Her chocolate parfait was perfect. Our main meals were from the Specials Board which meant that the ingredients were fresh, local and good. The portion of salmon was generous to say the least and the local Cotswold pheasant breasts were beautifully succulent which is a sign of care in preparation. We have visited before and found the service and food disappointing. (You may have read my review which I have replaced with this one.) This time the staff were attentive and listened to my mother's request to have her vegetables cooked to her liking. Well done to the Mason's Arms.

It was fairly busy but quite quiet. There are several areas in the pub, one of which had a TV. We sat at a table near the pool table. The staff could not have been more courteous or friendly and the food was excellent. I used to drink here over 15 years ago and it has recently changed hands. Money has been spent on a complete makeover and the new landlords are re-building the business. Foods good, and so's ther beer - good company - if you like Hospital Consultants, Doctors and the locals. Covered and heated smoking area for us lepers. Only problem is finding somewhere to park at peak times. But it really is worth the effort.

We arrived to a freezing cold pub to find our table wasn't set. An hour after arrival, having gone to the bar for drinks because we weren't allocated a waiter, the second course was plonked on our table. It was a sliver of smoked salmon and an overdone egg. Eventually cutlery arrived. The main course - a school dinner style plate with no garnishes arrived eventually followed by a tablespoon or so of pudding. The fifth course never arrived. The waiter refused to speak to us and so of course coffees were not even a possibility. One table got up and left and the young couple next to us were absolutely distraught at the cost for what this turned out to be. I have requested a partial refund as they obviously didn't deliver what was advertised and have been refused. I had heard that this place had gone badly down hill - and our last visit before Christmas rang some alarm bells - but to have provided such an appalling service on Christmas should fill the owners with shame. It seems it hasn't. Please avoid.

Our room was very nice and comfortable, in the old converted stables. Overall, the food was great, the only two disappointments being no fried bread at breakfast, which we were told they had some time ago stopped serving, a small but definite negative, and the burger was just ok, a bit dry and bland. They had excellent cask ales, including a local one. Service was very good but mixed, one person very friendly and helpful, another being a bit cold and curt. It retains some nice old character but has lost some as well. The conservatory-like addition in the back, though nice, does somewhat clash with the old parts and our room was comfortable but a bit bland. Apparently, it is linked to the local and very colourful and controversial Mitford family, who lived in the area. The parents and some of the several sisters were ardent fascists and Nazi sympathisers in WWII, others had different views. Apparently, one owned the place. This is very nice and I would both stay and eat here again based on our experience, but it was not as good as other places we experienced. If it had been just a ltitle better on the points mentioned, I'd probably give it a 5, but as it was, it's closer to a 4.
