came with potatoes and veggies all fantastic. My husband had the lamb shank special. The lamb literally fell off the bone. It was so well cooked and the wild rice was also delicious. He had the beer cheese soup and it was the best I have had. They also give you bread and do a Parmesan olive oil dipping sauce with it. Nice dinner for the end of our trip. read more

Great upscale find, especially for a small town. The service was great, the drinks were unique and tasty. Their soup was delicious and they have a dishes ranging from $14-$50 so it most anyone's tastes. The ambience was very fitting for the town. A big log cabin style room. It had a very open feel with a warm wood ambience with huge open windows so you can see the outdoors. There was also nice holiday decor to fit the season. Had dinner here, last Tuesday to celebrate my birthday. EXCELLENT! I had the Walleye and my husband had the Chicken Fettuccini. It was the Early Bird special so added a martini at the early bird price. All was excellent. Food was delicious. (I go to restaurants all over the world so very picky). We went to dinner last night at The Boulders, and it was really great. It's been a while since I, a chronic Yelp taker, have written a review, but this restaurant looked like it deserved one, with only 2 in the bank and none very recent. Four stars rather than five only for the somewhat odd arugula salad starter. It had cheese, tomatoes, and dried fruit, all great on their own but a little overwrought together. My group split two of these, a shame as I bet the other starters would have impressed a little more. Because the mains were fabulous. I had cornmeal(?)-crusted walleye, with the wild rice medley as the "potato" side, and it was just wonderful. Think: a delicate, sensible take on fish & chips without the malt vinegar. It didn't need it! I found only two tiny bones in a very sensible if slightly too ample portion. Awesome. My companions had grouper and seafood paella, both also great choices. The restaurant has a decent sized bar, which is where we ate, along with a large single dining room in the same space. It got a little noisy, but nothing beyond the pale. I'd definitely go there again. read more
