The pub has two rooms: the main bar area has a pool table and a Sport TV screen, which attracts something of a local male crowd (in fact, all male between 30 and 50-something on our visit). Dogs are also allowed in this bar - so says a notice on the door! Behind is a larger room with its own bar counter, more laid out for dining and families. There's also an outdoor area for use in summer and plenty of parking. We didn't eat here but were told that food is good - the pub is under new management (as of early 2009). The landlord was very chatty and friendly. Real ales consisted of Wadworths 6X and Reverend James - a nice change in this part of the world.

A disappointing visit…read more Went for a birthday lunch with my husband & 2 children. Having not been for a very long time I expected the restaurant area to have been updated.but its still the same. It needs updating! Old carpettatty walls etc. The childrens menu was very limited and had the usual fish fingers & chips etc. Would have been nice to have had some healthier choices on there.not even pasta was offered. My Moussaka came out steaming hot (just out of the microwave I expect) and had much too much cheese on top.I had to scoop it all off to actually get down to the meat..This was easier said than done as was all stringy due to it being so hot! It wasn't very nice My husband had Ham, egg & Chips.he said it was OK. I had asked for a small portion of tuna pasta (it was on the Specials Board) for my son.but this was not possible so ended up having to pay almost £9 for a dish that my 4 yr old ate about a 1/3 of!!! However our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Its a shame as I thought it would have been much nicer than it was. We won't be going back.

It's a gorgeous little pub in a gorgeous little town in Oxfordshire and we'd had it recommended to us by friends but noticed online it had also won lots of awards for its amazing grub. Well, we were sold! On the first evening they were packed due to lots of large Christmas parties in the dining room out the back so we perched on a little table in the warm and cosy pub area by the bar. I had the scallops and black pudding starter with apple compote which was beyond words delicious (but I will try anyway) - the scallops were melt-in-your-mouth and the black pudding cooked to perfection (which is a feat in itself as it's so easily overcooked leaving it dry!) For the main I had steak with blue cheese and garlic butter (there goes the diet!), a lovely salad and chips which I could have done without - I think maybe potatoes would have been better. My fella had steak and Hooky pie with peas and chips which was also pretty damn good. On our second visit I had a smoked salmon and anchovy starter which was so fresh, and pork belly main with mashed potatoes and veg. The fella had wood pigeon and guinea fowl - again all the food was superb! The service is very friendly and efficient, the prices extremely reasonable for the fantastic meals they're serving (ooh, did I mention the complimentary warm bread rolls and butter?) and a lovely setting which perfectly complemented our country weekend away! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

It is in a rural setting on the river ye an easy walk along the footpaths which are along the river, from the heart of the town and the university. There is a large seating area outside on the grass down to the river, partly shaded, plus a paved patio right at the back of the building, with lots of nice seating. The food is good, service was good. We had nice pea soup and other starters. It's a Butcombe Brewery pub and had several cask ales, including Butcombe Bitter, which was well kept. The place is also very famous for fans of the Morse shows, including Lewis and Endeavour, for it features repeatedly in the shows where Morse and Lewis, and later Lewis and Hathaway go several times. Most famous of these is the important scene in the Morse episode The Remorseful Day where Morse recites the poem by A.E. Housman sitting on the patio in back of the pub overlooking the grass and river. For fans of the shows, it is worth visiting for that reason alone.

It has the external and internal ambiance of an old times, British pub. The building is amazing looking and the inside is awash with wood and warm lighting. There is an upstairs as well, where you can sit by the window ina cozy chair and enjoy a pint while you watch the crowds walk by. But... The service was unwelcoming when we entered. We were greeted and acknowledged immediately at all pubs we went to, as we walked in. When we walked in here, the bartender looked at me and I had a sense that she was annoyed and I almost thought we had walked in while they were closed. There was only 3 other patron in the building. I had to walk all the way to the bar and then stood there for a couple minutes before she acknowledged me. My wife and I both commented about the strong odor of fish, when we walked in, and not cooked fish. Smelt like we were in a fish market. Because of this, we headed to the second floor. I ordered a beer and my wife a cider, both were good. We wanted something shareable to eat because we had been walking around all day and had dinner reservations in 3 hours. The menu raved about their 14 inch deep pan pizzas, so we ordered one. The only thing deep about it was, in fact, the pan. The pizza was extreme thin and very flimsy. They do have shuffle board there, but it's £10 for 55 minutes. Since there was nobody there, we didn't have to pay to play. If all you wanted was a pint and to see a nice looking pub, you could grab one here but it isn't a place to sit down and stay a while.
