Beautiful indoor bouldering gym in the middle of Sacramento. Parking: free with plenty of spaces in the complex. The facility is easy to find with large signs on the building and entrance. Restroom: generally clean, with 3 stalls per gender and locker rooms available. Soap was not refilled in one of the restrooms during my visit. I've climbed at many gyms before, but this location stood out because of a very strong odor upon entering. It was much stronger than the typical "climbing gym smell." The receptionist mentioned it was likely from climbing shoes. The gym may benefit from improved ventilation and deeper sanitization/drying of rental shoes. Plenty of activity areas: kids climbing section, routes with various difficulty levels, grip exercise area, weightlifting area, cardio area, one ping pong table, bar area, and open seating/storage spaces for belongings while climbing. The routes are color-coded by difficulty: green is the easiest, followed by blue, up to black for the hardest routes. Some gray holds appear to function as safety/additional assistance holds that can be used if needed. They also host college nights with student discounts. Members can bring one guest for free, and rental shoes are $5. Else adult day pass is $30. Overall, a good bouldering gym with lots of amenities and climbing options, though ventilation and shoe sanitation could be improved. read more

Our group visited this location as part of a team building event. Check in was a breeze. You have to sign a waiver and they need to double check your ID but after that you are good to go. Staff was helpful and friendly. This place? Wow big open and nice airy location. Lots of space and chairs. Our group had a nice location set up for the event and multiple staff members to help out the littles. This place also has a cafe and some beers on tap which is just another awesome addition. Bathrooms were clean and they also had locker rooms. Add to the equipment they had around and this is really great place for workout or exercising. One final thing is that they allow outside food, so for events you just pay for that and all the food and drinks are up to you. Quite an awesome place for a group team building event! read more

Good experience, but not great. Took my 6 year old daughter here to check it out randomly one day and found the facilities to be really well done. They do have a kid's area but ut it was too small for us so we headed around to explore. Tried quite a few different areas and everything was fine just didn't really know how to go about it all. It wasn't until at one point my daughter jumped off a handhold that was about 10 feet off the ground and scared herself that I thought to myself "holy crap, what would I do if she actually fell from the top?". I didn't really have any clue and fortunately that did not happen. I suppose if you are really serious about bouldering then this is the place to be. For us, it was a good place to spend an hour on a day with nothing better to do. I think it would be good for our kid to attend a camp next time or maybe ask for more safety instructions before going for it. Overall, not bad, but a bit scary at times. I've been here several times over the years (since 2021 I believe) and each time I've just gotten the guest pass since I never lived around the area to actually justify getting a pass. I like rock climbing a lot and this place is great for those who are just starting out. The facility is clean and bright. The staff are always kind and helpful and I love that there's a little cafe inside if you need anything from a granola bar to a hard cider LOL. I wish they had rope climbing available but I can see how the facility is not built for that type of activity (would be really great addition though!). I also love that they have a little area for stretching, cardio, and weight lifting, and not to mention yoga classes as well. having those additional amenities apart from just rock climbing can make it worth for the monthly membership. Since I've been going here for several years now, you can really tell that the prices have increased as well. Rock climbing is not a cheap sport. Therefore, if you're planning to check this place out and just get a day pass, be ready to spend at least $45-50 on rental shoes, a bag of chalk, and a day pass. If you're a student, military, and/or government worker there is a small discount available so bring your ID with you as proof to avail of the discounted pricing. They're quite strict on students as well, and would require you to log into your student portal to check if you're actually enrolled in classes. read more

Price is way out and employee is a snob. I brought my 2 kids in to touch the wall for 1 hour and it was $30/toddler to step on the mat. Employee was not knowledgeable and imposing. I used to have a membership here when i was single and without kids but since The Boulder Fields had become something I'd rather my family or any friend not interact with. read more

I've been a member at The Boulder Field for years now, and this place is seriously top-tier. The boulders are always great, and the staff? Some of the friendliest, most helpful people you'll find. Whether you're new to climbing or have been at it for years, this gym has something for everyone. Oh, and the café? Super rad. They've got all kinds of specialty drinks and beer--perfect for hanging out after a session. BUT--if you bring your kids, PLEASE watch them. This isn't a playground. Bouldering comes with risks, and little ones running around can make it unsafe for everyone. Just keep an eye on them so we can all climb and have a good time! Nice fun place to go when it's raining outside! My boyfriend and I spent about 3 hours here and had lots of fun climbing and then we ended our day doing our gym routine at the boulder field, so it was convenient that they gave us that option. The only thing I wished they gave with rentals are the chalk bags; we have been to boulder places where they rent out chalk bags for free as well. Only been here once. For my family of 7, an all-day pass was an estimate $180. All the employees were helpful, the kids area offers a wide wall of differing challenges that even my 3-year-old can try. Our older kids got tired quickly, but my younger kids kept persevering and my husband enjoyed being a monkey on the wall. It was pretty much a big playground. They went to Granite Arch later on, and although they enjoyed belaying more than bouldering, they liked that the Boulder Field had more varieties of climbing shoes. read more

Spectacular place for climbing! My friend was nice enough to use a free guest pass for me and I'm so happy he did. This place is incredible. The Boulder Field boasts an expansive gym with various walls that are unique and often change. There's various difficulty levels too. The amount of variety they offer makes it interesting! I'm infatuated with this bouldering establishment. I enjoy the layout of the rock walls. This place is also equip with cardio machines, weights, exercise balls, stability balls, yoga class, and even a sauna. All the necessity for a gym. After all the sweats and great workouts head over to their bar area where they have a nice selections of refreshing komuchas on tap. The Boulder Field is a solid climbing gym, if you are looking to level up your climbing game, or just have fun. I used to climb at Touchstone/Pipeworks, but after their racist and classist shenanigans, I wanted to switch to the Boulder Field. The Boulder Field has hard and technical sets, but they really train you for climbing outdoors and pushing your limits. Pipeworks has quite bro-y setters, and that showed in the movement and limited style of climbing there. The Boulder Field operates on a color scale, rather than strict V-grades, which I am still on the fence about. I like being able to track progress and having the scale makes it a little difficult. If you get tired of their sets, they also have a moonboard, a tension board, and spray wall. For climbing training, they have hangboards and campus boards galore. There's also free weights and some cardio machines. I've only climbed here during COVID. They've been quite good with enforcing masks and keeping climbers safe with reserved time slots and lots of cleaning and hand sanitizer everywhere. Looking forward to things going back to something resembling normal to utilize all the space for working and climbing at the same time. read more

When my boyfriend and I heard that The Boulder Field was opening and has since opened, we were excited to try it out. We finally got around to climbing at TBF yesterday afternoon! TBF is located in an industrial, warehouse-y area. We were grateful for the foldout sign placed near the parking lot entrance, which made it easy to spot the building as we were getting nearer. There were plenty of parking spots available when we arrived. Upon walking into the building, my first impression was that the inside was huuge. It's all so open and clean, with walls for days, and in peak August heat, wonderfully air-conditioned. There were three tablets set up to the left of the entrance, so we started filling out the standard waiver. Shortly after, we were greeted by the staff at the front desk, who told us they'd be starting the orientation video on the TV above us. Despite being someone who has climbed before and is familiar with the risks involved with bouldering, I appreciated watching the orientation video. It was about five minutes long, and covered the basics of how bouldering involves more risks (than top roping), how to fall safely to minimize injury, and how to distinguish their color grading system. I can definitely see how this video would be helpful to first time climbers and those who are new to TBF. The day pass was $20 for each of us, and we didn't need any rental shoes since we brought our own, but for reference, rentals are $5. There are soo many different routes, with a wide range of skills and technique that challenge all levels of climbers. The color system makes it so that you can try out more routes without the label of the traditional V0-V10+ labels. Each route does top out, which was a little intimidating to me at first, but as the orientation video emphasizes, only climb as high as you are comfortable. The facility is amazing. There are so many walls to climb, plenty of cushioned benches to sit on, lots tables and chairs to take a break or enjoy a drink from the bar, an adorable kids area (with a slide!!), and super clean restroom/locker/shower areas. I'm so excited to see the climbing community in Sacramento continue to grow. The Boulder Field is definitely a place I will be visiting again, and a place that I recommend to anyone who already loves or is interested in trying bouldering. First time here yeasterday. We had so much fun. My first impression is wow this place is huge.. great for beginners like us.. it's not too high it's 14ft high. Would love to do it and again and we will be back here for more for sure.. great for practice. They have a little gym where u can do cardio or lift weights which is pretty cool and they have a sauna also. I had some latte coffee with almond milk at the bar it was not bad. It's ok taste.. don't think worth the money for me. Kambutcha was good we get to tried those.. All in all my ratings is 5 solid. We had fun and will do it again we need to practice our upper strength body which is this place is great for it..great for beginners and intermediate level. This a big gym. It has a coffee bar that has beers on tap, too, so a good before and after place. The cardio equipment is good, 3-4 treadmills and elliptical and at least eternally-climbing-the-stairs-machine. The walls are expertly set and often change. The bathroom facilities are roomy and clean. The location in Sacramento is on the outskirts of town in a light industrial area but there are a few fast food places within a short driving distance. Temperatures inside were good when we've been on hot days and cold days, seems to be well regulated. This is a great place! read more

I had to pay to stop them from selling my own property. I typically love going to this gym and have been for years but I was really disappointed to see my water bottle (that i had assumed had been stolen but was apparently in the lost and found) for sale and then be told I had to pay a finders fee if I wanted it back. I don't think a place should be selling It's lost and found items and at the very least I believe they should have let their members know that if they think for any reason, they might've lost some thing to check at the front desk because they were going to sell everything if it wasn't claimed. And then if someone does find their own property for sale at your business you should at least be decent enough to give it back without making them pay you a 'finders fee'. This experience was off putting and and I ended up leaving after a few minutes without even climbing because the situation had made me uncomfortable. read more

Very spacious bouldering gym. Using color grading instead of numbers, the harder problems are pretty tricky and challenging. They have a lot of space to store your bags and other belongings. A lot of sitting and resting areas. Staffs are very friendly and attentive. They also have a bar area where you can order drinks from. The whole facility is very clean. The Boulder Field is literally the BEST place here in Sacramento for people that like to only boulder like myself! I stopped by here last week to check out the place and was shown around by Mary; her and the staff were so nice and very knowledgable about the questions and concerns I had for them. What is awesome about this place that I saw is they have lots of space for your personal belongings; awesome seating so you're not sitting on the padding in an awkward seated position; and best of all the bar that has coffee, kombucha, and beer! They also have a training area to get your wrist stronger, free weights, and yoga if you're interested on doing something other than climbing. One thing that stood at to me as an avid climber was the grading system. Unlike the regular bouldering rating system, they have their own unique system by color so you aren't worried about what you level your climbing, which helps push yourself to the limit! Lastly another great thing about this place it is much cheaper than other competitors, which obviously is nice for someone that doesn't want to worry about price but just wants to climb. read more

We did a semester with our kids and we did waivers in order to enter when the kids are in the two hour class but they had an issue and my wife did multiple time waivers but one time she said that's enough every time I come I do waiver and they left her out and they didn't let her in one of their employee recognized her. Try to let her in and then they kick her out. This is unacceptable. If you have an issue with your computers, we should not take any kind of responsibility for it. As always, 5/5 for the experience here! The staff are always super friendly and helpful. During covid, you are required to reserve your time slot ahead of time. Non-members can reserve their slots as early as 12 hours ahead of the time they anticipate to go. $20 for adults and $15 for students. You can sign your waiver online, reserve your spot, then pay shortly after online. Then show up, show your ID and you're good to go! If you don't have your own shoes, it's $5 to rent. They require liquid chalk during covid, and they sell small bottles if you need! No fresh coffee or beer on tap at this time. They still have their gym equipment out for you to use and plenty of sanitizer. Even though it can get a bit busy, it's mostly members, and there's plenty of space to social distance. Also a bonus, if you have friends or family members who want to watch but not climb, they still have to sign a waiver, but they don't need to pay to come in. I really appreciate that! read more

I almost don't want to write a review about this relatively new bouldering gym because of how amazing this gym is. Routes: Nice range of difficulty for everyone and everything is spaced out ensuring climbers of all levels different problems to work on, and pretty much no wait time. The walls are pretty tall but there is a gigantic padding to break your fall. By far the softest ones I've had the pleasure of falling on. They also change the routes every 6 weeks or so, allowing time to finish a problem and also give regulars more routes to work with. Space: IT IS HUGE. They also have a separate gym area with weights, treadmills, squat racks, and also a mini climbing gym. It's cool because apparently there's an app where you can put in which holds you want to work on and the wall of rocks light up a path that helps you get stronger! They also have nice clean restrooms, a SAUNA, and also a shower! Also they also have a coffee shop, and nice beer on tap! While you're climbing you can put your belongings in the cubbies provided or the lockers in the restroom! Staff: they have an amazing staff. We've met Sara the many times we've stopped by who's super nice and welcoming. The other employees are also really helpful and help you with the routes as well. Makes it less intimidating to come in. My boyfriend met Clyde? Who's really helpful and super nice! Membership: we got a membership for 180 (for about 3 months) which is an amazing deal considering there was no initiation fee and it's part of their summer deal. I think the daily pass isn't bad either and the shoe rental is only 5 dollars a day! All in all super cool gym! You get to meet amazing Climbers from all over, some professional ones as well. The Boulder Field and Pipeworks are the two places I'll go rock climbing in Sac. Space-huge bc of the warehouse, spacious with the open layout and clean. During the day, plenty of lighting, good AC and tables + cubbies in all the right places. Safety-thicc padding. Layout-one of the few areas in Sac that is dedicated to bouldering and the routes don't feel too crowded, easy to distinguish or have a million pieces of old tape going in every direction. Other than bouldering-their gym section is small, but unlike other spaces, TBF makes its own dedicated gym space, not just a bunch of old equipment thrown in a corner or forced into the business so if you wanted to mess with free weights, pull-ups or a dedicated gym floor then you'll have just enough space to do so. Crowds-Maybe I'm going at the right times, but what crowds? Otherwise, they have cool weekly events. Price-Student rate with no rentals or extras-paid 15$. They have a coffee bar area where you can grab a drink-never checked the prices so can't say much Kids-eh, truly dedicated kids section isn't much, but I'm sure your kids would have a blast, more than I've seen elsewhere Parking-big lot, clean and not surrounded by homeless This place is a no brainer-if not here, then go to Pipeworks read more

Great staff! Such a great supportive and welcoming community. However, with the fans being on as much as they are and no heaters, the gym is too cold. I can't seem to ever get warm, and I have found myself not coming to the gym nearly as often because of it. I wonder if this could be made somewhat better by not having the fans on as high. I really do love this place, but with how cold it is in the winter, I don't enjoy my time in the gym. The sauna is a god send and the facilities are cleaner than other gyms. read more
